  1. How reactive are the pupils? I would be thinking brain trauma or even tumour. Hope this is not the case.
  2. Yes some dogs do it as as a nasty habit but there is also a condition where the dog lacks a digestive enzyme, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. Another cause can be that the dog's diet doesn't have enough protein in it and to many carbs. Pineapple doesn't work.
  3. Could be that she is not digesting his food properly so when it comes out the other end it still is enticing. What do you feed? How is your dogs fur & weight?
  4. Now where is the fun in that. The pup annoys the shit out of the older dog. I have two pugs that are a nearly two years apart in age and they love eachother to death but are also rivals. The same goes for basically every other family of two or more pugs I know. I don't think that age is a factor. If you have more then one dog they are always going to be rivals.
  5. Do you know that this dog has a grass allergy for sure? How big is the dog? I use claratyne. I know alot of people say to use phenergan, which is an older style (first generation) antihistamine, which has the side effect of making whomever takes it a bit sleepy as it acts on the CNS. Personally I would choose a newer style of antihistamine (second generation) that do not enter the CNS and do not have the side effects of drowsiness. Claratyne is one of these but others included Zyrtec & Telfast.
  6. Just to go against the flow. If I was to get a puppy again I would get two at once. I fostered two female pug pups that came into rescue at 7 weeks. I had them for 3 months. Yes it was double the poo & wees and double the food preperation but seriously these girls were no problem at all. They had eachother to snuggle and play with, and boy did they play. The ended up being adopted together and are a year old now and I would say are very well rounded gorgouse little girls. Yes the bigger girl probably couldn't live without her smaller sister, or another dog, but saying that my younger pug couldn't live without her older brother so what is the difference?
  7. Not always, espcially with swf's. Hence the term "Maltese mouth". I know plenty of dogs who have a great diet and still get terrible teeth. A large percentage of my clients dogs have regular dentals as a good diet just doesn't cut it. My small dogs have always had good diets, but their teeth haven't always been brilliant. I used to brush my Saints teeth as quite a few certain teeth would get nasty build up. In regards to the gel, one of my clients used an oral gel and her dogs gums started bleeding and got very sore. If I remember I will find out the name of the product this week. She has used pretty much every product available with no success. Yes you can included pugs with the swf's. The make up of their mouths means that the scissoring action doesn't always mean the teeth self clean. I feed both of my pugs the same diet of bones and raw food. My male pugs teeth are fine whilst my female pug had to have teeth removed a year and a bit ago because of how little her mouth is, her teeth couldn't clean themselves.
  8. The pre op blood tests would bump up the price a bit. And I really don't think that an overnight stay is necessary. Is the vet insisting on this? Payed $392 for my female pugs major dental a year and a half ago. This included: Removing 5 teeth Clean pain injection antibiotic injection anasthesia half day hospitalisation
  9. What state are you in? People can let you know of vets that titer test in your state. The tests are sent to Gribbles.
  10. The pugs take a few hours to get through a roo tail. I wish the would come in halfs.
  11. Yep Sardines once are twice a week are a good idea. Evening Primrose Oil is a great shampoo for itchie dogs. http://www.groomersproducts.com.au/groomersproducts.htm Hav eyou given him anything to help the itchie?
  12. Switch back to the other food and see what happens. Malaseb most likely wont help him as it's for bacterial sort of things. I would be more inclined just to wash him with plain warm water if you think it might be the stuff the groomer has left on. Give him an antihistamine as well to help the itchies.
  13. Is it really deep or superficial? Paw Paw ointment might help. Perhaps give him something to distract froma ctually licking his nose like a bone or treat filled kong. Might be a good idea to keep him contained for the next few days so he can't eat crusty things and can't scrape it again. If you catch him pawing at it an elizabethan collar might be needed.
  14. Yes I would not be using shampoos such as Malaseb unless the dog has a skin problem already. They are strong and toxic. Is it only after baths that the dog has the bumps or does she have them all the time and you can't see them when the hair is not wet? Where are the bumps and rash?
