Do You Refer To Yourself As You Dogs "mum Or Dad"?
Vehs replied to shells's topic in General Dog Discussion
hah - I often say parents instead of owners when referring to clients in grooming "Joey's mum is picking him up at 3" I remember one owner saying "we will come and get Joey after his brother is finished with soccer practice"... their 9 year old (human) son! LOL Bf referred to himself as MY dogs 'daddy' the other day I'm not my dog's 'mummy' I'm his 'vournie' (my name) My dog knows who 'dad' and 'mum' are - my parents! So if you say 'go find mum' he'll go and get her -

I'm using the repella on my dog - forgot to put it on Monday (as it was cold overcast day) and felt SOOOO guilty later that night because his ears had had a good going over When I had a guest dog here I was putting repella on his ears as well, but he never got bitten - the vet told me my dog was allergic to the fly spit and thats why he got all bleedy and red and then that attracted more flies. That might be the reason why one is being bitten more than the other.

awww!! I wish I had a dog with 'big dog syndrome' - we've got one with the well known 'little dog syndrome'

I'll let D have access to ONE bowl of water after his walk, because of his bloat I don't want him to keep guzzling - which he is only was want to do a few times a year. After 20min I'll refill the bowl. He has access all night as he signals when he wants to go out, but he's only done that when he had some #2 problem, he can hold on until about 6:30 - which is as long as I can hold on as well!
-
While ppl love commenting on the D, and saying 'oh look it's Rex' to which I inevitably respond 'he's better looking than Rex', and often try and call him over for pets (when we are in an offlead area) I love that he is very aloof I've found there are two types of ppl - those that had GSDs as a child and love them, and those that got bitten by one :smurf:

thanks guys, I am catching up with her on the weekend so will let her know your thoughts

funnily enough Nek he has spent about a week with her parents older dogs (BC and some cavs) and probably because they don't play anymore he doesn't get the chance to be a bully

My friend has a 10month old cavvy and recently added a mixed breed from the pound to her family - he's probably about a year old and you can tell he's got staffy in him but god knows what else, they are about the same size, but the mixed breed is a little stockier. He is a smart little chappy and when I've visited he's always really keen to please and will follow the commands that he knows. She's probably had him for 1month-1.5months. I haven't witnessed this behavior directly, and went round to see it tonight, but as you'd expect he didn't do it, anyhoo -- he will knock over the cav by pinning her by her neck and then her throat and when she yelps/whines he doesn't let go. It seems to be all in play and there is no aggression - what is the best way for my friend to deal with this? I suggested taking him outside until he calmed down, but the dogs are usually outside by themselves when he does this. When she separates them the cav dashes off but will more often than not come back to play For the most part they seem very good together, they play together by wrestling, chasing each other for toys, tugging toys. She is considering getting rid of him because of this behaviour Any suggestions? The other issue is she got a kitten a few weeks ago and both dogs like to bail it up, but typical cat it also taunts them! The cat has high up safe places it can go, but always seems to find itself in a corner with the dogs sniffing around it - again both dogs are just curious and playful and there is no aggression. Would teach/enforcing the 'leave it' command be best?

How Do You Clip The Nails Of A 70kg Dog?
Vehs replied to Tigey's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
get them used to it when they are little I'm not of much help - try to do it after they have gone for a walk when they are tired. Some ppl suggest smothering peanut butter on a fridge/cupboard and while they stand licking it off you try and do their nails. Others have said to just slowly get them used to foot touching by praising and treating and building up over weeks/months to actually clipping their nails. In grooming we don't have that time so I get someone else to hold the dog and just snip away - you could try going to a groomers/vet if they play up for their owners -
Happy Birthday! 5 pfft he's still a spring chicken!

If I could be bothered starting a thread it would be 'If a dog was named after you, what breed would they be/characteristics would they have: based on name alone' ie if my name was Shazza/Sharon, the dog would have to be a red heeler! -
Feeding Two Dogs Bones In A Shared Yard
Vehs replied to Sam the man's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was looking after a friends dog for a month and my boy gets bones in the mornings as I head off to work - to stop any issues I gave them both a couple drumsticks as they could finish those off before I even got to the car ;) I then would give them tougher bones like lamb flaps and soup bones on the weekend while I was home. I gave them their bowl dinners in different corners of the kitchen while I did the dishes - after each meal they'd check out what the other had eaten but neither tried to take the others food while they were eating I also tried to clear anyway any old bones in the garden, but the guest dog still found some. -
I taught my dog how to do this, but it's with his toys and his toy basket. I backchained it and used a clicker so that I only clicked when the toy landed in the basket - he's got the idea and now if he rushes and misses the basket or the toy knocks the rim and falls out he quickly picks it back up and puts it in. He may be dropping it because he is keen to get the reward in his mouth. don't not feed him, just train the few minutes before dinner or early in the morning

our weekends away are usually for an event, ie concert, and we do it as cheap as we can so that rules out taking dogs with us or we stay with friends who have cats our yearly holidays have been in a timeshare so no pets allowed there either and our OS trip you obviously can't bring dogs on! I'd love to take the dogs to the beach, but bf is really worried about ticks

Relationship Between Dog Size, Yard Size And Exercise?
Vehs replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have a massive yard and a tiny house - D just sleeps all day. All his toys are concentrated in one area so I know during the day he doesn't move much! He'll do some zoomies in the yard occasionally, but he gets walked for an hour each day (half off lead) and I think that tires him out enough -
aww happy birthday!
-
I think as long as he's got his bed and familiar toys and most importantly you for the first few days he'll be fine. D was fine moving house and I think it's because he knew where is bed was and we kept to the usual routine of things. I have another dog that is staying with me for a month and I think he settled in well when he knew where his bed was and once he figured out meals are at about the same time each day

Anyone Else Get Emotional As Your Dog Gets Older?

haha PF - I think in this house it's more like 'D=no rules' I love it when he behaves like a complete goob and puppy - almost delighted when he destroys his toys! -
