How Do You Give Your Dog Tablets?
puggy_puggy replied to giraffez's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ohh yes a few other dogs all lining up works a treat as well. The one getting the tablet sure as hell make sure they eat their treat, with tablet in it, so the other dogs dont. -
Partially Torn Dew Claw

Time for the vets so they can remove it. Otherwise it will become infected. I usually home treat, medicate most things when it come to my pugs because I believe that people rush off to their vets far to often. But for this you need a vet unless you can pull it yourself with a pair of tweezers. -

I feel sad for any puggy I see without dew claws. My two have them and they use them to clean their faces with. It is also thought that they help with balance. If kept cut short they usually cause no problems. -
Carbs (rice, pasta etc) are not needed in a dogs diet. They are a major source of skin issues in dogs and some believe they are a source of cancer. So don't bother with the grains. Tinned sardines are probably the best to feed as they contain little bones that small doggies can cope with. In reference to bones. Dogs need bones that they eat both the meat off the bone and the actual bone. If the bone is to hard they damage their teeth and are unable to eat any of it putting the calcium (bone) to phosphorus (meat) levels all out of whack. It is usually reccomended that you don't feed weighbearing bones, because these are generally very hard. I myself have found that lamb ribs and necks are great as the pugs can chew and eat the whole bone.

Partially Torn Dew Claw

Book her in with the vets to have it removed. If you are unable to yank it out yourself and the vet is unable to then she probably will need to spend the day there to be sedated so they can remove it. If you don't remove it it will get infected, continue to get caught on things, and will never grow back properly. Just had one of my pug boys back toe nails removed as he caught in in the door and fractured one side of it. Of course it was to painful for myself, if I could have I would have yanked it out myself, or the vet just to yank out so he had to be sedated and stay at the vets for the day. $130 later he had had the most expensive manicure I have ever payed for. ETS: It was not a dew claw but a back toe nail that my puggy had to have removed. -
How are they dried? You should never feed cooked bones. What preservatives are added? Um why not just get fresh lambs necks. Much healthier for your dog. Pigs ears are full of fat and when they are moist can be swollowed whole so can be a chocking hazard. Fresh bones are a far better idea.

Can You Feed Tuna Instead Of Sardines?
puggy_puggy replied to ~Aimee~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Any fish that still contains bones are fine so that the ratio of calcium to phosphorus is maintained. Canned sardines are probably the easiest. You can also feed whole raw fish, still containing bones. -
How Do You Give Your Dog Tablets?

For my two puggies I use this method as well. I grab a bit of a slice of cheese squish the tablet in it. Give it to the pug whilst holding another bit of cheese in my hand. They are so eagar to finish the first bit of cheese, that contains the tablet, so that they can have the second bit that they don't even notice the tablet. Another puggy I had you could just shove the tablet down the back of their throat and hold thier mouth shut till they swallowed it. Another puggy thought that tablets, even massive big antibiotics, were treats and would eat them off my hand. -
If the drugs are human drugs, used for dogs as well, you can get your vet or specalist to write you out a script and then get you chemist to fill that script. Doing it this way always works out cheaper. If the drug is not a human drug then maybe you could ask your vet to find the human equvalant and again write out a script that you can take to your chemist. If thier is no human equivalant then buy in bulk from your vets or do a bit of googling and you may find an online store that you can buy from if you provide them with a prescription your vet has written up. I am almost certain that my vet doesn't charge a dispensing fee. If they do it would be something like $2 or less.

