Pet insurance - who are the best ?
Dogsfevr replied to persephone's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Great idea but sadly in this day & age it doesnt cover much depending on the issue . The current cover i have on my puppy gives me $30 000 cover per year ,8000 for hip/joint surgery etc for just over $700 a year . We get breeder discount at our vet & they are independent clinic with awesome prices but even for them they had to rise prices & most vets arent after hr clinics anymore so you have to go to an emergency vet -
There is nothing you can do . You accepted the guardianship rules most likely based on getting a cheap dog or refund after some point .The 4 litters would have been clearly stated in the contract . Often these contracts DO NOT cover what happens if it goes pear shape but very much outlines what happens if you dont follow through on the contract . It also often doesnt discuss medical decisions & expenses in these kinds of scenarios as ownership is two ways . Sadly animal cruelty starts with people allowing these guardianship programmes to happen in the extreme & never asking questions first .aka why 4 litters ,what happens if litters are big ,how old is too old ,what vet checks must happen for 3/4 litter for breeding clearance . Are they a member of a org(yes some accept crossbreeds & if so what is there COE )Have they meet the COE of the org . What is your state law on breeding ? I co own dogs on breeders terms but its clearly outlined ,there is the opt out & animal health first & all parties trust each other etc ,nearly 30 yrs of this method has worked well I gather the biggest issue you have is the fact that the bitch is now at risk of passing away due to infection which could have happened with the first litter anyway .AS a breeder myself just like humans the process can come with significant risks & lots of joy. Breeding comes with risks that many who sign up for a dog with a good deal tend to not want to research fully . As a breeder would we have done the 4 litter absolutely not ,2 here is max 3 only if a breeding option comes up that is a massive betterment for the breed option in health clearance status of producing clears. My question would be when did she go back to the breeder for whelping ? How many ultrasounds did she have prior ? Did she have an x ray pre whelping? Was she sick ,acting strange or have any discharge prior to whelping?? Who is making the decisions at present & at what cost with the vet .Are both parties on the same page for expenses ,are you being involved in vet discussions & decisions & the recovery process. Who gets the final say on heroic efforts .This would be my concern asap.

I think Valmae is having a rant that everyone should put pictures of puppies & prices in the ad to make life simple for her so she can make a personal judgement off whether its good enough for them We never put pictures or prices in our ads .If people where interested they contacted us where a personal discussion between both parties happens & all aspects of what there after & whether what we have will suit . We did clearly say no shipping & 99% of people never ever read the ad anyway & would contact us wanting them shipped

Pet insurance - who are the best ?
Dogsfevr replied to persephone's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It really depends on the breed & whether they want basic cover to premium etc etc. I have a friend with giant breeds & they use Woolworths & i can tell you they have had there monies worth from them. It really just comes down to the whats & then picking . Most have the same underwriter Should ad this is the first time i have ever opted for pet insurance very multi dog household & its never been a need for us & realistically still isnt but with prices of so many things going up & a large breed puppy we are using it especially for the first 15 months/2 years & after going through all sorts of choices ,looking at covers ,total amount etc etc i went with Woolworths too -
Just make sure whom ever does is a registered business with insurance . Too many people are just offering pet sitting with no skills, business just a fast buck & make sure you have a contract of what your expectations are on time spent etc etc. Some have so many jobs on the go that the dogs get a in/out feed & water change & thats often when neighbour issues occur & barking

I would not rush out and vaccinate for Lepto & if you did i would seriously understand the vaccination, the pro.cons & the risks that are very well known world wide with the vaccine . I am not anti vaccine BUT i would not vaccinated for Lepto

The risk of parvo is just as high without the older dog . You can bring it home on your shoes & any other item that goes on the ground , We start lead training our puppies in litters at 5 weeks out the front .Risk management is common sense & for some areas of the burbs it is a massive risk . You can just walk a house or too down with pup & older dog seeing the world is just as important as is lead training .

