  1. If you handle the meat properly, like you would any meat you were to consume yourself, salmonella poisoning should not be a factor. Get the dog mince home, divide it up into portions, freeze it, defrost in in the fridge on the day you wish to feed it. Cut the chicken necks up into pieces that are a bit smaller then half your index finger. I do this even for my adult pugs and they still have a few chews on each piece before swollowing. You really should get yourself a few books on the subject of BARF/RAW feeding. As I said before you actually have to understand the principle behind raw feeding before you actuall start doing so. And if you read up on raw/barf feeding you would realise that salmonella poisoning isn't an issue. http://www.barfaustralia.com/the_books.php?pid=1 http://www.barfaustralia.com/the_books.php?pid=3 http://www.barfaustralia.com/the_books.php?pid=2 http://www.ozdynamics.com/nmShop/intro_cat...amp;MemberId=68 http://www.claremiddle.com/book.htm http://www.claremiddle.com/docs/Real%20food%20flyer2.pdf
  2. Nooooo don't cook pet mince as it has bones in it. Most pet mince sold is minced chicken carcusses. Bones should never be cooked!!!!! So stop cooking it now! Your dog will eat it raw. Dogs should be fed raw food. Raw mince, raw veggies, raw meat, raw fish ( I think you get my point) If you are wanting to feed a raw diet or even a partially raw diet please please do some reading of books on BARF and RAW diets as a lot of mistakes can be made if you just chuck your dog a bit of this and a bit of that. You actually have to know what you are doing if you are going to feed a totally natural diet. ie in what to feed, how to feed and how much to feed.
  3. My girl puggy was a singleton. She was fed with an eyedropped because her mother actually rejected her. So yes she was a lot of work for her breeder. She had soft toys to act as litter mates and was socalised with the older dogs from an early age and has turned out just fine.
  4. Not a fan. Full of fat and preservatives. Feed fresh meat and veggies like youa re currently doing. You might want to give her some sardines once a week and even some kangaroo if you are wanting some variety.
  5. Looks like an irritation that has gone wrong. How long has it been there? Have you been bathing it in salty water or something like Physohex? Or putting any cream on it? If it's been there for quiet a while it would be something I would get the the vet to check out and do fine needle biopsy on ro make sure it isn't something nasty that is growing.
  6. Minced chicken carcusses has exaclty the right proportion of bone to meat. I have only used to to feed puppies that I don't trust with chicken necks. With the puppies I would also add to the minced chicken carcusses some veggie & fruit slops (BARF veggie slops) and yoghurt and once a week some sardines, and offal.
  7. Yep apparentley the Frosty Paws BARF patties have been around in WA for a while. But kowing the VIP have lots of presevatives in their other pet food I probably wouldn't trust this stuff either.
  8. Found a chewed up package of blood pressure pills that one of my foster puggies had managed to swipe from my bedside table. Sent my blood pressure even more sky high untill I accounted for all the pills.
  9. Mmm you are in for three weeks of bleeding if she just started. Might be useful to get some doggy pants and put pads in them to keep your furniture clean. You just take them off every time they go outside. If the vet thinks it would be ok to spay her at this age they will at least wait 3 weeks or so after she has come off heat so that all of the swelling can go down. If they desex whilst a dog is on heat or just come off heat things are still swollen and it makes it a much harder and more traumatic operation. What breed of doggy is she?
  10. At 16 weeks after they have had their 3rd puppy needle is when you can start taking them out. You can start socalising them with dogs you know the vaccination history of at 12 weeks after they have had their 2nd puppy needle. They generally have a needle at 7 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks.
  11. Um is the photo upside down? Looks pretty ok to me for a 12 year old bitch. Just looks like the skin has pigmentation. If she is coming on heat then they are probably swollen and if you get a tissue and wipe the area you will soon be able to tell if she is coming on heat or not.
  12. Digestive enzyme missing maybe. I am pretty sure they can do a test for this and then you can get the digestive enzyme capsules that you put on their food, from the health food shop. What would the xrays be for? Hernia?
  13. Pugs can live to 14 so she has a few years ahead of her. 1. Get her back checked out again. Panting can be a sign of pain so maybe she still is in pain from her back. 2. Get the weight off her. Pugs should have a clearly defined waist on them. If she was on a BARF/RAW food diet I would say only one or two chicken necks a day and vegtables but because your parents feed dried then feed only 1/4 of a cup of the dried food and the rest in vegtables. Take her for very short walks. if getting the weight off her doesn't seem to have helped 2. Check that she doesn't have an Elongated Soft Palate or that her trachea isn't collapsing. She would have to be sedated for them to check these things out.
