  1. Ditto. Just highlighting this one. Ditto. I have a dog reactive dog (usually to dogs of a similar size and build to her, which means staffords, kelpies, amstaffs and mixes of them are particularly likely to set her off). If I see an off leash dog I'm not happy because if it comes up to say hello to Ella, she will often react, and then the dog could too if it takes her "F*** Off" snap as an attack, then the whole thing escalates and there's a fight. Why would I NOT be shitty and a bit anxious to see an off leash dog when that could so easily be the result? That might be because there is nothing to worry about with your smaller one as it is tied up. Regarding when they are on leash, probably a size issue, but also, some dog reactive dogs tend to react more to certain breeds because of their innate confidence, so anyone with a dog reactive or DA dog will take one look at a stafford or amstaff and keep their dog well away (unless they're one of the morons we all complain about here regularly who let their DA dog run amok). If I'm walking Ella and there is an aggressive little dog on leash trying to have a go at her, she'll ignore it but if a stafford so much as looks sideways at her she's not happy.
  2. Kelpie x extreme cuteness. I know, no earthly help. If she was my foster she'd be at serious risk of FF, she reminds me of my Ella. I'd say no to basenji, even though it looks like it on the surface, they're not common so a basenji cross would be unlikely. Plus, basenji tails are VERY tightly curled (hard to unfurl by hand - I've tried ) I suspect a basenji cross would have a tighter curl. If she's only a pup, she'll grow into those radar ears a bit. ETA: Oh also, Basenjis don't bark.
  3. I just read the 'sad news' and thought "Oh no!" Just came in to say how sorry I am that he didn't make it. Big hugs to you and his owner Indigirl. R.I.P. beautiful Reg, run free old man.
  4. It's only taken about 6 months since I first saw this thread and realised I had hundreds of the dogs but not with me in them, but we finally took some today. My two absolute faves of Kuga and I...
  5. Ditto, well done Indigirl. Still thinking of you all and sending good wishes for a full recovery Reg's way.

  8. And nobody tried to defend her... Wonder if she's learned anything from the overwhelmingly disapproving responses. Wonder how many others like her learned anything from reading the article, and then the responses. Lots of people out there have such a love for their dog they think the only way to cope when it's short life inevitably ends is to have a baby from it. I was once one of them but I saw the light before it happened. My housemate also thought the same until I told a few horror stories. We need to get the message out there.
  9. for Reg, hope he pulls through. for you indigirl, what a stressful and emotionally draining day you've had.
  10. I noticed Rocco when I first joined DOL (he kind of stood out a bit) and have seen lots of pics (I remember some of him on the beach) but somehow missed all the arty pics of him and Ralph (had dial up when I joined so I never got into the habit of checking the photo forum) so have just been looking at your pics on Flickr, Rocco1. It's clear that you two had an amazing bond and my heart is just breaking for you. RIP big guy...taken too soon.
  11. Ditto! Rav, dog hair in the fish tank is not exactly unusual in this house. When I host dinner parties, as I serve up dinner I always say "All pet hair is complimentary." I have neat freak tendencies but you just have to compromise when you love having animals around so much. Not sure I could handle long haired dogs though, but I have two long haired cats so go figure.
  12. That makes me SO mad! Ella didn't meet expectations, wasn't what they said she was, didn't grow as big as expected and had energy levels about 5 times higher than expected. I just adapted. What is wrong with people that they can't adjust a little? Everything goes into the too hard basket at the first challenge. It really pisses me off. There is no such thing as an easy dog, they ALL need toilet training, they aren't born toilet trained and knowing all the house rules. It's not because of the type of dog that they end up in the pound, it's because of the lazy people who shouldn't have got a dog in the first place , although it follows that the more energetic/challenging the dog, the more likely it is to be dumped. Sorry, ending rant now... All those who breed more unusual/rare breeds are so lucky, because most of the people who ask after their pups will have done their research.
  13. These words just break my heart. Ditto. To grieve for a dog means you are an animal lover. No animal lover could massacre cowering dogs. I don't think he was grieving, I think he was angry and completely off his trolley. The thing is, he had to know that the 3 week old puppies were not involved in the killing of his fox terrier, and yet he targeted them along with all the others. He just wanted to kill them ALL, regardless of which dogs were involved, if it even was any of them. I agree, what a maniac, and I too hope he rots. R.I.P. poor dogs and hope the survivors aren't traumatised for life.
  14. Funny, 'cos I pictured Gibbs smacking Tony as I wrote it. As ship's mascot, does he stay on the ship? I'd think the poor lad would be better off on terra firma.
