  6. Im the biggest supporter of clomicalm. Ive had My standard poodle on it since she was around 6 months old. Ive combined the meds with training and at 14 months am really seeing improvement. Age, training and medication is great for her. You can tell if she has missed a dose. Its been her saving grace. Its not going to work for all dogs and can tske time to start effecting them. Best thing I can suggest is get back into behavioural modification training again while she is medicated. The two things together should have a better effect. The meds just seem to stop 10thousand thoughts in their heads and lets them be able to settle. Thats my experience. eta: She has never seemed zonked out on the meds.
  7. I can get it in for you Abbey at my salon... I dont usually sell it but I can get it from a wholesaler at Cavan. pm if ya want a hand.

  9. They do advertise as maltese terriers in the TAFE SA short course hand book... There shuldnt be short courses... learning to groom is not a short course deal. You could not learnt to clip all those breeds in 10 days and refer to it as advanced. Advaced implies skills learnt and be damned if they can teach you to lip properly and well all those breeds in 10 days... It takes months. Im all for PROPER training nd acredited courses. There needs to be standardisation in the industry to stop inexperienced people being able to get their hands on and cause potentially dangerous situations but courses like these arent it. These only promote inexperienced and backyard groomers without an ounce of experience thinking that they can now do out and clip anything. There needs to be better courses, longer, more comprehensive and more hands on.
  10. I can still get it here is Adelaide... its about... $120-135 for it for maxi dog retail.
  11. Mine does the same thing in the yard with soccer ball with rope on it I got from petstock last year. If hes outside and its insight hes doing the exact same thing. Even tunneling it like that and barking! its so cute!
  12. its the opposite directrection from you but a client just recently boarded their wei pup there and loved it.. its called Petherton Park kennels its on spencer street in macdonaold park Dont know about Dr Dog but ifyou've inspected it and your gut says its good then go for it.
  13. I strongly beleive that there should be acceditation for groomers to weed out the bad ones but the SA TAFE course IS NOT it! It is superbly inferior to other states and teaches people nothing of the real world of grooming. Ihave Neve been asked what my accreditations are.I have a Cert II in animal care but no formalgrooming training and I will tell people mybackground but ive never been asked. And its not like my salon is a strugling hack groomers either we are booker up at least a week in advance and I have 4 people working everyday. We are good and none of us have formal traing just on the job but believe me is a proper training course come to SA we will all attnd it@
  14. The point I was making about a teacher training is that it is like most professions and that is the formal training is only the start of the process in becoming a competent professional. All professions require years of experience to become an expert. I have dealt with a number of groomers who are working in the industry, and got their start in TAFE. Swinburne Uni in Victoria offered a course for existing groomers to advance thier skills and this course was conducted in a salon. The feedback from the students was excellent. TAFE courses are the same as groomers, there are some bad ones out there but the whole industry should not be tarnished. TAFE courses need to be encouraged as it is the only way to formally train people for the industry. For the industry to grow in status, training and qualifications need to be done in a formal and accredited way, not in an adhoc fashion by learning from a groomer with no quality control. But we're not talking Swinburne uni... We are talking about the Adelaide TAFE grooming course which is not adequate by any standard. I started my grooming career doing a a cert II at the same TAFE and ended up finding a wonderful place to do work placement and I was kept on a trained. The Adelaide grooming courses arent good enough even for the basics as you were comparing.