  14. This link has the info you need.... http://www.bccq.org.au/pete/index.php?opti...5&Itemid=32
  15. If they don't eat what is in front of them within 10 to 15 minutes take it away from them and present it at their next meal time. They will soon learn. If you are feeding puppy mince (minced chicken carcusses) then add veggie/fruit slops and even some yoghurt to that as well. This is what I recently raise two pug rescue pups on from the age of 7 weeks to 5 months. ---------------------------------------------------------------- PUG PUPPY BARF DIET • Currently being feed approximately 10% of their body weight, 80% of which should be Raw Meaty Bones and 20% vegies, offal & dairy, divided up into 3 meals a day. As they get older this should be cut back with them getting fed 2% to 3% of their body weight in either two or one meal a day when they are adults. If you see that they are getting to fat then cut the percentage back. • Breakfast & Dinner - consist of Puppy mince/minced chicken carcasses, Barf veggie slops & full fat yoghurt. I will prepare a bowl of it in the morning mixing together the mince, veggie slops and yoghurt. Lunch -consists of a raw meaty lamb bone. • Twice a week I have been adding sardines to their food & once a week offal. You could add other things like kangaroo & beef from time to time but it is important that the bone to meat ratio remains ok. • Lennard’s sells the Puppy mince/ chicken mince which they have been fed on. It is made up of minced chicken carcasses. If you have to source the mince from somewhere else make sure it contains meat as well as the minced bones. It is important that dogs when dogs are fed meat (phosphorus) that they also have the right ratio of bone (calcium) with it to balance out nutritional needs. If dogs are fed meat without bones then serious health problems can occur. • Lamb bones are the best for them as they are soft enough for them to eat the whole bone which is important. Other bones that can be feed are the ones from non weight bearing parts of the body. Weight bearing bones are often to hard for dogs to actually consume both the bone and the meat throwing the phosphorus/ calcium ratio all out of whack and ruining dogs teeth in the process. ------------------------------- BARF SLOPS INGREDIENTS & METHOD Things I always include: - container of alfala spouts - bunch of spinach (roots cut off) - 1 to 2 green capsicums (stalk cut off & seeds out) - 1 to 2 red caspsicums (stalk cut off & seeds removed) - bag of carrots - bunch of celary - 4 zuccinis - 3 to 4 oranges (peeled) - 1 pumpkin (seeds removed) - 2 to 4 apples (pips taken out) - 2 to 4 bannanas (peeled) - 8 to 10 eggs (whole including shell) - flaxseed oil (approx 250mL) - kelp (approx 100g) What else you can put in: - bunch of silverbeet - turnip - squash - sweet potato - 2 to 4 pears - half to 1 pinapple - brussel sprouts - brocoli - cauliflower - bag of beans - Apple Cider Vinegar - Vitamin C Chop up then process up in blender/food processor so that things turn to slops. Put each blender batch into a big bucket. Usually leave the eggs & flaxseed oil for things that don't blend very well like the pumpkin and carrots. Ingredients should fill up a bucket. Mix bucket with big ladel till all mixed through then put into take away containers & freeze untill needed.
  16. Walk him before you go to work. Get another dog for him. Does he have lots of toys outside to keep him busy?
  17. The Rice, Wheat, Wheat Germ, Flour are all something I wouldn't feed to my dogs as they are grains therefor not something a dog would normally eat. They are really a waste of food as a dogs body doesn't process that kind of carbs properly. Grains also cause alot of skin problems in dogs. The Tallow I wouldn't be feeding either as it's not fat in it's natural state. If I was to feed fat I would much rather chuck a dog some fat off a fresh piece of meat.
  18. If youa re talking about the minced chicken carcusses then if you have a Lenards (chicken shop) near you most of them wil sell it but you will have to ask for it as it is out the back.
  19. Another vote for cleaning it with warm salty water. I feel slightly ill Would it make you feel better if I mentioned that generally it's the dog licking itself that makes the problem flare up? Ewww stop it.
  20. My guys get... In terms of boney things: Chicken necks Lamb flaps Lamb backbones sardines tuna In terms of other meat and offal.... kangaroo beef pork lambs kidney lambs liver ox kidney Kangaroo tails can be bought at animal produce stores.
  21. There's been a bug going around. Throwing up, runny poo, not interested in treats, listless. Take about a week to get over. Sounds like your fur kids could have it.
  22. Would avoid these aswell if they are the dried variety. Same process and chemicals would be used to dry them as the pigs ears and raw hides.
