  1. I have managed to do it with a trashed ankle. Its not too bad a walk at all- all on concrete. Be thankful you don't do flyball!! Nothing better than lugging all your stuff back from the overflow at 5pm with the dogs
  2. What a silly little monster!! I had two dogs rip off their nails just before christmas and had the joys of keeping their toes clean and unlicked. Sending good vibes
  3. You should have your bench slip to get you and Ziva in, and the ticket they provide is for your OH :)
  4. ATM I am not confident walking in the dark due to an ankle injury- I do however live near a football field so my dogs get walked on nights when there is sports on and the lights are on. On the other nights I play fetch and set up treat balls etc or do extra trick/obedience training
  5. I find it annoying [plus] too and it needs to be corrected asap. How can we expect people to do the right thing if this stuff is so hard to find? This annoys me no end- Pick up a random dog and take it to vet 1. They tell me they can't take it I need to take it to vet 2 so I drive 20 minutes to vet 2 (with my own dog sitting on the front seat as I don't want her near the dog) Another occasion- pick up another dog and take to vet 2 only to be told I have to drive another 25minutes to the pound as they only take strays outside pound hrs. I told the nurse its was BS and asked to speak to the vet and suddenly she was able to process the dog It takes very little effort for a vet to take in a dog- officers are usually by within 2hrs and clinics should already have isolation facilities set up which I don't and I don't want to risk my own dogs by holding a dog of unknown vaccination status!!
  6. I think each dog has a base line 'energy level' that is then influenced by nutrition, fitness and other environmental conditions (i.e. joint health etc).
  7. I personally would go onto the prescription diet for a little while to give his body a chance to rest and recover then look at introducing the meat and veggies back into the diet. I get roo tails that don't generally have much fat on them which might be an idea if he can tolerate the roo.
  8. Just wondering if anyone with oral and pour on have the packets to compare what is actually in them? Like someone else posted I would be more worried about what else is in them rather than just the does rate of Ivermectin. Ie we can take panadol, dogs can take a relatively smaller dose and cats die if they have any panadol at all. You might get the dose of ivermectin right but unless you look at all the ingredients and check on how lethal they are to dogs you might still hurt your dog. Also if you are not good at working out concentration rates etc then its really not a road I would go down. I tend to just buy double the dose weight and halve the tablets for my dogs. Still a little cheaper but I don't have to do any calculations!!
  9. I couldn't agree more with this!! I have female that marks new territory religiously. But she only goes on grass and has never gone in a flyball or obedience ring (OK she use to run off to pee and poop part way through agility but that was a training issue). One of my entire male boys needs to visit 10 trees when I take him to shows- but knows he can only toilet if he is on grass so we can put anything on the paved section of the back yard and not worry about it being marked on. I just treated it like house training- I went out and purposely toileted him on grass and if I saw him wondering off the grass I would gently say no and pop him back on the grass and praise- then praise more when he went. That being said I always make sure he has had been toileted well before entering particularly challenging areas such as vets or where I know other boys have marked. He knows the cue nose up which means he isn't allowed to sniff and he won't mark if he can't sniff.
  10. I would be seeking a second opinion from a specialist- if your using Cartrophen at 14mths of age what is the dog going to be like when its 5yrs old? Sounds like you need to find out what the cause is so you can try and work out a more systematic approach.
  11. My girl had a tear in her ligament- not as bad as yours. It was strict rest for 6weeks. If it isn't repaired surgically look for a qualified canine physiotherapist who can go through a treatment plan with you. You might need some anti inflammatories, rest followed by some specific exercises to get the best result. Actually even if it is repaired surgically go and see a physio for the best results!
  12. 7 dogs and not one mouser between them. Kelpies when they were younger actually walked around a rat sitting in the back yard, and the one that 'caught' a bird using their front paws released it so it could stalk it again!! We have caught 15 mice in the past week and a half and have actually had one run in front of the dogs and they didn't care!!!! I have had half skinks bought in by the Lappie- the last straw was when she deposited it on my pillow She got told off for that one!