Breed advice - Vizsla vs Flat Coated Retriever
Dogsfevr replied to nat_o's topic in General Dog Discussion
Gundogs are bird dogs most have a good natural tendency to want to do what there meant to do . I have Gundogs mine catch & dispatch birds in the backyard its just reality in owning one . I expect it will happen & if there not interested its a bonus. Teaching to leave wildlife in general will be hard work no matter what breed & most likely a better solution is to have a dog yard set up that allows the dog time out from being over stimulated to the outdoors & a safe zone for when it needs it . Personally i would go English Pointer over a GSP any day of the week . GSP can also be very velcro, very vocal & destructive. -
The key with licki mats or the likes is dont just give them when your going out some dogs figure it out quickly that they come with departure , Give them when home or when ever . As to products like everyone as mentioned choices are like a box of chocolates what works for one is useless on another . Vet drugs these days have come a long long way & we board numerous dogs on various prescriptions & no sleepy or zoombies
-
Any breed can get sep anxiety especially as many owners do not treat there dogs as animals & do everything for them or take them everywhere never teaching them life skills to be a independent & happy on there own when required . Some dogs that always had a mate may have rellied on that dog for its confidence. Some breeds are certtainly more velcro but good owners set them up for successs

Breed advice - Vizsla vs Flat Coated Retriever
Dogsfevr replied to nat_o's topic in General Dog Discussion
Both breeds are great BUT 2.5 acres doesnt equate to being the right dog . Both breeds are smart, intelligient & need there brain enriched ,lots of land doesnt tick that box. Off the 2 i would say Flatties are calmer ,Vizslas are well known as velcro dogs . Flatties need brushing weekly . Both breeds will either openly invite strangers into the home & they love people or they may alert . Both breeds can be a nightmare if not enriched -
As there at the age where there playing outside & learning about life they will get a good appetite quickly with all the new daily enrichment they should/are getting . Start getting them groomed trained for there new owners ,lead training all these things add such valuable tools to a puppies growth on life skills

Whats the recommended breeding shedule for a bitch ?
Dogsfevr replied to jjj8's topic in General Dog Discussion
why do you want a second litter?? Are you repeating the breeding? Did the first breeding produce quality pups(which you wont know until older). To be honest as a breeder we would be reluctant to breed a bitch that didnt get good milk or motherhood wasnt for them . Producing puppies is nothing compared to the factors of why i should be a bitch potentially again . If your registered then the rules are covered the the rules & regs. State laws may cover other aspects that you should be very aware off as a breeder especilly in NSW -
Bowl of water yes BUT make sure its not a full bowl that they could drown . As someone who has bred small breed pups at 4 weeks some eat like gusto some dont . Simple reality is there is no easy option ,raising puppies is hard work as you have found out & you need to teach with patience lapping & food . We generally use a spoon or our finger . When the penny drops it will happen .Fun and messy . Heat pad out BUT again be mindful of the air con if on & them not being in a drafty spot . Just be patient & feed time is like finger painting time sometimes you just have to let them go & they learn from it it. Warmish flannel & wet ones your best friend

I dont let my dogs go near other dogs full stop & it peeves me off bigtime that so many dog owners think there dog can do what it wants whether onleash or offleash My dogs are showdogs, well behaved around dogs & have the etiquette of good behaviour at many events, vet waiting rooms etc . Im lucky to have a great Lake to wlk around thats onleash only but still have to deal with the odd numpties with extender leads . Also offleash NEVER means i want your dog to come over . For me offleash means a place i can take my dog & be offleash for me it never means my dog is entitled to go do what it wants whilst offleash to other dogs . Luckily i dont frequent offleash places due to so many stupid dog owners . And my other peeve extender leads where stupid owners let them to the end & think its funny wrapping around your legs or my dogs legs if i didnt step in & take action . Dog parks have no etiquette & most people there dont even bother to read the local council dog act of what "offleash " means & what is reportable . Most dog owners should be fined more often And before the do gooders who will go on about dogs will be dogs umm no thats an excuse for owner failure . People who just make excuse after excuse for why there dog did something in the moment . My current old boy loves his walks, doesnt care about other dogs just likes to mind his own business & watch the birds that give him more high value pleasure BUT he does have a medical issue so i am very mindful when idiots allow there dogs to "just " approach without a care in the world that the other dog may be deaf, blind, partially blind.old, medical issue . Those dogs are entitled to the same wonderful life pleasures as the dog park or offleash dogs minding there own business. Most of my friends have brought chect cam videos off amazon for walking there dogs incase there is an issue & its reported to the council

