Poor little girl, and poor you too what a shock. Sad when the oldies start not being able to do everything as easily as they used to, but hopefully she has many active years left.

It was a dreadful crime, I won't put the link because the thread would have to be moved to the cruelty sub forum to avoid upsetting people too much. I found myself wishing he runs into a bunch of animal lovers in prison.

Happy Anniversary. As my old dad used to say 'you get less for murder'.

Perth House / Pet Sitter Recommendations
Diva replied to CrazyCresties's topic in General Dog Discussion
How many animals? A friend does it and is very reliable, but I don't think she would take on a big pack -
No, the growling in play is play.
-
It is not that they look the same, as they have been a range of colours and patterns. But the little quirks, the way they respond, the way they show affection, the style of their play and even the poses they assume are very breed typical and I love it. My first five were all related, and I could see even more similarities in them, it was lovely. efs

I have dogs who growl when playing tug, so did my previous dogs. Never had a resource guarder, they will give me anything at anytime, including the food from their mouths and their favourite toys, with no sign of resentment or aggression. I do not believe there is a correlation between resource guarding and growling while playing. Not in my breed.

"I wonder what you taste like"
-
I suspect you have posted the wrong standard? The OP is much more likely to have an Akita than an Akita (Japanese), unless you have more specific knowledge of their situation.
-
My dogs wouldn't eat the canidae fish recipe. They did well on the Taste of the Wild salmon though.

Are his lungs clear? Osteo in my breed is very aggressive, even after amputation average survival is not very long. I have amputated for other reasons but I would hesitate for osteo. I wish your boy all the best.

Why Doesn't The Ankc (like Most Clubs) Keep Death Stats
Diva replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yep. A good goal though, if it is for a long healthy life. Not so good if it is just length and not quality of course so you do need those who know the 'family' lines to be well informed and honest about the family history. That isn't aways easy info to get, which I guess takes us back to the OP, kind of. I did make longevity a priority when I went looking for sires. It wasn't top of the list by any means but it was in the reckoning. -
Why Doesn't The Ankc (like Most Clubs) Keep Death Stats
Diva replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
You can look at how long parents, g/parents and other relatives have lived. You can use older dogs, or even better store semen from a young dog and use it when his longevity is proven. And dead males are bred, I have heard of litters from frozen semen over 20 years in storage. -
I am so sorry. I lost my heart girl in 1993. I think of her often still.

A Hypothetical Question For Breeders
Diva replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
It is probably an issue of your breed and the lack of a performance community. In my breed it is the same here, but not everywhere. I know of breeders that breed pretty much only for perfomance events (coursing) overseas, and great breeders that breed for both show and coursing and are successful at both. Australia just doesn't have that diversity of perspective for many breeds. -
A Hypothetical Question For Breeders
Diva replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
Glad you are so sure of that, on other groups there is a suggestion that has changed for NSW and looking at their website the wording is certainly ambiguous. I suggested the op ring Dogs NSW in her other thread to check. -
Why Doesn't The Ankc (like Most Clubs) Keep Death Stats
Diva replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
The dog world here seems to do most of everything with little or poor data, it amazes me the assertions that are made without evidence. To gather death data, where there is no obvious incentive for the individual to comply, the controls would need a close and collaborative relationship with their membership. Just doesn't seem likely. I guess a well managed breed club could collect its own, although it would be only a sub set of the breed. -
A Hypothetical Question For Breeders
Diva replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
A lot of people do use their prefix as you mention, they might not even have bitches they intend to breed but the prefix is their brand and why not. I can't figure out if NSW think the prefix landscape is too crowded and want to limit to people with intentions to breed soon, or they have some people claiming the market appeal of prefix while breeding unreg dogs - reg bybs . I suppose it is the later, -

A Hypothetical Question For Breeders
Diva replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think the NSW rules might be you need a bitch on mains reg first before they will grant a prefix-the op was trying to figure that out earlier. If that is in fact their rule: - I would discuss what they really knew about the breed, did our ideas and ethics coincide, find out why they wanted to breed, and why they wanted a pup of mine - make sure they knew there was no money to be made from my breed, it doesn't have a huge pet demand or go for huge prices - check they didn't want to breed or cross breed for hunting - find out what their dog experience was more broadly - discuss the down sides of breeding, and check their whole family was happy with the idea, they could afford it and they had secure suitable accomodation - get a few references, preferably people we both knew and including the breeder of their pet - talk about my inability to guarantee a pup will be suitable, I could only offer potential - talk about how I dislike the show scene but as it is the only objective ref point for the breed in Aust sadly some showing would be expected if she wanted to breed, but only to title . - if all that worked out arrange to meet, if physically possible. And then if I was satisfied, place a pup on coownership with a view to transferring over once I was confident enough. Forgot an important one, make sure they want the dog for its own sake, not just to breed and not as a way to get a prefix, but because they really want her for herself. . -
All I can say is what I would have done if I had bred and placed a puppy with all the health problems you list, and that is refund you in full, be very distressed at the situation, and look long and hard at what was hereditary in this outcome and what that meant I needed to change in future breeding plans. Sometimes the unforeseeable happens, you can't blame a breeder if that is the case, but you can judge them on how they deal with it. Of course we haven't heard their side, I am taking the facts as written. And I am sorry for your distress and your pups ill health.

Clarifying Something On Prefix Application
Diva replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
From that it looks like you do need to own a mains reg bitch before applying, although it is probably worth a phone call to them. Either it is too late at night for me to read properly or it is truly horribly written - "of the intended Dam (Mother) of the bitch that you wish to mate" makes it sound like you have to own the bitch's mother. -
Old dogs are beautiful, they deserve a little extra effort.

That is the most sensible thing I have read in a long time. My first dog was so bonded to me he starved himself near to death when I left him for a few weeks to go on an overseas holiday. I have felt a responsibilty to teach all the dogs that followed that they don' t need me to survive.
