Have you tried Capstar? You use this as well as the Frontline/Revolution/SS Have you flea bombed your house/garden/under your house? Treated your car? Washed all washable human and dog bedding? You could also try some antihistamine, like Claratyne, for the irritation.

Maybe the vet should have cut the sheath a little as well?

What exactly is it? A mange of some sort or just dry skin? Maybe you could try paw paw ointment if it's dry skin or curashif it's a sore sort of thing.

Poor poppet. I would say to pull the scab off was the best thing to do as well. Emptying the glands would probably gelp remove any infectious gunk that was in there as well. And yes I have had pugs scream when they have had their glands emptied. Since changing to a BARf diet they haven't needed to be done.

Worms / Maggots Found In Lenards Chicken
puggy_puggy replied to Jessca's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yummy. The puggies get Lenards chicken necks and I have a few Lenards Chicken Kievs in the fridge. Wonder if mine has extra flavouring. -
You should give your dog bones that are soft enough for him to fully consume otherwise your dogs diet will be out of whack. Your dog needs both the calcium (bone) and phosperous (meat) in the right proportions. If your dog is only consuming the meat off the bone then he is not getting a balanced ratio. Non weight bearing bones are best as they are softer then weighbearing. Lamb is a good option. I feed mainly lamb flaps, and yes the whole rib is consumed, but some dogs find these to fatty.

I've looked after 3 bitches in season, all of them rescues that I was fostering at the time, with the last one being a few months back. I know they don't stream blood but they do drip every now and again. And those drips get on furniture and the floor which is something that maybe breeders are not phased by but I would have thought that pet owners might be. Do you have your bitches in season wondering your house like a they might do in a pet home? Is there any studies on what the side effects of so called 'destroying hormones forever' has? Apart from possibly stunting/changing growth if a canine is desexed before it is 'physically mature' what effects does desexing have on canines desexed afterwards? As for taking enough care to prevent unwanted litters I am sure that even you know of breeders, who are the ones that you would expect to take the most care, having unplanned litters occur. If this occurs in the breeders world then how can you be sure that 'Joe Blogs normal pet owner' can prevent unplanned litters. Afterall the pounds are full of them.

I sort of guessed it would take a few weeks to settle down because of swelling but it's good to get it confirmed.

Elimination Diet (for Allergies)
puggy_puggy replied to sandgrubber's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I to did the elimation diet with Hills ZD for 2 months with my male pug a few years back. Did absolutly nothing for him as well. Basically it was a load of crap. Looking back I find it sad now that vets have not educated themselves enough and think outside the world of dry processed food and cortisone. -
Increase veggie (fibre) intake. I was only thinking about this matter the other day. I used to have to get the pugs glands squeezed twice a year or more and they would be leaving stinky deposits on things probably once a month or so before I changed their diet completely over to BARF feeding. They have been on a full BARF diet for a year now and I could swear they have had no anal gland problems and left no stinky deposits this year. BARF SLOPS INGREDIENTS & METHOD Things I always include: - container of alfala spouts - bunch of spinach (roots cut off) - bag of carrots - bunch of celary - 4 zuccinis - 3 to 4 oranges (peeled) - 1 pumpkin - 2 to 4 apples (pips taken out) - 2 to 4 bannanas (peeled) - 8 to 10 eggs (whole including shell) - flaxseed oil (approx 250mL) - kelp (approx 100g) What else you can put in: - 1 to 2 green capsicums (stalk cut off & seeds out) - 1 to 2 red caspsicums (stalk cut off & seeds removed) - bunch of silverbeet - turnip - squash - sweet potato - 2 to 4 pears - half to 1 pinapple - brussel sprouts - brocoli - cauliflower - bag of beans - Apple Cider Vinegar - Vitamin C Chop up then process up in blender/food processor so that things turn to slops. Put each blender batch into a big bucket. Usually leave the eggs & flaxseed oil for things that don't blend very well like the pumpkin and carrots. Ingredients should fill up a bucket. Mix bucket with big ladel till all mixed through then put into take away containers & freeze untill needed.

Why is it that they do not want to get her desexed? Why would you want a dog dripping blood for 3 weeks at least twice a year if it didn't have to. Obviously this dog doesn't live inside. Why would you want to risk that dog having an unwanted litter if you didn't have to? Sometimes I don't understand people. If they are worried about the dog not coping with the operations. I have had many bitches desexed, of varying ages, and they have all coped just fine with the operation. They have been back to normal the next day after thye have slept off the general anasthetic. Maybe tell them that if she gets stolen or lost then if she isn't desexed she could be used as a puppy making factory for the rest of her life. At least if she is desexed you don't have to worry about her being abused in that way.