We have used farex for near 30 yrs at the 3/4 week stage never had any issues . Used on breeds that would be similar size to the op pups which is small . Farex is used by many successfully with goats milk and becomes a good intro to food. We don't start meat until they have mastered the farex stage as there so small and then we absolutely use mince and many other options by then . When we had our large breed pups it was the polar opposite in what they could eat safely . I would not give a tiny breed a bone until way older . As a note a friend very successful Pom breeder lost a pup at 3/4 weeks as they opted to do the meat suggestion and pup was to small and not ready & choked to death . Small breeds do need a common sense approach
-
Dont go crazy with foods & additivies on the bitch ,you need to take a step back with everything & think logical . What she eats can go into her milk & through her & affect the pups so adding everything on top of the meds shes getting needs to have a common sense approach . We have solely bottle feed numerous pups due to lack of milk, mother refusing, top ups . The time frame its taking you to feed the 2 pups is way too long . Does this syringe have a teat on the end or are you just dripping the milk in ?? We can feed 6/8 in that time . Pooping after meals is not a regular thing we just wee them . Being on formula should not mean the runs unless it doesnt agree with them . Our pups had terrible runs on wombaroo & no one really uses it anymore & divetalact was tno better . Hence why we use goats milk the closest to mums milk . The old hands still use carnation milk . I would still be trying the bottle or looking at whelping supplies webpage for premmie/small dog teats
-
We never use wombaroo. We use premmie teats and bottle feed every 2 hrs . Every 8 hrs is not a choice . We have also tube feed and it is not easy and gas big issues if done wrong and it's very easy to do wrong . There a plenty of old recipes that can be used but that's based on the fact your savvy and the vet is savvy . Both pups aren't gaining weight in the manner I would expect and if her milk is low neither will thrive . We use goats milk with thickened cream added and bottle raised countless pups BUT there feed on a regular schedule. We have used special brews when required to get pups up j going but this is after our vet being involved a breeder vet . Some pups can be bad suckers especially when getting dehydrated and going flat . The runs may be due to the milk formula, her milk may be going blah . But bottle feeding will happen you have to keep on top off it and not over feeding some pups are hard work but 8 hrs is not going to head help . Vet still sounds like a nob . But
-
Did the vet know it had the runs?? Did they check for cleft palette? Did they give any form of anti biotics ?? What kind of milk are you using ?? What milk supply does she have ?? I would not tube feed unless you have the right gear & been shown. This pup will be becoming very dehydrated at this point . Is the mother pushing pup away ?? Is it weeing ?? I would certainly be finding a vet savvy with puppies & asap with the Christmas break . There could be many reasons but you need a vet irrespective

i would read it as only elbows done . From my experiences the reader will clearly right notes of any issues or poor films ,placement etc etc .

Smelly dog beds! (why are dog beds so expensive!)
Dogsfevr replied to DMcT's topic in General Dog Discussion
laudromat nearly all have a pet wash machines so we go there every few months for a super duper wash but cot protectors are great on dog beds although our dogs beds are baby cot mattresses with cot protectors so much easier . -
Yes the bowls being raised is important & often harder with other dogs in the home but they all learn. The baily chair can be very confronting for a dogs & place significant strain on the bag & legs
