  1. Even after 20 years of successful showing and breeding, Jane will still not know all there is to learn. Novice breeders realise they know nothing. After about 3 or 4 years they think they know everything. If they stick with breeding, a few years later they will start to realise how much they still have to learn. If you are a truly dedicated breeder you never stop learning. I consider anyone with less than 20 years experience a relative newcomer to the dog world. You need to have observed several generations for their full lifespan to really know a breed. At the first National Border Collie show in 2006 we had a photo taken of all the exhibitors with 20+ years in the breed. There were about 50 breeders in that photo, so newcomers have a long way to go to gain that sort of knowledge and experience. The best person to decide if your dog is worthy of breeding is your mentor. A mentor should have at least 15-20 years in the breed and have successfully produced numerous titled dogs in whatever field you wish to pursue ie. showing, trialling, herding, retrieving, etc. It is preferable if the your mentor has produced dogs titled in conformation as well as other activities appropriate to the breed. IMO this a very pompous statement, and is the reason a lot of newbies give up. ;)
  2. Just remembered what I did this last litter which was born on the 2nd of Feb. I put some gel packs under the vet bed at one end. The pups motored on and off that area. This was the first time I had used vet bed and pups can really motor around on it.
  3. I feel that your daughter needs thearapy as this behaviour may transfer to something else. I suggest check out a child pyschologist. Westmead Hospital I am sure they would have one. In fact I just Googled Child Pyschologist New South Wales and heaps came up.
  4. alpha bet I tend to agree with you. There are some breeders/showie out there who only send their 2nd rate stock of to other people. Personally I would rather see my good quality in the ring and the rest pet homed.
  5. Well done CW. I did my bit today. The clother dryer fixit man came and of course I heard the dogs bark so I knew he was at the door. Got him in without any escapes. He said he was used to dogs. Asked later if he hada dog and said no but was going to get one when he moved to Geelong. Said he was thinking of getting a cav. Gave a speil on BYB and told him to keep my number and give me a ring when he was ready so i could point him in the right direction.
  6. Darien how sad. RIP litte dog. I am glad you have taken it further. My friend and my daughter rusheda pup to Lort Smith some time ago, my had chewed the cord off and it was bleeding like the proverbial, they took the pup in treated straight away while the account was being sorted. I have also been to an emergency place where they treat straight away while account being sorted, not my dog someone else who came in.
  7. You apply to your Kennel control council and sit an open book exam. But first you need to havea dog that is considered worthy of being bred with.
  8. Sorry about the boy who crossed the bridge.
  9. I believe that when you sell a pup it only has show potential, apart from obvious faults that it is a pet from the get go, if the people want to change down the track, then look at it or get a knowlegeable someone if in another state. I feel that a lot of breeders will not give a newbiea fair go. JMO.