If your feding a BARF diet then for an adult dog approx 2% of their ideal weight per day. Meats you can feed are really anything. Kangaroo, chicken, beef, lamb, duck, rabbit, fish, you name it. Is the chicken mince you feed actually minced chicken carcusses?

Thanks Clyde. How long should I keep up with the soft foods for? How long do you think it will take for the full effect of the throat surgery to occur? She still is huffing and puffing when she gets worked up. But I think that it isn't as bad as before. The vet actually showed me the tissues that he cut out. This is the first pug that I have had that I have thought something needs to be done about it's breathing. We have no history on her as she was rescued from a pound, would have been killed because no one claimed her.

Thankyou Rappie. She came home last night and did have Soft Pallet and laryngeal saccule resections as well as desexing and is doing great. She is a little trouper and one of the fastest to bounce back from GA that I have had. Amazing seeing she would have been under for a fair bit longer for both the desexing and throat to be done. She is on Prednisolone, obviously to stop any excess swelling in the throat, and the Clavulox. I got a bit mixed up thinking Clavulox were chunky white tablets, they are only little pink ones. She was given Dexafort and Moxylan injections. Her breathing is still a little noisey but I suspect her throat is swollen.

Pretty sure it's a condition called 'Premature closure of the distal ulnar physis (radius curvus)' where the ulner stops growing because a growth plate closes early and the radius continues to grow. This causes the bowing effect you see. Not really much you can do other then operate which will set you back about $2,000 to $2,500, per leg. The operation is supposed to be very successful.

Good news. Vibes for him to continue to improve.

I have a foster puggy that is undergoing Soft Pallet Reduction and most likely laryngeal saccule removal/reduction. She is also being desexed. Question to those that have had dogs undergo Soft Pallet surgery is do they prescribe pain killers and antibiotics to take home afterwards? On the quote sheet the vet has given me they have listed Rimadyl Chewables and Clavulox. Now I am thinking that a dog that has had surgery to it's throat could in no way swallow the Rimadyl let alone the bit chunky tablets that Clavulox are. Would these have been prescribed for the desexing? I know he has tried to prescribe both drugs to other dogs I have had desexed but I have declined. I don't feel that dogs need take home painkillers or antibiotics after desexing but as I have never had a dog undergo throat surgery I don't know if they are needed. Wouldn't a liquid painkiller be more suitable if she needs it?

Sneezing And Had A Tick On Her Muzzle
puggy_puggy replied to Gerda the Schnauzer's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
God so glad that I don't live in a tick area. Bath the sore with warm salty water and put some betadine on it. -
Was it a particularily traumatic desexing? I have only given Rimadyl once to a bitch after desexing because she had just come off heat so the operation was a bit more traumatic then usual. All of the other bitches I have had spayed, and the males I have had nutered, I haven't given any extra pain killers to. They actually get two pretty long lasting pain killing injections whilst at the vets. One either before the start cutting or after they have stitched them up and one just before they bring them out to you to take home.

Spaying - When Is The Best Time To Do It?
puggy_puggy replied to Golden Rules's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
For me the supposed side effects of desexing when they are still young, ie around 6 months, are far out weighed by the risk of waiting. And I don't believe that dogs that are pet only should be kept entire. It is said that if you desex before the mature you will get a taller ganglier dog. From looking at my two pugs my taller ganglier one is my male that I actually didn't get desexed untill he was nearly two and my little tank girl was done when she was 6 months. I don't know the exact stats but it I think it is something like 99% of bitches spayed before their first season will not get mamary cancer. I'm not sure what the percentage of mamary cancer in unspayed bitches is. If you desex you don't have to ever worry about your bitch being stolen to be used as a puppy making factory. Accidents do happen no matter how carefull you try to be. Having to put change pads and put doggy undies on and off your bitch every times she goes in or outside is a bloody pain. -
Ohh fantastic news.

If you feed dry food or any type of processed food at all I would get him off it and onto a BARF or RAW diet that contains no grains at all. Last time was it actually diagnosed as mange? Does he have a smell?
-
I don't feed dry food but by the looks of things his diet seems fine. I wouldn't be adding supplements just making sure the dry food is a good one. Maybe ask in the Dane or Mastiff specific subforums what dry food others feed. Fish at least once a week is good. I would be still feeding him 3 times a day if he is 4 months old. Probably would cut back to two meals a day at 7 months. As cassie said may breeds of pups go through a lanky stage where they look all gangly. It's not untill they are mature that they fill out. Maybe you could ask in the Dane or Mastiff subforum about this as well.

For the pads people have suggested paw paw ointment. I suppose you could put the paw paw on liberally and get a small freezer bag and place over the top and put a bandage over the top to keep it on for a few hours. Otherwise he would probably just rub the ointment off whne he walked. I would be inclined not to put anything on a surgical wound. Just make sure it is dry and clean.
