It's not going to heal unless youc an stop him licking and irritating it. Dogs usually cope very well with elizabethan collars it's us owners that hate being bashed up the shins with them.

Dry Food To Raw-how Much?
puggy_puggy replied to menacebear's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes 2% is debatable but it's somewhere to start with an adult dog. If you see the dog is losing weight you up the percentage and if you see the dog is gaining weight you lower the percentage. Yes some say that veggies and dairy aren't required but some say they are. I personally feed them for good measure. -
One Year Old Dog Incontinent/leaking
puggy_puggy replied to Laura81's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am thinking UTI as well. Perhaps some doggy undies could be usefull till you can get the problem under control. -
I would suggest an elizabethan collar on his head to break the licking cycle and give th sore a chance to heal. Bath it in warm salty water and dry. If it is really wet and weepy then curash powder (baby nappy rash powder from the chemist or supermarket). If it's not that wet then curash ointment.

3 meals a day untill she is older. Personally I would get rid of the rice and pasta as it's not a natural thing for dogs to eat. I wouldn't feed dry either but that's peoples choice. You might like to try some small lambs bones with her as well. Cut the dry back to 1/3 of what they reccomend as daily intake on the packet. With the chicken necks and mince & veggies weigh her and work out 10% of her body weight then feed 2/3rds of this 10%. ie if you were feeding a full BARF diet then you would weigh a pup work out 10% of it's body weight and feed this divided up into 3 seperate meals but as you are only feeding two meals of it you only feed 2/3rds of the 10%.

Dry Food To Raw-how Much?
puggy_puggy replied to menacebear's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If you feed a RAW/BARF diet then it should be approx 2% of your dogs ideal body weight per day. Chicken mince and frozen veggies is not a suitable diet at all. You should have approx 80% Raw meaty bones and 20% veggies, muscle meat, offal & dairy Google up and do some reading. BARF Feeding Suggestion for larger dogs.... MONDAY AM - Chicken Necks/wings/carcuss PM - Beef & Slops TUESDAY AM - Kangaroo Tail PM - Fish & Slops WEDNESDAY AM - Chicken Necks/wings/carcuss PM - Dog mince (minced chicken carcuss) & Yoghurt & Slops THURSDAY AM - Lamb bone PM - Kangaroo & Slops FRIDAY AM - Chicken Necks/wings/carcuss PM - Dog mince (minced chicken carcuss) & Slops SATURDAY AM - Lamb bone PM- Fish & Slops SUNDAY AM - Kangaroo Tail PM - Dog mince (minced chicken carcuss) & Slops BARF SLOPS INGREDIENTS & METHOD Things I always include: - container of alfala spouts - bunch of spinach (roots cut off) - bag of carrots - bunch of celary - 4 zuccinis - 3 to 4 oranges (peeled) - 1 pumpkin - 2 to 4 apples (pips taken out) - 2 to 4 bannanas (peeled) - 8 to 10 eggs (whole including shell) - flaxseed oil (approx 250mL) - kelp (approx 100g) What else you can put in: - bunch of silverbeet - turnip - squash - sweet potato - 2 to 4 pears - half to 1 pinapple - brussel sprouts - brocoli - cauliflower - bag of beans - Apple Cider Vinegar - Vitamin C - 1 to 2 green capsicums (stalk cut off & seeds out) - 1 to 2 red caspsicums (stalk cut off & seeds removed) Chop up then process up in blender/food processor so that things turn to slops. Put each blender batch into a big bucket. Usually leave the eggs & flaxseed oil for things that don't blend very well like the pumpkin and carrots. Ingredients should fill up a bucket. Mix bucket with big ladel till all mixed through then put into take away containers & freeze untill needed. -
Have never and would never use it on the pugs. I have heard to many bad stories. And if you think logically about it how could pumping into a dog with enough chemicals to last a full year be healthy? No wonder they have reactions.

One symptom of mange is they lose hair from around their eye area. Any photos of his face? Have you removed all grains from his food?

