  1. PM me, I am not going to hijack this thread.
  2. SAR dogs specifically trained to find dead people. It was well over a decade ago, more like 2. Very interesting though, I found scent work to be the most amazing thing to do with a dog.
  3. She certainly would have smelt it all, my cadaver trained dog once took me to a cemetary 6 kilometres away when on a search, then sat and indicated 'you want a body, I found you lots'. Sad that she was distressed by it though.
  4. Good. I didn't come across him on here, but I knew him irl.
  5. Very sorry about the diagnosis, it sounds like she is lucky to have you
  6. done. a lot more than the minimum required for free shipping. oops.
  7. Yes, pain could well have been the cause.
  8. Yep, that is the page. It has busy periods and quiet ones but some good people.
  9. http://homepage.usask.ca/~schmutz/IGcolor.html Schmutz is my go-to for colour genetics, she is usually fairly up to date. She has connections I think with HealthGene, but looking at their page I am not sure they can help you with seal as they say all seal has at least one KB and they can't distinguish from black yet. http://www.healthgene.com/canine-dna-testing/color-testing/?tid=4&btid=76 there is a sighthound colour fb page, has some knowledgeable people on it if you want to raise it there.
  10. Can't recommend an Australian one as I have always gone to the US. Haven't found any issue in sending overseas and results have been prompt with good service. For colour I used VetGen, I was after the grizzle gene in Borzoi and they were the only lab to do it at that time, they threw in K as well.
  11. Pretty sure doggy lust was closer to the mark with my girl, and she wasn't even close to being in season. She just fancied the poor soul on sight. It was embarassing ridiculous just really very funny.
  12. My Jas has a huge thing for an elderly Visla boy, she has only met him 2 or 3 times but she goes absolutely batty, flirts, sings, goes crazy. He couldn't care less
  13. Skysoaringmagpie won Best in Group on the Saturday with one of her Salukis, hope she doesn't mind me posting.
  14. No. That is not hormonal, and it sounds very unusual for the breed too. Sounds like you need some professional intervention in managing this dog.
  15. Agree with this. There is way more to it than a dog biting simply because it is entire. The way they interpret that stat is very poor science imho. They leap to the assumption that it is a cause not just a correlation. That is just bias. It isn't poor science. I checked out the actual paper. They only use descriptive statistics, which is entirely appropriate for a study of that size. They also discuss the limitations of the study in the results. I consider the way it is reported here is inappropriate. I think saying that desexing your dog reduces its chances of being the perpetrator of a fatal attack is irresponsible. I was referring to that interpretation in this article, which is the communication that targets the public audience. The study itself might be fine, but very few people ever read the study, they read these kind of media releases. The accuracy of the communication of science is very important.
  16. I agree with delaying desexing in a large breed if you can manage it. That % figure for fatal attacks is a bit misleading - it is not cause and effect, there can be factors around management and owner demographics that lead to both outcomes. The breeders that only sell desexed often have breeds that are the targets of commercially motivated breeding, such as the common breeds for crossing. In that circumstances early desexing might be the best protection they can give their puppies.
  17. Similar for me, Borzoi are normal. Irish Wolfhounds are big, GSD are medium, border collie and below are small. Long noses are normal.

  19. I don't know what health tests are needed for Weis, apart from that I don't see an issue. Might be suss, might be entirely legit, nothing in your story to indicate either really, except the guy needs to clarify the rules of engagement.
  20. I find it very sweet. I have never seen an animal happier than Arwen was when she had pups, and my other bitch was over the moon to have them around, it is cute to see they still feel that way.
  21. That is pretty much what I expected, polite indifference. But it was more like a full-on family reunion, I wish I had taken some video.
  22. I have only bred one litter of Borzoi, and it only had three pups. On the weekend one of those pups, now 20 months old, came over for a visit. Neither her mum nor my other bitch had seen her for well over a year. The reception they gave each other would best be described as raptuous. Enormous excitement and lots of affectionate face kissing amongst all three, some playing, followed by settling down to sunbake together in identical poses in my yard. After 15 minutes of delighted welcome it calmed down and it was as if she had lived there all her life. I was surprised by how obviously joyous they all were to be reunited. I wasn't sure that would be the case after so long. It was the third time she had visited since leaving but the last time was over 12 months ago. I didn't expect any problem but I didn't expect such overwhelming displays of affection either, it was quite touching. Next week one of the boys comes back for some dog sitting while his owner has a holiday, and it will be interesting to see how they react to him. As they haven't seen him since he first left as a baby he may be harder for them to recognise. I just wondered if this delight at seeing an adult pup was the usual thing?
  23. Yep, and also a breeder who won't automatically assume any and all pups of theirs will suit you. They should be trying to match a pup to your family and lifestyle.
