I would try half a tablet a day of the claratyne. I give my grown pug, aprox 9.2kg, a whole tablet. Some people find they have to try a few different anthitamines on their dog to get one that works for them but I have found claratyne to be quite sucessfull on a number of dogs I have given it to. This is a good link in relation to antihistamines. http://www.ingleburnvet.com.au/antihistamines.htm

Glad to hear things improved and that there is no snot or coughing. I am rubbing my eyes at the moment because of all the pollon and dust in the air so it oculd well be that she just has an allergy. You could try some antihistamine tablets if she starts again after playing in the grass. I use the human claratyne tablet with the pugs.

Can Prednisolone Cause Anxiety?
puggy_puggy replied to Mum to Emma's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Poor baby. Hope you can find out what the shadow is and fix it. Reading your original post again his symptoms do sound more like the effects of pain then cortisone. -
I'm investigating as to whether a carpal wrap would be of assistance with a 6 month old pug. When she came into rescue at 7 weeks she had quite severe knuckling over and valgus of the wrist. Her diet was changed which greatly improved both problems and now at 6 months her wrist and leg is much stronger but it is still a little wonky and you can see that she has a slight bowing of the leg. She is a tiny little pug 4.5kg and at the most she will probably only get to 5.5kg. When she was with me, from 7 weeks to 5 months, my vet said that he would rather not split the leg (he last saw her at 4 months) as it can cause other problems and it was better to let her grow and gain strenght in the leg. I am wondering now that she is 6 months if a soft carpal wrap would be of assistance? Something like this http://www.dogleggs.com/files/carpalbrace.cfm Here's a photo of her with her sister and mum. She is in the middle and you can see that her front leg on the right bows.

Good idea to take her to the vets if you can't be sure of what it is. If it is a hotspot then you could use baby curash powder on it to dry it out. -
I think that the smaller the dog is the less likey they are to do damage. As long as they aren't being feral and jumping up and down from things and you can stop them calm them down it should be ok. The older rescue pugs I have had desexed and spayed I have never confined and they basically got back to doing normal things the next day. And not one of them developed problems The rescue pups and my female pug are the only puppies that I have had experience with when it comes to desexing at a young age. I put my pug in a play pen for the first few days, which she hated, and she ened up get a bit of gunky pus cyst thing on her suture line that burst and eventually cleared up and she didn't run around nearly as much as the rescue puppies.

I would feed chicken and veggies rather then rice. Grains are not a natural part of a dogs diet and can cause alot of allergies. With the veggies you can either put them through the food processor so they are pureed or steam them. As for how much to feed. 10% of his body weight split up into either two or three meals a day. With the meat making up approx 80% of the food and the veggies 20%. So seeing that he is 6.5kg you would be feeding 650grams of food a day with 130grams being veggies and 520grams being the meat. How long are you going to be feeding this for? As it is not good to feed dogs meat (phosphorus) without bones (calcium) as it leads to growth deformities. If you are going to be feeding this diet for more then a few days I would really suggest that you go and get some minced chicken carcusses (some places call it puppy mince but you have to make sure it is meat and mince) to make sure your pup is getting the right balance.

I would say go for it. Your dog will not only get alot of enjoyment out of it you will also. What state do you live in?

Seriously I think they will be fine. My two were 4.2kg (9.25lbs) and 3.5kg (7.71lbs) and they rough and tumbled with eachother like maniacs. (un dog people would think that they were fighting and wanting to kill eachother ) If you have ever seen a pug do a puggy run you will know how fast they can run also. Come to think of it I did put them in their puppy pen every now and again to settle down and so they had less space to go crazy in. Do you have a pen? Are you keep both the girls? My two were adopted by the same human mum which was a real blessing as they absolutley adore eachother and are the best of friends. They actually came back for a visit today, I haven't seen them for over a month, and it was heartwarming to see what good buddies they are.

Others might yell at me for saying this but seriously do they have to run tests? Why couldn't they just prescribe the meds and see if they work. When my female pug was younger she would wet herself when she got excited all the time. My vet said that hopefully she should grow out of it but if she didn't they could prescribe some meds for her. Thankfully she has gottne better now she is older. Going off to google what tests could possibly be needed to determine incontinence, because I really can't think of what they would do, and if prescribing an incontinence drug to dog that isn't incontanant would harm them.

Thanks I will know this if I have to use it again with a dog that has a normal appatite. I was syringe feeding, the cancer boy, the special high calorie Science Diet canned food and he would eat bits of roast chicken or steak so mixing it in with his food was not an option and because it turns to a thick glug very quickly putting it into a syringe didn't work.

