  1. Can you use showleads for just normal everyday walking? they are very pretty.
  2. Sorry.... I just wanted to say.. vets are a BUSINESS.... They need to make money to continue providing care to your/everyones pets. Why should you get a free consult? You are using the vets time, you get billed for it. They studied at uni for 5+ years to be able to give you a consult.
  3. Finally i can join this thread I am hopefully expecting a puppy early February, a std poodle pup! I have already bought a cute bowl and some toys. I need to stop buying toys and buy useful things! (like clippers and brushes!)
  4. Im very sorry to hear this about your pup My grandmas sheltie was recently diagonosed with a PDA at almost 6 yrs old!!! There are several options to rectify a PDA. One option (and most common for puppies) is surgical ligation. This is where they open the thoracic cavity and physically ligate the extra vessel. This (in vic) is around $1500 so it is a MUCH cheaper option, but the risk is higher and recovery time longer. I dont know if you have this option in WA? My grandmothers shelties PDA was fixed by occluding the vessel through a catheter and that was $4000. Whatever you decide, it will be the right decision for you :D If you want to ask any questions, please ask me.
  5. I would 100% get a urine sample and get it tested to rule out UTI. I think its a very good idea to rule out medical issues first :D
  6. Hi all, cant wait to be able to come to kepala when I get my std poodle puppy, book me in for the feb kepala :D A while to wait!
  7. We do monitor our diabetic patients VERY closely for the first couple of months. After that we do 3 monthly bloods then after a while 6 monthly bloods if they are stable. If she doesnt feel good about her current vet, she should find one she does trust
  8. I would take her to the vet asap. If it is an ear infection treatment needs to be started sooner rather than later to avoid a very nasty infection developing.
  9. Can I just say, I adore some of our clients I love how much they love their pets and how above and beyond they will go for their pets. I love chatting when they come in and love that they realise we really *do* love animals which is why we are in this job! I also love when they bring us chocolates and cakes
  10. If the dog needed to be sedated to clip/clean the wound I'd expect a bill around $200. We have often had to sedate pets as the hotspot is so painful they wont let anyone near it But $800 does seem a bit excessive! Unfortunately with pet insurance, it really is best to insure your pet as soon as you get them so all major things will be covered. Its also annoying but any pre existing condition will exclude the whole area/organ not just the same condition.
  11. We do many many dentals on older patients (they are the ones that need it!) In fact we are doing a dental on an 18yr old this week! If you have top quality equipment/staff/anaesthetics and take precautions such as pre anaesthetic bloods and fluids, anaesthetics even in older dogs are quite safe. No anaesthetic is 100% but they are much much safer than they used to be!
  12. Nooooooo! I already get paid so little as a vet nurse! Seriously though...its as if people think that because we love animals, all procedures/drugs/consults should be basically so cheap that we are working for nothing. I love my job and all the animals that come in, but I still need to make a living. If people want a pet, they need to be prepared for the costs. (both expected and unexpected) I would also definately get Badger on IV fluids. We monitor blood pressure with every surgery, and it is so good to be able to give them a bolus of fluids or up their fluid rate if I see their blood pressure drop a little bit (and it does happen quite frequently!) I also think those on IV fluids recover so much quicker/better than those without.
  13. It is very hard to get into. A small amount of clinics do take on trainees and that is how you get into the course. In Melbourne, a new vet nurse course has started where you dont need to be employed as a veterinary nurse. It is a fulltime course for 1 yr. It is at Vic Uni so not sure if she would be interested in applying for it as it would mean she would have to move to melb.
  14. You cant really 'counteract' the effect. I would get your daughters dog a blood test which will show the kidney enzyme levels so you know if they have been affected or not. If they have been you can feed a diet designed for kidneys which will be better for the kidneys rather than regular food and talk to the vet about other options :D
  15. Well i think i should join this thread My partner and I have bought our first home and moving in end of august, I am planning to get a standard poodle puppy around end of the year/start of next year! All i have been doing is researching breeders and what equipment I will need to get for my pup! I have found some breeders great, and others not so great but I know it will take me a while to settle on a breeder that i am happy with and they are happy with me! My family keep teasing me about getting a poodle , its the typical "its a girly dog" so I cant wait to prove them wrong with my intelligent active manly standard black/blue/silver/red poodle!
  16. I think she needs someone to take them in for the year. She is in sth east suburbs of melbourne.
  17. Does anyone have any suggestions for me... Friend is going overseas for 1 yr, she has two border collies (both males, desexed) Don't want to put them in a boarding kennel. She can afford to pay someone quite a reasonable amount to care for them, i just have no idea of anyone who actually does this.... Any ideas/suggestions?!?
  18. I just saw the bubble blowing one on tv on channel 7 and i immediately thought of this ad! Well done, will be awesome when you see charch on tv!
  19. Thanks! was very hard photo to get through the dirty glass and reflections.
  20. Took this one at werribee zoo. Was hoping to make the photo look as if it were a big crocodile but I still think it looks like a small crocodile
  21. Meant to post these yesterday but forgot. Were taken at werribee zoo on sunday
  22. This is why i want to become a ranger Sick of the useless rangers that cant id a breed to save their life and never want to go pickup strays afterhours.
  23. Most definately take the pup for as many visits as possible. I always encourage puppies to come in as often as possible as well as fearful dogs. If we are quiet, i will take the dogs/owners out the back with lots of treats and make the whole clinic a fun place