Dry Eye In Cav And Desexing Question
puggy_puggy replied to Mushaka's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Desexing her straight away is fine. I have had rescues come in one day and the next day I have had them down at the vet being desexed. Even though it is your mum that is adopting the dog wouldn't you be breaking an ethical code of rescue of always to desex before rehoming, if you don't desex straight away? As for the dry eye ask your vet if a medial eye closure could possibly help (making the eyes a little smaller so the tears don't have so much work to do) Does she have any pigmentary kerititis? -
Broken Toe & Dodgy Elbows...what Next?
puggy_puggy replied to woody2shoes's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Poor girl. It's only a thought but sounds like her bones might be brittle, or something to that accord, with her both breaking her toe and having dodgey elbows. What sort of food do you feed? Maybe it is worth changing. Has the vet suggested any supplements? I am thinking that it might be a good idea to get her onto something like glucosamine. -
Rosie get rid of her plastic bowl and replace it with a metal one. Some dogs can be allergic to plastic. If she is 5kg then give her half a Claratyne a day for the next week and a bit. My ex foster pug pup is under 5kg in weight and is on half a Claratyne a day, oked with the vet, and it has cleared up her problems. Claratyne is one of the safest antihistamines as it doesn't transfer into the CNS. Try the Claratyne first. Um your vet is seriously out of date when it comes to things. Many drugs given to animals are actually human drugs. Many vets prescribe antihistamines and also suggest to people to go to the chemist to get the human ones. What exactly does your vet suggest then?

Poor baby. Maybe you should invest in some doggy shoes for him.

Infection On My 6-month Old Lab's Lady Bits
puggy_puggy replied to LoremIpsum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Actually that rings a bell. One of my foster pug puppies actually had a bit of an irritation near her vulva that the vet said was something, I can't remember, and usually fades away as they get older. And he was right it did go away as she grew. -
Sores On Hocks After Ball Chasing
puggy_puggy replied to Leema's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
There are both carpal and hock wraps that are designed to give support for injuries. Not sure how much use they would be as they usually have openings that the hock fits through. -
Infection On My 6-month Old Lab's Lady Bits

Could it be that the area was moist all the time and became infected? -
How much does she weigh? Either 1/2 to 1 Claratyne (human stuff) tablet a day. Does she eat out of a plastic bowl? Funny that she rubs her face after eating. If it's not the bowl then it's very likely to be the grains in the royal canine kibble. As well as the antihistamine I would get her off all grains and feed a totally RAW/BARF diet.

Does Twisted Stomach = Gastric Torsion ?
puggy_puggy replied to Purple Julie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Bloat occurs then the stomach can twist (gastric torsion). I believe there are some breeds that are more prone to both bloat then the twisted stomach then others. I believe there is a bloat kit that contains a needle you plunge into the stomach, through the skin, to relieve pressure. Probably a good idea for people with bloat prone breeds to have one handy. A preventative to stop the stomach twisting is to actually attach part of it to the chest wall so it can't flip. -
Change to sardines. Make sure you food process the veggies.
-
Wondering if a warm or maybe cold compress on the area could help as well.
-
Could be not fleas at all. Maybe try her on some antihistamines for a week and see if this improves things. Dry food and grains can also cause skin irritations in dogs.
-
It's supposed to be approx 80% RMB. 50% is way to low. To much meat and not enough bone causes growth problems. Don't steam your veggies instead put them through a food processor and serve raw. Put the eggs, including shell, in with the veggies. Personally I wouldn't be feeding offal more then twice a week.
-
Yep along those terms. If the ball and socket don't seem to be abnormal then I would think that you would have less worry about it happening again. Only problem would be that now the tendons & muscles surrounding it have been stretched that's probably why when they are popping it back in it wont stay. I am guessing that they have her on some anti inflams in the drip to relax the muscles and tendons.

Why are you feeding suasages anyway? Full of fat. As for bones could be that he wants you to guard him whilst he is eating his bone. My female pug will not eat her bones unless I sit outside with her and guard her from my male pug. If I get up and move she will walk around with the bone in her mouth crying untill I sit down again. I always observe when the pugs have bones so they don't choke and so they don't fight over them. So maybe go and get some half lambs ribs (lambs flaps) and give one to your dog and sit there with him.