  15. But there has been a higher number of badly trained and inexperienced "groomers" with mobile salons. Generally speaking in a salon environment those ones are getting trained and if the dont make the grade they are replaced with someone who has a flair and can be a good groomer. We have worked together you and me and I have a greater respect for mobiles purely because you are trying to do the right thing. But not everyone is and most think they are gonna eaarn a quick buck! Most of the mobiles I know are 'cowboys' They have no training no experience handling dogs and they got into mobile as a franchise to earn better cash. A lot of them have no idea how to wash and rinse a dog properly and almost never know how to dry and brush. One place offers a wash service and it casot more to dry and a small fortune to brush. And then they dont brush properly. The mobiles like yourself who are professional groomers and trainers are the very rare ones! But I appreciate the hard work you do and the fact you try and give mobile a better name but there are still the majority of mobiles that are incompetant due to a lack of training. I dont knwo too many salons that would lend their name and let an inexperinced groomer touch a dog unsupervised without adequate training. Unfortunately thats what happens with mobiles especially franchises. And with the washing in a hydrobath... Have you never had a terrorfied little puppy that would get blown away by the forse of the hydrobath? or a dog scared of the noise? I know I have at the salon and I thank the powers that be that I have warm runniing water on tap as well as a hydrobath or these dogs would flip their lids. As it is they get a nice relaxing bath with a hose and get trained to accept the hydrobath and they are all happy. I also have many clients who request the hose instead of the hydrobath for their pups and its just their preference. I can safely say that kids yelling and squealing at the dog while i was trying to groom it would be my worst nightmare. Some of the puppies I get are bad enough without their whole family talking around them and making excitable noises when im trying to calm their puppy down. And kids arent that good as to stand their quietly like little angels and not say or touch. I am a dog groomer not a child minder. In saying that my salon is set up so people can see into my clipping room while im going and watch their dog from a distance which is great for the dog cause they dont get over excited and great for my because they dont strt jumping around and great for the parent cause they can see. I wouldnt like them in my personal space learing over my should and i dont know too many people who would.
  16. I would strongly discourage you from the grooming course at TAFE. I had a member of my staff who was doing it and she did it casue she paid for it but she learnt more practicle skills in 1 month with me that the whole time at tafe. Its a waste of money. They dont have correct facilities or equipment out there. Neither do they have adequate numbers of dogs to groom with. They dont have any idea about the real grooming world. You cannot learn a shnauzer clip by doing one dog. The only way to get into this industry is to get a job in a saoln for at least a year or two to get experience and knowledge behind yourself as well as find out if this is really for you. Its hard work, not all playing with cute dogs. I came into this industry a few years ago with no physical problems i know have a gammy back and get RSi in both wrists. Its hard work. Most mobile groomers will luck out before their 2nd year. I wish you luck!
  17. The problem here my fellow groomers is everyone IS taught differently... There is no school natioanlly like for vets and nurses that teach this is the way to do it. There is no standardising out there. Anyone can open up and groom. I fell confortable grooming pups because as it has bee said breeders clip at groom their show dogs from a very young age so why shoud pets be any different. We will all find a happy medium...
  18. the last dog that was 12 months old before a clip bit my hand open because it had never been to a salon before. Some had told them not to get its clipped before that age so theynever took it anywhere till it was 12 months so it was terrorfied. We recomend 6 months because at that age there is more adult coat and looks better. we have over a douzen i can think of that had their first clip at 14 weeks and their coats are beautiful. In summer i get alot more people with puppies younger getting them clipped because they dont cope with heat and stripping isnt sufficent. All owners are happy after never had a complaint. On the poodle thing I had a mini pup that the owner had for 6 months and never got it trimmed! Black dog beautiful coat but it look like a little swamp thing. took 3 and a half hours to grrom cause it had not had its face or anything done before this and she wanted traditional face, feet and tail and a puppy trim. the dog was nearly 8 months old and hadnt been clippered since it left the breeders. My was of looking at puppies is that I can look after them well so Im not going to turn them away to another salon that could spoil them with a bad experience or shave the pup off. I use clip on combs and all sorts to keep a little length but ultimately I do it cause if i dont someone else will and will butcher it up!
  19. naw poor baby...sound like you both had a raugh night. hope all is better today.
  20. couldnt have said ti better Cavandra. Dont let the little snots win!!! Angie I had one today... 6 months... groomed once before and was a screamer!!!!!! I started worrying someone on the street would think i was killing it. Touch leg with clippers scream and bite touch front feet same thing... I just held him till he stopped screaming and kept going by the end he was quiet and relaxed... cant aiw to see if he pulls this again next time LOL!
  21. my poodlehad an innie and i have it sergically fixed which worked a charm but i had her speyed at the same time so im not much use. lol.