  15. What the. Feeding a dog rice in an elimination diet. Grains cause a high percentage of skin problems. Get the dog off the rice, and any other grains, and onto a RAW or BARF diet. Here's an example. BARF FEEDING ROUTINE MONDAY Chicken Necks Slops TUESDAY Fish Slops WEDNESDAY Chicken Necks Yoghurt Slops THURSDAY Kangaroo Slops FRIDAY Chicken Necks Offal Slops SATURDAY Lamb bones Slops SUNDAY Beef or Lamb or Kangaroo or Pork Slops I feed only once a day with my adult pugs but others choose to feed twice a day. If you choose to feed twice a day you probably would do bones in the morning, chicken necks, wings carcasses lamb bones brisket bones and then some sort of muscle meat and the veggies slops in the evening. BARF SLOPS INGREDIENTS & METHOD Things I always include: - container of alfala spouts - bunch of spinach (roots cut off) - bag of carrots - bunch of celary - 4 zuccinis - 3 to 4 oranges (peeled) - 1 pumpkin - 2 to 4 apples (pips taken out) - 2 to 4 bannanas (peeled) - bunch of silverbeat - 4 oranges - 8 to 10 eggs (whole including shell) - flaxseed oil (approx 250mL) (some people choose to not include this and add to the food daily) - kelp (approx 100g) What else you can put in: - 1 to 2 green capsicums (stalk cut off & seeds out) - 1 to 2 red caspsicums (stalk cut off & seeds removed) - turnip - squash - 2 to 4 pears - half to 1 pinapple - brussel sprouts - brocoli - cauliflower - bag of beans - Apple Cider Vinegar - Vitamin C Chop up then process up in blender/food processor so that things turn to slops. Put each blender batch into a big bucket. Usually leave the eggs & flaxseed oil for things that don't blend very well like the pumpkin and carrots. Ingredients should fill up a bucket. Mix bucket with big ladel till all mixed through then put into take away containers & freeze untill needed.
  16. Haven't used it for months but when I was using it have never had a problem. I have heard of other treatments causing similar reactions to peoples dogs. Make sure you keep the packaging and report it to the supplier/manufacturer.
  17. I would possibly xray the offending leg whilst she is under being desexed.
  18. Um it takes me maye 2 hours every two months to do the veggie/fruit slops. It might take me an hour every month to package up the meats and bones. This is for two pugs. So I can't let you say that you don't have enough time to make your own BARF. I can understand the freezer space issues. Maybe Kevin Dudds handout can be put towards a freezer.
  19. $20 a day? How big is your dog? Can't you make your own BARF diet?
  20. The company that makes FP, VIP Pet Food, put presevatives in some of their other foods. Could be they do so for FP as well.
  21. Yes I have seen it happen in young dogs, both desexed and undesexed. Whilst I think that an enlarged prostate adds to it I just think it happens if a dog is straining to much.
  22. With respect, I have witnessed Vets diagnose this during a Spey, often coupled with polycystic ovaries and other abnormalities. Would you be able to explain how it causes bleeding? I was always of the understanding that the blood of a season comes from the uterus linings which obviously is no longer there in this case The uterus lining is made up of endometrial tissue. In endometriosis the uterus lining (endometrial tissue) is not only contained in the uterus but can be in other parts of the body. No mater where the endometrial tissue is it will still go through it's cycle or bleeding if it has hormones to activate it.
  23. I guess you have to decide if you want the vet to open her up and go looking for any missed reproductive tissue or you try her on contraception. I probably would try the surgery first, if she is a fit heatlhy dog. Isn't this for male dogs?
  24. In order for your bitch to bleed there would need to be remaining endometrial tissue. I would presume that your bitch has endometriosis with endometrial tissue that is either in the cervix or vagina. Otherwise where is the blood coming from? In order for a dog to come on heat hormones come into play. Yes maybe some of the ovarian tissue was left that may be causing it but I am wondering if the brain or some other part of the body is realeasing hormones that could trigger this as well.
