  3. Thats a shame ness, I work but hopefully can wangle those days off. Work gets in the way of all my hobbies ;)
  4. Ok.. we're on for tracking this year, I joined the tracking club of SA about 7 years ago but never had time to attend any training Hopefully 2012 is the year for a tracking adventure :D We will be going to Blackwood SA around easter.....we've got a lot to learn but I can't wait!
  5. If you Google 'PNP' you can find info on renal dysplasia in Bernese Mountain Dogs. It is infrequently seen in Scandinavia and any male who produces it is removed from the gene pool. I dont believe there is a DNA test for BMD's but would love to know if the whippet test is appropriate to our breed
  6. Nothing. All Prefixes are published in every State gazette - even prefixes registered in other States. It states - Objections to an approved prefix must be notified to the office withing three months from the date of this publication. SA dont publish them and havent for years
  7. The importation rules have changed and i think that no country (maybe UK still but i dont think they have any swissy breeders either) can you import less than at least 9 months + quarantine so 10 months minimum before he/she gets to you
  8. I know bernese that have eaten chickens and tried to eat sheep..........
  9. Most places they can come in at 9 months, you need to contact some breeders that are happy to keep a dog for you that long and do the health testing (hips elbows eyes etc) and do all the rabies testing/titres (this takes 6 months). Quarantine is 30 nights and about $1400, freight would be the worst bit (it cost me $5500 just in airfare to get a 14 week old berner from sweden 4 years ago, they are now a category 4 country so, 9 months til they can come ) If you get a nice breeder who wont charge you too much to buy and raise the dog it would be maybe $12,000 all up You then need the breed to be recognised by the ANKC, theres a few people on here who could help you get a breed recognised by the ANKC. Beware of Swissy temperaments though, there are some 'sharp' temperaments around and make sure that there are excellent orthopaedics behind the parents.
  10. All dogs are what you make of them and not every bernese is as described as above. A berner doesn't shed anymore than a border but yes...bigger dog. You can import a Swissy from O/S and breed them
  11. I'm so sorry Kerrie I hope she's home soon. I added her to my FB for what it's worth
  12. Now that you can make names up to 30 letters 11 letters is not so bad
  13. Also document what could happen in every imaginable scenario!
  14. If it's a female I'd get a joint prefix for any litters thats a mix of all 3 owners.
  15. I breed Bernese and have 7 at home. In an ideal world we would be home with them all the time :D Mine all get 1/4 marrow bone when I go to work and have a munch and the a sleep. When I had one BMD she was home alone while we were at work and coped fine. I believe if you arent around the next best thing is catching zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's. As long as you puppy is a big part of family life when you are home they are happy. All they want in the whole world is to be with their people. They are awesome.
  16. Bernese Mountain Dog? They are lovely family dogs, love a walk but dont go nuts if they dont get one every day. Need socialisation and at least beginner training as they do grow large. She once a year big time, but rest of the year not so bad.
  17. I was the first person in Australia to DNA test my Bernese Mountain Dogs for Degenerative Myelopathy, as far as I am aware only 2 other breeders in the country have done this also. My foundation bitch is Carrier, she already had a litter prior to this testing being available and thankfully the sire was Clear Even if Carrier is bred to Carrier, the offspring can be clear, carrier or at risk. Any offspring who then have an 'At Risk' result have only a 10% chance of developing the disorder. Hopefully more breeders will be utilising the testing soon to get a clearer picture of the breed status.
  18. ANy one know group numbers and results from group 6 in ALbury please?

  20. Perhaps ring her and tell her you have realised that your questions may have been a bit OTT, chances are she may be happy to give you a synopsis over the phone.
  21. I wonder if it's beacause 15-20 years ago people had more time? Maybe worked less and had more time to do dog stuff, mortgages weren't so horrendous 10 years ago. I work shift work so luckily I often have days off during the week...I dont know how people can work 5 big days then spend all weekend getting up early to go to shows, they must be pooped and never get anything done?! Face judging happens of course but I truly think most judges do their best and it's the few that ruin it for the many (this could be me being a mary poppins here ) I think that for new people to get good dogs is hard as they are unknowns and with the days of oodles and 'puppy farms' their is a lot of distrust. and breeders spend so much time and effort getting their 'lines' that some don't just want to hand them to people. JMO also the council wont let you have as many dogs now, and ANKC should advertise more!
  22. Just got mine off the posty, love it! Thanks :D