  15. Only if you really LOVE applying lots of wetting agent. The wax on gum leaves is a major contributor to water repellent soil. It's ok when mixed with a lot of other nice rich humous, but if someone's offering free large bags of gum leaves as mulch, don't go there. You're welcome. Hmmm, I didn't know the Silk Tree was weedy, and I'm usually the fanatical anti environmental weed lobbyist (not that you would have noticed ) The other benefit of the Virgilia is that being short lived, they are also fast growing!
  16. Not Dutch, but taking into consideration the early onset Alzheimers, could it have been a saluki or a borzoi?
  17. I can't confirm with any authority but I was also horrified to read that the dog was running around with the dead snake as I thought the same thing.
  18. Curlygirl, I'm glad you posted that adult kangaroos can't be treated for a broken leg, because looking at that photo of a seemingly relaxed kangaroo, it seems hard to accept that anybody had to kill it. I feel sorry for the cop for being the one who had to do it, and for the flak he received from doing his job, but I must admit I was wondering why a team of RSPCA rangers were unavailable to dart it and take it away for rehabilitation. It's not thrashing wildly and doesn't look stressed by its injury. I suppose darting it could shock it into action that would be painful for the roo and could cause a hazard though, and if it can't be treated, then this was the only alternative, given that the RSPCA were 'unavailable'. Why are they calling it a LARGE kangaroo btw? Looks small-medium to me.
  19. Then I'm pathetic too. Serious lump in the throat material. Poor baby must have been terrified. Hope he makes it and ends up with a loving home, be it his original owners or a new one. OT - The journo needs a smack on the back of the head NCIS style though...drifted UP river and out to sea?
  20. Actually, Tiggy's tree is a Tipuana tipu (or Pride of Bolivia). Sorry Horus You missed the bit where Tiggy said it has yellow flowers, and the seed pods are different too. Unfortunately this isn't an ideal tree either, as it both suckers and sets seed easily and is known to be invasive, so is on the alert list for environmental weeds. Erny, Acacia is botanese for wattle. If you want a smallish tree with feathery foliage, have a look at Albizia julibrissin (Persian Silk Tree). It grows 5 - 12m high, is deciduous so will let light in in winter, has pretty fluffy pale pink flowers. Its leaves also close up at night, and in the rain, so on an overcast rain drenched day it will let more light in too. Another nice small tree with feathery foliage is Virgilia capensis (Cape Virgilia). It grows 5 - 7m high, is semi deciduous in colder climates and has mauve flowers. It's short lived though, usually only about 15 years. Amypie, bring a leaf sample along to the next DOL meet and I'll confirm the diagnosis and treatment. It would seem that Erny is right though. ETA: Oh, it would help to know why the sooty mould is there. Look for hard waxy white bumps (White Wax Scale) or hard brownish bumps (Brown Scale) on the soft green stems, or little cottonwool like things (Cottony Cushion Scale or Mealybug), or clusters of little insects on new growth and flower buds (Aphids). Are there ants running up and down the tree? They 'farm' aphids for the honeydew. For any bits of the tree you can't reach to wash the leaves with warm soapy water, a strong blast from the hose is better than nothing.
  21. Like Persephone and Kissindra said, it's all about what's best for the dog. Bearing in mind that legally, the dog is only regarded as property, so if things get silly and you have to go to magistrates court, the dog's best interests will not be considered, only whose name is on the receipt for the dog. It will also be expensive to have to resort to that. In order to avoid that silliness, you guys need to sit down and have an amicable discussion. I like Kissindra's idea. Definitely don't stay in an unhappy relationship for the dog! Especially as you've now laid your cards on the table and he knows how you feel. Don't know if it's any help, but a friend of mine was in a similar situation recently, I started a thread here on DOL and there are some good responses... http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...180626&st=0
  22. Well I'd given zero thought to resident vet cats being an issue for some as my dogs live with two cats and don't care about the vet cats. The other day when I was in there though I was appalled to find one of the vet cats was obese! I said to the vet nurse on duty that it wasn't exactly good advertising and she agreed but said they couldn't help it because this cat ate everybody else's food. How hilarious! And handy! I love the fact that you take advantage of it! ...or a dog recovering from anaesthetic...I once had to lie down in one of the consult rooms spooning Kuges for over an hour on one of those cold and shiny floors trying to keep him warm until he could get his feet under him without them sliding straight back out. He'd tried so many times and then just given up and lay as he fell, so I asked for a blanket to put under him as he was shivering and the only thing they had was a towel so I pulled that under him as best I could and then kept him warm with my body. He was about 40 kilos at the time so there was no way I could just lift him to his feet without going A over T myself. Then when he finally got to his feet with some help from me and the towel, we did some crazy act as we skidded and slipped across the reception on our way out with me like some loony personal trainer yelling chirpily "Come on, you can do it! Attaboy! That's the way! Keep going!" I HATE those floors.
