Id go with raw, no point in cooking it for them, will probably destroy half the goodness in it. Mine love salmon and Charlie loves raw salmon heads.

Good to have you back mate

The current debate aside, what do you actually do with your dog? How often does it get to see other dogs? Other than your sister's dogs does it ever play offleash with others? My dogs ignore others for the most part, although they will happily play if I don't need them to do anything. I have never tried to make them this way, I put this down to the fact that we do alot of dog sports so they are constantly meeting new dogs at training and competition so it isn't such a big thing to them. A dog that doesn't have that constant exposure to new dogs (or is always stuck on a lead when it happens) is going to be more excited at the sight of another dog than one who sees and plays with new ones on a regular basis.

Can Someone Please Break It Down For Me!
DeltaCharlie replied to smisch's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
International program is the one for most dogs. I made the mistake of registering mine as regular and now have to pay to transfer them both over Regular program jumps one size lower and doesnt have a spread jump. It is good for dogs that are aging or physically struggling to get around a course at normal heights. The measuring cutoffs are a little different to ANKC though, although it shouldn't affect Jock as he is only tiny. Delta on the other hand has to jump 650 at ADAA but only 500 at ANKC. If she struggles with it or we start doing alot of ADAA trials (and therefore she has to jump that height regularly) I will switch her back to regular (means next height down which is 550). Charlie just scraped in as a 550 dog thank god. Does that make sense? As for the junior handler, Jock wont be able to run the same course twice. For each event you can either enter him in the junior international program with your neighbour running him, or enter him in the normal international with you running him. I imagine you should be able to switch between yourselves throughout the day though. You might choose to run all the agility courses with him and your neighbour can run the jumping courses (as an example). -
Feeding Frequency Raw Feeders
DeltaCharlie replied to Tiggy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If I was feeding dry food I would probably feed twice a day as I wouldn't like the idea of too much expanding in their stomach in one go, maybe they are the people the OP has been speaking to. My dogs eat about 350g of food each day, I couldn't imagine splitting that into 2 meals, would barely be bite sized portions. Pups I feed twice a day, but the morning one is usually only a chicken wing etc. I would never skip a day with a pup, although there has been the odd time that they got both meals at the same time. By the time Delta was about 6-7 months old she was on one meal a day. -
Feeding Frequency Raw Feeders
DeltaCharlie replied to Tiggy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Mine are fed once a day, usually when I go to bed (so could be anywhere between 10pm and 4am). If I fall asleep on the lounge then they get fed the next morning Mine do get fasted once every 2-3 weeks but it is usually because I forgot to buy food and when you realise at 1am there isn't much you can do about it. I never deliberately fast them, although I know people who do. Its good to know that I can miss a meal for whatever reason and it wont stress them out. The best thing for me about feeding random times is that they don't start nagging me for dinner There is no behaviour more annoying to me than dogs who start barking and whinging at the exact time they normally get fed and owners who then drop what they are doing to feed them immediately. Mine know that more food will arrive at some point, but they never actually know when it will come so don't start expecting it. -
I would think that they wouldn't be that much harder than chicken frames to cut up...Maybe if you cut between the ribs, you could just snap the backbone. Yeh I guess. I used to cut up chicken frames for the cat and it wasn't too difficult.
-
How easy would they be to cut into smaller portions? One of those looks like it would last each of my dogs a week

Delta is 2 and still not interested in balls She has been taught to retrieve though (I need her to bring me a ball for flyball) but she is only interested in the treat at the end, its not a game to her. Give the poor little girl some time, she is only a puppy and in a strange new place. My Cody was as ball obsessed as they come but he didn't really start showing signs of that until about 12months of age.

2009 Training/title Wish List
DeltaCharlie replied to Ptolomy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hmm... haven't really thought too much about it as I'm fairly new to the whole trialling thing. Delta Agilty She should get her AD fairly soon, so long as the silly little mistakes are eliminated (and the judge stops waxing the damn table ) I'd like to try for her JDX by the end of the year too. Few passes in open courses and games would be nice too. Flyball I'm hoping to get her racing fairly soon. Her FD, FDX and FDCH would be nice. Obedience I haven't really done much training for obedience but she is a natural and they are constantly on my back about trialling her. I don't particularly enjoy obedience but she definitely has the skills for CCD and CD so if a spare weekend or 2 fits in I may go for a few passes. Not sure yet. Charlie Agility Charlie is the opposite for me, I don't want him to get titles If he gets the rest of his JD passes he may have to stop trialling as I don't think he is ready for excellent (if it wasn't for the fact that Delta was going too he wouldn't even be trialling yet). I don't want him to get his final ADAA elementary passes either coz then he would get his BAAD and wont be able to do elementary anymore. Considering he cannot weave more than 3 poles, he won't be able to enter anything at ADAA either. So for Charlie, I shall keep wishing for a dropped bar (I still want good contacts so he can't miss them ) in each run In reality though, he should get his JD and hopefully same games passes (so long as weaves are not involved ) Flyball He should get his AFCH pretty soon, depending on the number of comps we do he may even make it to 400 (and whatever title that happens to be, FM perhaps?) I would also like to do some more herding with Delta, they absolutely love lure coursing so we will do more of that, and lots of swimming and having fun together -
I used to stick to a pretty strict 75% meat, 15% bones, 10% organs (and did so for years) until I got lazy and just started feeding lots of meaty bones. Although mine are having too much bone at the moment and I need to cut back a bit and feed more meat. Easiest way to tell is if their poo is white there is too much bone, if it is black then you need more bone. You get used to analysing poo ETA when I was more organised about it all I used to feed mince from the abbatoir 4 days a week (one day was often canned fish), bones (chicken wings/drumsticks/frames; lamb bones etc) 2 days a week and kidneys/liver 1 day a week. They also got a spoonful of yoghurt and raw egg once a week. That worked extremely well and it is the plan I use for puppies as they need their diets much more balanced than adults. Like I said though, now Im lazy and there is no real order to what I feed, Ive been doing it for so long that I don't need to actually pay as much attention to it, I just know when they need different stuff if that makes sense.

