Personally I wouldn't feed oats. Not needed.

Gypsyrose you didn't tell us if you had used any products that actually kill mange mites. I know that Revolution does. As for the Anthistamine - 1 claratyne a day for With the diet start by cutting out all grains and any processed treats such as smachos & even pigs ears.

Um you are way off. Should be more likely 80% raw meaty bones and 20% fruit, veggies, offal, dairy. Please please read and research more as feeding a bad raw diet is worse then feeding processed food. http://www.barfaustralia.com/ http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm

Fence the garden beds off with temporary fencing. Either the plastic latice type stuff or chicken wire sort of stuff.

The hairloss around the eyes really does sounds like mange. I beleve that sometimes vets can not pick up the mites under the microscope if they do not scrape a deep enough sample. Have you treated her with a product like Revolution that actually kills the mites? Another reason could be what you feed her. Exaclty what food do you feed? Many dogs are allergic to grains that are contained in many dry foods. By changing a dog onto a diet that does not include any grains at all (rice, wheat, oats etc) a large number of dogs have massive improvements in their skin issues. I notice in your photo that your dog seems to be swimming in a dam or river. Sometimes dogs can get irritated by dirty/muddy water. Have you noticed that she is worse after she has been swimming? Have you checked your yard for irritating plants such as Wondering Dew? What has your vet prescribed to help your girl? Instead of cortisones you can try human antihistamines. I have found Claratyne to be effective on my dogs and other that I have looked after and would give 1 a day to your girl for at least a week and see if there is any improvement. Sometimes one particular antihistamine works better then another depending on the dog so you might have to try a few to find the right one. Lastly what do you bath her in? Many people have found that Evening Primrose Oil Shampoo from Groomers Choice has helped their itchie doggies. http://www.groomersproducts.com.au/groomersproducts.htm

Get rid of the puppy pads they are confusing him. Take him outside constantly, every hour or so, after playing, sleeping, eating etc. Tell him to 'go to the toilet. go to the toilet' Reward him with a treat and make a big fuss when he does. Is your front yard fenced or do you have to put a lead on him when you go outside? Is it a communal front yard or only yours? If its only yours invest in some puppy pens and set up a small area right outside your front door so that when you open your dog he can go outside safely. For when you can not supervise him restrict the area that he has access to with barriers or puppy pen him.

You state yourself rish that the place you got your dogs from just bred their dogs over and over again. How is this a good thing? Backyard Breeders are sually a scaled down version of Puppy Farmers. They have no interest in the dog other then to make money out of puppies. They do no genetic testing, breed dogs that are not good examples of the breed or research which dogs would be best to mate together. All they do is put two dogs together and hope for puppies they can sell at high prices. http://www.trahernbt.com/puppiesfromabackyard.html http://www.petrescue.com.au/article/592 http://www.dog-e-data.com.au/saynotobackyardbreeders.asp What is wrong with your dogs that they are on tablets everyday?

I feed veggies and fruit just because I think it can't harm them and if they are absorbing the nutrition from it then it is helping to give them a balanced diet. I would be very interested if a study was done analysing faeces and urine of dogs that are given veggies and fruit that are pulped to see if they are actually processing and using it in their bodies. This could be compared to dogs that eat veggies and fruit that aren't pulped and dogs the just eat meat and bones.

Have always known vets to do surgery around lunch time to early afternoon. They consult either side of surgery. I have used a few vets over the time and all speys and castrations have come home on the same day. Just had a little puggies girl hernia repaired yesterday. Picked her up and yes she was groggy but after a nights sleep she is back to normal.

BARF SLOPS INGREDIENTS & METHOD Things I always include: - container of alfala spouts - bunch of spinach (roots cut off) - bag of carrots - bunch of celary - 4 zuccinis - 3 to 4 oranges (peeled) - 1 pumpkin - 2 to 4 apples (pips taken out) - 2 to 4 bannanas (peeled) - bunch of silverbeat - 4 oranges - 8 to 10 eggs (whole including shell) - flaxseed oil (approx 250mL) (some people choose to not include this and add to the food daily) - kelp (approx 100g) What else you can put in: - 1 to 2 green capsicums (stalk cut off & seeds out) - 1 to 2 red caspsicums (stalk cut off & seeds removed) - turnip - squash - 2 to 4 pears - half to 1 pinapple - brussel sprouts - brocoli - cauliflower - bag of beans - Apple Cider Vinegar - Vitamin C Chop up then process up in blender/food processor so that things turn to slops. Put each blender batch into a big bucket. Usually leave the eggs & flaxseed oil for things that don't blend very well like the pumpkin and carrots. Ingredients should fill up a bucket. Mix bucket with big ladel till all mixed through then put into take away containers & freeze untill needed.

Unless a puppy was bred by a registered breeder and has pedigree papers from their states canine council you can never really tell if it is a pedigree. Sounds like you are pleased you bought your dogs from backyard breeders or puppy farmers.

How Do You Know If Anti-inflam's Are Causing Probs?
puggy_puggy replied to rugerfly's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
As Rappie said. Throwing up, lack of appetite, runny poo. I thought that any dog that is on a long term, well longer then a few weeks, anti inflamitory drugs was blood tested every now and again (not sure how often) to make sure that nasty things were not happening. -
OMG $400 for a small dog. That is very very expensive. I would expect a small male to cost under $250. Even under $200. I would be looking elsewhere. And no dogs do not have to stay overnight. I have had many many pugs desexed and have never had any of them stay overnight. Sounds like your vet is trying to overservice.

Keep him crated for the next few days no matter how much he seems to have improved.

KC symptoms can vary greatly. Whilst some dogs will only get a runny nose, others will get snotty noses and then others will get the full blown KC with the snotty noses & coughing. If your dog is 'goose honking' (backwards snorting) put your fingers in thier mouth to make them breath through their mouth instead of their nose. Unless they are really sick then a vet can't really do anything for them. If they are really sick then antibiotics may be prescribed.

Bone Suggestions For Older Dog
puggy_puggy replied to moosepup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Lamb ribs (flaps). If your dog can't chew very well make sure you get the ones that don't have the sternum (breast bone) still attached as that bit is much harder then the actual ribs. Alternatively you could cut the sternum off. -
Perhaps clipping that area of hair would help?

Chicken and rice is bland and easy on unsettled tummies. Would you rather they advise clients with dogs that need a bland diet till they recover that they feed them PAL. Sorry not talking about the chicken I am talking about the rice. Maybe do a little research into what grains can do to dogs. I do not have to research anything , I am trying to explain that SICK dogs need a very bland diet and Chicken and rice is bland and proven to be easy on a SICK dogs stomach. There is time to push the barf, prey model whatever diet onto people and isn't when they have a dog shitting through the eye of an needle with gastro. If you read the OP again it is asked if it is ok to feed Chicken & Rice as the main percentage of a normal diet. Anyways moving along now.