Your doggy might need to go under GA to have it's teeth cleaned if the vet says that bones aren't enough. As for food if you feed a BARF diet then you should only feed 2% to 3% of your dogs ideal weight a day. 80% being raw meaty bones and 20% being veggies, fruit, other meat, offal, and dairy. BARF FEEDING ROUTINE MONDAY Chicken Necks Slops TUESDAY Fish Slops WEDNESDAY Chicken Necks Yoghurt Slops THURSDAY Kangaroo Slops FRIDAY Chicken Necks Offal Slops SATURDAY Lamb bones Slops SUNDAY Beef or Lamb or Kangaroo or Pork Slops BARF MENU EXPLAINATION - * Raw Meaty Bones should make up approx 80% of your dogs diet with other meat, veggies, fruit, offal and dairy making up 20%. *Adult dogs should be fed approx 2% of their ideal body weight. So you would work out 2% of your dogs weight and then work out 80% of that for your RMB and 20% for veggies, offal etc. *Veggie Slops – 2 to 3 tablespoons each *Chicken necks – 3 to 4 per dog depending on the size of the necks. I cut up the chicken necks into bite sized pieces about the size of half your index finger. *Yoghurt (once a week) – 2 to 3 tablespoons each. Natural yoghurt *Offal (once a week) – lambs kidney, sheep’s kidney, tongue, brain etc. The equivalent of one or two lamb’s kidney for each dog cut up into small pieces. *Fish (once a week) – canned sardines, tuna etc (just make sure they have the bones in them) if they are lucky a piece of fresh fish each. *Bones (once or twice a week) - (vary between Lamb (ribs/lamb flaps, backbones) Beef & Kangaroo Tail) Some dogs can not stomach kangaroo as it is very rich. So see how they go with it and if they are unable to eat it then substitute it for another meat. Kangaroo I get from a pet produce store. Chicken necks from either a chicken shop or the supermarket. Offal from the butcher. Bones from the butcher. I will buy the meat, chicken necks, yoghurt and offal in large quantities and divide it up into separate meal portions and freeze. The night before that ingredient is to be eaten I will take the portion out of the freezer to defrost. Chicken necks, meat and offal I freeze in the snap lock freezer bags and the yoghurt in little tubs. Veggie slops I make up in big batches and freeze in Chinese takeaway food containers. BARF SLOPS INGREDIENTS & METHOD Things I always include: - container of alfala spouts - bunch of spinach (roots cut off) - 1 to 2 green capsicums (stalk cut off & seeds out) - 1 to 2 red caspsicums (stalk cut off & seeds removed) - bag of carrots - bunch of celary - 4 zuccinis - 3 to 4 oranges (peeled) - 1 pumpkin (seeds removed) - 2 to 4 apples (pips taken out) - 2 to 4 bannanas (peeled) - 8 to 10 eggs (whole including shell) - flaxseed oil (approx 250mL) - kelp (approx 100g) What else you can put in: - bunch of silverbeet - turnip - squash - sweet potato - 2 to 4 pears - half to 1 pinapple - brussel sprouts - brocoli - cauliflower - bag of beans - Apple Cider Vinegar - Vitamin C Chop up then process up in blender/food processor so that things turn to slops. Put each blender batch into a big bucket. Usually leave the eggs & flaxseed oil for things that don't blend very well like the pumpkin and carrots. Ingredients should fill up a bucket. Mix bucket with big ladel till all mixed through then put into take away containers & freeze untill needed.

Do you have any plants like wandering jew, or other irritating plants, in your garden that he can play in? What sort of food do you feed? Dry food? Dry food contains grains which is the cause of many skin irritations in dogs. Get him off all grains and onto a BARF and RAW diet. You can also give him human antihistamine tablets. Claratyne works best for my dogs, one a day, but you might have to try a few of them to get one that works well with him. For his eyes you could wash them out with a slightly warm tea bag. Wet the tea bag and place over his eye. I have used cammomile before but others use black tea or green tea.

Could be that he was trying to throw up something he couldn't digest. Also could be a gastro sort of but that has been going around. My boy had it, a few weeks ago, with his listless behaviour, occasional throwing up and runny poo lasting approx a week.

Underweight Chi Won't Eat
puggy_puggy replied to Domestic Dreamer's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Totally agree with you on this. No matter what is wrong with a pug you can cuddle it and they are comforted. But I have had one chi X as a foster who seriously would not be comforted whatever you did. She was absoultly heartbroken and pining someone or something. Every morning she would wake up by 5.45am and start to bark, cry and howl and do this for hours untill she wore herself out. She did this no matter if she was sleeping on my bed, sleeping on a dog bed, sleeping in a dark crate. And holding, cuddling and trying to comfort her didn't not do a thing. She would just go howling. By the end of two weeks of this I was driven nutty and ended up going to my vet to get some valium, after I had tried Rescue Remedy with no results, for her to take the edge off. -