Charlie loves Salmon heads, Delta just stares back at them  I'm in Sydney and get them from the local coles for $2.49/kg. No idea where else you could get them from though.

Treat Recipes - Care To Share?
DeltaCharlie replied to poochmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Going from memory coz its been a long time since Ive looked at the recipe 2 185g tins of tuna in springwater 1 (approx) cup of flour (I use self raising coz thats all thats in my cupboard but Im pretty sure my recipe actually said plain) 2 eggs garlic powder or chopped garlic grated cheese Preheat oven to about 180C (conventional). Use a fork to break up all the tuna chunks. Put tuna, eggs, and a tiny bit of water into a blender and blend until its runny. Pour it back into the bowl, sprinkle garlic in and add flour. Mix until it has the consistency of cake mix. Sometimes I need more flour than others for some reason Pour into baking dish and cover with cheese. Bake for 15-20mins or until it pulls away from the edges. My dogs absolutely love this stuff, its the only thing Charlie will choose over a tennis ball so it must be good :D It was originally given to me by someone at flyball as I needed something he would value more than the ball in his mouth. If I can manage to cook it, it must be easy -
I have read shaping success (loved it) and have ruff love sitting in my bookshelf untouched. I think I started to read ruff love but it mustn't have held my interest or something coz it is in the bookshelf now... I also have crate games which is very good. It really depends on exactly what you are after. Crate games are good for impulse control and just generally getting the dog used to the crate, shaping success is very handy for giving ideas on using your dogs natural behaviours to teach them what you want (shaping them )

I prefer the look of the photos that Nikon takes, but that is just a personal thing that you can decide for yourself (or you may not see any difference). I have a D40 and a D70 with various lenses, some of which I never use One thing that I was told when first looking is to stick with either Canon or Nikon as they have been around for zonks and aren't likely to go anywhere. Nikon lens mounts havent changed since the 50s (so you may even know someone with old lenses lying around), not sure about Canon. While I personally don't see any of the other brands going anywhere any time soon, it is something to consider if you need replacement parts down the track and the company is no longer around.

I would be getting him to a vet. Throwing up more than once, let alone every 5 minutes isn't good. He is also at risk of becoming dehydrated if he continues to throw up, it is incredibly easy to dehydrate a dog, especially a pup. It could turn out to be nothing but you will never forgive yourself if it turns out to be something major and you delayed.

Why months? My kelpie started at 13 months with a 6 inch channel and in 3 weeks was weaving 12 poles in a straight line with speed. We worked at it twice a day, morning and night for about 3 minutes at a time with lots of rewards. Not all dogs will learn that quickly though. Cody took about 2 months (although that was only practising a few times a week), Delta took about 3 days and it has been 12 months with Charlie and he still can't weave.

Im assuming the dog is a BC? Id say go for it If its a great dane or a mastiff or something then hold off...

I think it ultimately depends on the dog and how fast they physically mature. I have always been told that a good rule of thumb is jumps no higher than the wrist until 9months and then no higher than the elbow until 12months. Delta started agility at about 7months but it was only tunnels, planks of wood, running over lowered contact equipment (no stopping), wobble boards, etc. Her jumps were just the bars on the ground. At 12months I started allowing her to jump 200mm, moved it to 400mm at about 14months and didn't allow full height jumps until about 16-17 months. Delta matured rather quickly though, she is only a small dog and hasn't really physically changed since about 12months. Dogs that mature slower than that will obviously need to wait longer. I wouldn't allow medium/large dogs to start weaving until they had finished growing. I started weaving with Delta at about 14months (or possibly older). Small dogs are a little different as they dont really bend their spines in the weaves, they kinda jump back and forth.

Umm pumpkin is something people generally give dogs to loosen their stools. So I am assuming that it will make them worse. What is her typical diet like (when she isn't sick)? The only 2 things you have mentioned I steer clear of whenever possible with my dogs.

Should I Get My Pups Desexed On The Same Day?
DeltaCharlie replied to snr's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Delta and Charlie were done a few days apart. (Delta was actually at the vets when I rang and inquired about Charlie, who was then desexed before I could take him). Neither of mine skipped a beat though, so much for having a few days of quiet -
I use filters to protect the lens but I don't take photos through them. The cheap filters are great at ruining photos Ive found. If you have the money to buy an expensive filter then go for it.

Sounds like she would be better suited to an older, calmer, already sort of trained dog. Probably a bit late now but is it an option to return the dog to the breeder/rescue and look at an older rescue dog for her (if she absolutely must have a dog)? Just because you train it doesn't mean it will be trained for her. If she doesn't continually reinforce the training then the dog is going to work out that while it needs to behave for you, the rules dont apply with your mother.