  22. Sounds like my boy the first night home on monday night... Sounds like he is still suffering some effects from the anaesthetic can take 24 to 48hrs to recover properly... wouldnt worry yet if hes not looking a bit better by tomorrow night or goes off his tucker call the vet. otherwise just let him work thriugh it.
  23. Well from someone going through this now... I say CHOP EM!!! My goldie is going in tomorrow morning for his knakkers off!!! heis now 15months of age... has not conformed well in the hip for show and therefore I and his breeder have decided not to show and breed him. Along with this about 3 months ago his personality changed a bit too. He has alwasy been the perfect puppy and young male. squatted to wee.. never marked never got grumpy at other entire males and then suddenlythe leg was cocking... he was marking over his sister and started letting me know when a bitch was coming in or going out of season that came to my salon. The final straw was the showing of dominance to other entire males and that "manly" smell they can get. So Ive booked him in for the chop 8.30 tomorrow morning. And I cant wait. I bought him with the mind to show and breed but that hasnt happened so Im getting them off! Will let people know how he goes but I tell you Im not going to miss the whining and whinging are bitches in season I tell you. Or the male deafness that caused me to stop taking him to puppy parks offlead cause he wouldnt listen to me once he got his nose on the ground. Wont miss it a bit.. I saw off with their balls! they'll never suspect a thing! and if my husbands notcarefull he'll be next :D :D :p :p ps. im paying around $350 so I think you are getting a really good deal. Just make sure they will give him plenty of fluids and after op care.
  24. ok... So ive read Dr Jean Dodds article from Cavandra's website... maybe I will go the the goldies show and listen to her becaue I have a few questions that to me dont add up. Just saying they have a full immune respose after their 12 months vac c doesnt make it so and to suggest a titer test to me = more money for the vets anyway. And also that her claim that a dog has its full immune system and thats as good as it gets then why titer test? That suggests that booster are need because they dont have a permeneant immune imprint and strength. That it does fade. Maybe some will fade fasterthen others (12month vaccs) maybe some later (3year) but this person has contradicted themselves a bit. I would love to ask them a couple of questions when they come to Adelaide. Im all for new treatments and ones better for our pets but im extremely cautious of holistic vets. (Have had 3 different occations where a holistic has been extremely detrimental to one of my clients. Gave a dog with serious skin sensitivity and allergy ie washed with malaseb only. Human shampoo saying if its good enough for people its good enough for pets that will fix his skin. he lost 40% of his hair on his body within a week and his skin took nearly 3 months to recover from all the raw bleeding cracks from the shampoo.) Like regular vets they have their companies that fund them and put their interests out so we as everday people have to make our own descisions and do our research which I will be now to get both sides. Their are arguments from both sides as well as personal experiences. I will not make conclusions about the benefit of either vaccination table until I feel i have adequate information to back up either side. Thankyou for the link on your website Cavandra..I will be reading more oh and as a side note... Your cavvies are simply gorgeous!
  25. The problem is that your dog can have no reaction for years then suddenly have one, and many dogs have no reaction at the time but build up in their system over years to react later in life in the form of arthritis, cancer etc........If we humans had a Hepatitis injection every year I think it would make us very sick eventually, and that is what we are doing to our pets "killing them with kindness" I see you are in SA, you are lucky indeed as Dr Jean Dodds is the guest speaker at the Golden Retriever National in May, to get a good knowledge of what Vaccines do to our dogs this is a seminar not to be missed I can understand finding what is causing the reactionc but the suggestion here to me is not to vaccinate? Is that correct? I find the idea of not vaccinating terrorfying. I would chance a reaction rather than chance parvo or anyother illness like that. For me the remote possibility of an allergic reaction rather then the near certainty or illness if i dont is a small worry for 24hrs compared to a lifetime of worry or are they gonna cath something. Only one out of I dont know how many hundreds of clients I have, have had bad reactions. Thats the same as this cancer vaccine for younger women. Some reacted babdly but most were fine. Small price to be vaccinated against cancer I say. But thats my way of looking at things.