  13. Thats cool- many people don't think about the airbags so I always mention it. I am glad you are having more success
  14. Well there's your first thing to work on. Going in the car needs to be old hat to the pup. With my drooly vomity babies, it was mileage as much as anything that got them over it. I think there's also an anxiety component in a lot of dog's car sickness. What sort of car have you got and where does your pup travel in the car? Not sure if you mean the passenger seat- but just be aware that puppies and air bags don't mix all that well if you have an accident.
  15. Just letting you know it took me 3 years to decide on a stud to use over my bitch for her last litter!!!! I had to go through genetics and what the different lines strengths/weaknesses were and then think about what I wanted to achieve and what my bitches strengths and weaknesses are. You will find the months fly- you might think you have heaps of time but you might be surprised when you look at everything you need to consider that you might be cutting everything a little fine. I also agree with Nekhbet- what if Augustine's pups also need a specific diet? Is it fair to expect your puppy buyers to put in as much time and effort to keep their dogs healthy? You might be better off starting with a tougher foundation bitch so your lines are strong from the get go- instead of trying to fix any dietary intolerances while still trying to keep all the other health conditions under control.
  16. Yes $25 is reasonable....but $45 from the council I feel is not. When I got my other dog done it was by the vet during the de-sexing operation, but it was listed on the bill as microchipping - $60. I don't mind paying out for my dogs but in all fairness it should be roughly the same price everywhere. Hearing that others can have it done up to $35 cheaper sux. Most services you get have a wide range- have a look at products in America Vs Australia. Vets will have different costs because of the quantity they order, the wage they pay their nurses, their own wage, how much they pay for their premises..... You may get other services from your vet cheaper so unless you look at pricing for all the services before get too upset.
  17. That would have been me with my first dog- a Kelpie. She barked, didn't listen, would lunge around and managed to always be at the end of her 'gentle leader'. I was told by another member that if their dog was so bad they would have been to embarrassed to go to training!! I did actually drive home in tears a few times after training- but I wanted to get into dog sports!! She is now an Australian Champion, Flyball Master (has made about 4 errors in 5 years or running compared to my hundred or so), Has her CCD, one pass in Rally O, Herding title, Endurance test and is a Delta dog (visits nursing homes). She still the very rare moment of being an out of control lunatic (when she sees someone she knows from flyball) and I am still left on the end of the lead looking like a numpty who shouldn't own a pet rock!!! Sometimes the unco owner with a completely inappropriate dog just takes awhile to click. I now have a whole pack of Kelpies who are well trained. The Finnish Lapphund however is doing my head in- can do everything..... When she feels like it There are people who go out and buy 'pretty dogs' and don't look at personality. There are others that think they are getting a certain temperament and instead they get a nut case. Ultimately I have learnt the hard way to just focus on my own dog (unless instructing) because as soon as I feel good about myself and my training my dog will find some way to embarrass the hell out of me
  18. From what I can see most white boxers are just sold unregistered if you look at websites and talk to registered boxer breeders.
  19. Off topic!! How so?? I responded to this question from the OP:- with this comment:- which to my mind, is information not at hand. In regard to the question of being in the vicinity of stock, we live in the dairy country of Northern NSW. You might say there are one or two cows. ;) Px I went off topic by bringing up hydatid worm in a topic about heart worm- your statements were all on topic. Hydatid worms can be transferred to humans via the dog so perhaps something you can do some research on.
  20. I got a really cheap comfy lounge for $10 from the salvos (for the dogs to lie on). They Really really loved it........ Unfortunately it became a very cheap BIG dog toy one day I think it will cost me more to get rid of it than it did to buy it
  21. Granted. But it has been recommended to me as a quarterly treatment for heartworm. However, if you are familiar with the history of my Vet as some people on DOL are, then there should be no surprises here. So, it goes without saying that further inquiries will be made. Px Completely off topic Are your dogs around stock? If so using Milbemax monthly would be beneficial as it protects them (and more importantly you) from the Hydatid worm!!
  22. You may be able to get your vet to do an Xray to see if there is any resorption of the tooth root- if there is significant resorption then you know that meaty bones will eventually get them out. If there is no resorption then you know your going to have to get them extracted. Not all vets will feel confident in getting the settings right to do this but if they do then you will have a better idea of what is actually going on under the gum. I have seen a number of baby teeth that just don't fall out- they don't have any resorption of the tooth root so no amount of bones is going to make a difference.