Poor baby. Foods to try. Sardines & cooked chicken breast. Basically food that has a strong smell to it. Does he get fed at the same time as his mummy? ie is he he able to watch her eat and maybe in the long run copy her. I have been told that this method is sometime successful. When his owners prepare the dogs food have them do it with the animals watching. The owner is supposed to pretend to eat some of the food making sound like they love it and it is really yummy, some have a cracker that they can actually eat themselves. The owner then places the food, in the dog bowl, down for the dog to eat and immediatley turns their back on the dog, makes no eye contact. They continue to do this for 10 or so minutes, hopefull the dog has eaten by then, if it hasn't then the food is removed till next meal time. If the dog really isn't eating then maybe force feeding, by syringe might be required. Because this dogs obviously has massive mental problems I'm not sure it the benefit of getting the food into the dog would be outweighed by how much more scared he might get from having to hld him and use a syringe to slowly force food into his mouth. You squirt a bit in at a time and wait for them to swallow it and then do the next bit and so on. Sounds like this boy could really benefit from a natural herbal stress reliever like Bach Flowers or if that doesn't work then a low doseage of valium, or something similar, to break the cycle of fear he is obviously going through. -
Dog Who Loves Anything Sweet

I have heard of lots of dogs eating lipbalm. Mine will go crazy, and try to lick it off, if I put moisturizer on. -

I hope she was a little dog for the sake of your friends. -
Not sure about the cough. Could be heart failure. Could be chronic inflamation of the lungs & airways from some sort of irritant. How much food do you feed your cat now? Do you feed a totally raw diet? If you do feed a totally raw diet then you most likely are over feeding him. In healthy adult dogs you only feed 2 to 3% of their ideal body weight a day. I am not sure about cats, you might have to do a bit of research, but it is most likely the same.

;) I yell at my dad for chucking food all the time. He yells back at me. I hate to think what he wold do if I squirted him.

Um ... My Bitches Bits Look Diffrent ?
puggy_puggy replied to MonSqueek's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Can't see the offending part that well in the photo but it does look red and puffy. Most likely a bit of an infection that has formed because that area has creases in it so doesn't dry well so provides a perfect environment for bacteria to live in. How often do you bath her? Do you give that area good going over? Every now and again I will have a close inspection, a bit of a poke, pull and prod, of my girls bits. In this case I would be going to the vets to get some antibacterial cream/ointment. They might even prescibe some antibiotics. -

What Do You Think Of Colouring /dying Dogs
puggy_puggy replied to roxyporsha's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Haven't done it but saw photos of a puggy that had had it's tail coloured and thought it was cute. Have considered it but because the colour is supposed to last such a long time don't think I would do it to my puggies. I couldn't vote. You have to fix your poll so that you don't have to fill out both owners and groomers sections. -
Washing Dogs (can It Be Too Often)
puggy_puggy replied to ClareL's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My pugs, and any others that are here, get washed weekly. The longest they go is two weeks without a bath, but that is very rare. -
Glad to hear that your girls are fine. Personally I think that dogs having a little lick at wounds can do no harm but if you feel they are licking to much there is a gel sort of ointment you can apply, around the incision sight, that deters licking.
-
Thinking about it a bit more. Does your dog only do the crazy behaviour to yourself or does he do it to others as well when he thinks they have food? My pugs will literally have tantrums when they know that my dad has food or is making food. They cry and run around like maniacs whilst he is making it and prop in front of him because the know he will always chuck them something, they know he is the sucker. They don't exhibit this behaviour to either myself when I have food that I am eating or anyone else. So maybe your dog has learnt this behaviour.

Mmm strange. I wouldn't think that they were to soft for them as soft bones from non weight bearing areas are the recommended ones to feed as dogs can actually chew off bits of the bone and eat it. It's the hard bones, weightbearing, ones that aren't that good as they wear down dogs teeth to much and the dog can only really eat the meat off them and not the bone which doesn't make for a good ratio of bone to meat. Do they do this with any other bone? Could be that your dogs are sensitive to kangaroo meat as it is very rich. Some dogs are.