It really doesn't sound like he is being naughty. If he was being naughty I think he would probably me more likey to get on your bed during the day and pee on it and get off and go and do something else. My pug boy did this a few times when he was young and it was because he was peeved off at me for some reason or another. Have things changed recently with his sleeping arrangements? Do you have a new dog? Doesn't seem like your vet is being very understanding. There is a medication that can help incontenet dogs stop peeing themselves. I am wondering if they would be willing to prescibe this and see how things go. In the mean time you could grab some puppy pee pads or the similar things that humans have to put under them in bed and put it down on your bed for him to sleep on.

They are probably talking about the growth plates fusing.

Can I ask how the hell you got the metamucil into her? I was caring for a pugy that had stomach lymphoma which caused him to have constant diarrhea. His vet suggested Metamucil to try and clog him up a bit. The only way I could get him to take it in was to mix up 2 spoonfulls with just a little water so it turned into a glob of stuff and then put bits of it in his mouth and hold his mouth closed till he swallowed. Saying this his cancer made him not want to eat most things so maybe a normal healthy dog would just eat it.

Fantastic news. You should start feeding sardines at least once a week from now on.

Can Prednisolone Cause Anxiety?
puggy_puggy replied to Mum to Emma's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I ment that if people don't chose to do chemo with thier dogs with cancer prednisolone is used as an alternate therapy that will buy the dog a little bit of extra time. -
What breed are they? A month and a bit ago I had two rescue pug pups (litter sisters), that I was fostering, spayed at 5 months of age. I basically decided that couldn't keep them quiet and let them play with eachother as they normally did. Because they were so little and the cut and stitches were not that big I wasn't that worried. All I did was keep an eye on them to make sure they didn't pull at eachothers stitches and I didn't walk them untill their stitches came out two weeks later. So if you have a small/toy breed I would say don't worry they are so light and the suture line is so little that things should be fine.

Poor girl. I probably would have tried the wax remover or almond oil before cutting her coat.

Can Prednisolone Cause Anxiety?
puggy_puggy replied to Mum to Emma's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
In humans it can cause people to have psychosis / go mad so there is a good chance that in animals it can do the same thing. I was looking after a pug, 6kg, that had stomach lymphoma and he was on 5mg twice a day so 10mg. Prednisalone is used as an alternative to chemo. I really would be look for an alternative to cortisone. If what he has is presumed to be an allergy then maybe you could try antihistamine tablets. -
Try some lamb ribs as they are much softer then the weight bearing bones like the shanks.

Might need a course of antibiotics. -
Well her responding to you telling her off is a good start. I think that there is hope as she has only been with you for a very short time so yes she is still trying to find out how to fit in. If I was in your situation I would keep her muzzled but continue to socalize her with the other dogs and repremand her when she does something wrong. Maybe try a spray water bottle as well as vocal repremand. Do you feed them all together? Have her on a lead at this time and put down her bowl last. And yes get in contact with the trainer you are recommended.

Introducing Dogs / Aggression?
puggy_puggy replied to euripides's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Has he ever played with other dogs? I would think it was quite sad if a dog got to the age of two years and had never played with other dogs. Maybe you over reacted to the staffy situation. What exaclty occured? Growling? Standing over eachother? Actual biting? Could they have been play growling or fighting? Was this on your own property? If so was the other dog on a lead? Many people suggest that if youa re bringing a new dog onto your property that you actually meet that dog on nutrel ground out the front of or down the street with your dog and then go onto your property. The noises that some dogs make whilst playing can be mistaken by people as being vicious. Many dogs might have a growl at eachother when they first meet but one will back off and things will be fine. -
Question Regarding Dominance
puggy_puggy replied to poochmad's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My female pug likes to be very near to me whilst she is eating bones as she knows that I am protecting her from the other pugs stealing it away from her. I always supervise bone time and sit outside with them whilst they are eating. -
Sounds like they are sorting out pack stucture. With the pugs I let them have little fights because one of them will usually back off and give up but I am not sure about what people do with bigger dogs as they can actually hurt eachother. Did you tell her off when she started humping your male and when she got into a fight with your female? She needs to know that according to you she is bottom of the pack because at the moment it seems like she is trying to be top of the pack. You could possibly have her on a correctional collar and start socialising her with your other dogs and correct her when she starts her behaviour. I am not a professional so I would say you need to contact someone who is that can come around to your house and observe how things work and her behaviour.
