  1. Gee, that sounds pretty reasonable newnewf. My Chi girl's desex was about $250 from memory. Perhaps there is a "search fee" for such littlies! Must be damn fiddly Unfortunately she developed a small hernia AFTER the surgery, where the mid-line incision was done Different vets all think it's just a "fatty" hernia, but doesn't seem quite right to me. Hunta got a lump afterwards as she was not as quiet as she needed to be. Could that be what it is? They vet took a sample adn it was just fluid. Within a week it had gone down. Not sure why she got it - she was kept very quiet and didn't lick her wound or pull her stiches :D She was desexed 18 months ago and it hasn't "gone away" unfortunately. I keep an eye on it and have had 2 vet opinions saying not to worry...
  2. Just yesterday I was telling a friend of mine about all the info and opinions on here re annual vacs. She took one of her Chis for her shot yesterday and was back at the vets within an hour, as the dog's face blew up like a balloon. The vet then told her that this dog will need prophylactic antihistamines next year in conjunction with the vac injection, to prevent an even worse reaction. Makes you wonder....
  3. In winter I bathe Bonnie in quite warm water, otherwise she would freeze! I agree above re rinsing++ being important.
  4. Thanks guys! She did seem lovely on the phone - just wanted to check on here!! She sounds just what Bonnie and I need... I'm in the Eastern Suburbs - she does house calls as mentioned and her next August small dog class is in Mount Barker. Bit of a hike, but worth it I'm sure! Cheers, Helen
  5. A very sad thing to have to contemplate Big-Dog-Lover...I dread this happening with my girl (she's only 2, so hopefully it is eons away). Well said persephone! At least we have the humane option for our beloved pets. I've seen a close family member pass away from cancer and the bolded description above was exactly how her last month was - absolute hell. I think when our pets are starting to suffer, life is no longer worth living, and you are sure the situation won't improve, that is a good time to consider the options...
  6. Good add-on Bailey9 re food bowls...an important tip! I *might* be getting a second dog at some point and won't have any probs giving Bonnie 75% of the attention, as I'm besotted with her!! Lock me up for being a "mad dog woman" now...
  7. Something I read ages ago, which I've already repeated on DOL somewhere, but here it is again! When you first get the puppy, give your existing dog 75% of your attention. Your "old" dog is used to all your attention, while the puppy is used to sharing with their siblings, so the puppy isn't put out by this. Of course, most people do the opposite, as the puppy is so cute and new! Poor "old" dog is in the background feeling left out... The rational is it prevents your existing dog from getting jealous and reassures them that they aren't being replaced by the newbie...
  8. Thanks Ness! She also does in-home consults apparently, I might have one of those with Bonnie before doing the group class...
  9. Has anyone used this organisation? They use the "Delta" training methods... I have a fairly timid Chi, of the sweet/avoidant variety. She is great once she gets to know new people/dogs, but is shy in the meantime. So naturally I'm after a gentle, low pressure group environment. Any recommendations re this group or any others in Adelaide? Many thanks!
  10. I reckon Natures Gift does some excellent tinned food (I have a few on-hand for emergencies), but looking at the ingredients list of their treat range isn't very inspiring, which is disappointing. They are not something I'd personally give Bonnie...but she is deprived of smackos too - except when she visits my Dad - he's a bit naughty with dogs and the overfeeding of treats! Sounds like a plainer diet with antibiotics might be safest?
  11. That is very sad, all the best NicoleL...
  12. Aw, cuddles on the couch!! They look great together....
  13. Very good point! Backs are not something to mess around with...
  14. Sounds awful!! I'm guessing he is/was very active?? Perhaps he's popped a disk or damaged his back by twisting/landing funny or something? The faeces in bed is alarming - how are his back legs working? Though it sounds like he is still active, as you say above. I've popped a disk in my back myself (car accident) and needed surgery. My legs weren't working too good at that point tho Hope it goes okay on Monday and you find out what's going on....
  15. It's more than sometimes!! Do you know how much they drink?!? Yes, I used to have horses. Any animal that gets their water in an old bathtub drinks heaps!!
  16. My Chi girl was diagnosed with LP about 9 months ago. They got bad quite quickly (clicking in/out and she got slower on walks and a bit limpy). As she was only 18 months old, I went ahead with my vet's suggestion and had both operated on. The surgeon was brilliant (and cute/lovely ) - he was a specialist in orthopedic surgery for dogs. She had the procedure where the little "knob" of bone that the patella ligament attaches to was moved to a more correct central position. It cost $1200 for her two legs, but has so been worth it!! She is fine now and can play and go for long walks no worries. Having caught it early too was good, as each time their patella clicks out of place it apparently causes wear and tear, then arthritis occurs. Fix the problem early and this doesn't happen so much. I had to keep her quiet for 6 weeks afterwards, so took that time off work. Not very convenient, but again it was worth it. Edited to add: Yes, I have to watch Bonnie's weight too - I've been warned by both that surgeon and my vet that weight is a very important factor with LP. Too bad Bonnie is a gutsy/prone to fat little Chi!!
  17. I agree with other posters re taking the food away after 1/4 hour. Keep em keen! My initial response re 24 hours was more about how long the bickies might stay fresh out of their original packaging, to reoffer them at subsequent meals.
  18. Don't they just!?! A good thing too, with the torrents they produce sometimes....
  19. I suppose 24 hours? It would have to lose some "freshness" and appeal after a while I'm guessing.... I don't tend to have the problem of how long to leave any food out!! It all gets hoovered up!
  20. I really wish Australian dog food companies would get their act together and match some of the high-end USA products!! I use Eagle Pack Holistic, but would MUCH rather use something Aust made. From what I can tell Advance seems the best Aust-made food but that contains a number of ingredients I'm not too sure about!!
  21. Is there any treat he particularly likes that you could give him when he has to be outside, eg meaty bone or similar as a distraction? Sounds like it's pretty ingrained behaviour, perhaps professional help might be best?
  22. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Bicycle-Trailer-Dog...1QQcmdZViewItem Thanks for that link NoodleNut!!
  23. OMG Jules and Noodlenut, you guys are seriously decked out for camping adventures. Jules, your setup sounds like a mobile hotel!! Noodlenut, I bet Noodle loves that bike arrangement - where did you get it from?? I've though of getting similar for Bonnie...
  24. I reckon camping with dogs sounds like lots of fun!! I would love to do it, but don't really have anyone to go with...friends either not into camping or married with kids etc! It's all very selfish of them really... :D
