  1. As a trainee vet nurse you should know that animals have less pain receptors then humans. And in general cope much better with surgery then humans do. If we are specifically comparing a human total hysterectomy to a dogs then firstly in humans for cosmetic reasons we cut across the stomach muscles whereas in dogs we cut in between which is far less traumatic. Why pump your animals with unnecessary drugs if you don't have to?
  2. I feed once a day basically alternating with RMB and muscle meat. It all evens out at the end of the week. If I had larger dogs I would probably feed RMB like chicken necks/frames in the morning and then muscle meat & veggie slops in the evening. BARF FEEDING ROUTINE MONDAY Chicken Necks Slops TUESDAY Fish Slops WEDNESDAY Chicken Necks Yoghurt Slops THURSDAY Kangaroo Slops FRIDAY Chicken Necks Offal Slops SATURDAY Lamb bones Slops SUNDAY Beef or Lamb or Kangaroo or Pork Slops BARF SLOPS INGREDIENTS & METHOD Things I always include: - container of alfala spouts - bunch of spinach (roots cut off) - bag of carrots - bunch of celary - 4 zuccinis - 3 to 4 oranges (peeled) - 1 pumpkin - 2 to 4 apples (pips taken out) - 2 to 4 bannanas (peeled) - 8 to 10 eggs (whole including shell) - flaxseed oil (approx 250mL) - kelp (approx 100g) What else you can put in: - 1 to 2 green capsicums (stalk cut off & seeds out) - 1 to 2 red caspsicums (stalk cut off & seeds removed) - bunch of silverbeet - squash - sweet potato - 2 to 4 pears - half to 1 pinapple - brussel sprouts - brocoli - cauliflower - bag of beans - Apple Cider Vinegar - Vitamin C Chop up then process up in blender/food processor so that things turn to slops. Put each blender batch into a big bucket. Usually leave the eggs & flaxseed oil for things that don't blend very well like the pumpkin and carrots. Ingredients should fill up a bucket. Mix bucket with big ladel till all mixed through then put into take away containers & freeze untill needed.
  3. Dogs get a long lasting pain killer injection whilst at the vets. They do not need, get, any take home pain killers. In my experience of having many many many pugs desexed, at quite a few different vets, the only time take home pain killers were given was for a bitch that had just come off heat. Everyone of those pugs coped absolutley fine without any take home pain killers and after the GA had worn off were back to themselves. This particular pug that I mentioned in my OP did not get any take home pain killers either.
  4. BARF patties and RMB are a fantastic diet. Get rid of the dry food.
  5. I am pretty sure that my butcher sells Ox Tounge for $2.50 each.
  6. Yes swelling occurs so don't be to worried. Sometimes people think that their dog has not been desexed as the scrotum is swollen. Is your dog showing any kind of discomfort? I am sure you can be your own judge is in massive amounts of pain or just a little bit uncomfortable. If he is just a bit uncomfortable, most of them seem to feel the stitches pulling at some stage, then I wouldn't worry but if he is in alot of pain then a vet trip may be required.
  7. In sting/bite situations I will always use Prednil tablets. If I see one of the pugs faces starting to swell they get a tablet or two.
  8. Is it classed as offal? I would see it as more of a muscle like the heart.
  9. It can take anywhere from a few days to over a week for a dog to display signs of KC. Some will get really nasty cases of it with the snotty noses and awful coughing, others will get only a snotty nose and then others will get nothing. Vet really can't do anything for your dog unless he develops a secondary infection when they will give antibiotics. If it's just KC then you just have to ride it out. Are all of your dogs vaccinated? I would keep your sheltie, border collie and papillon as isolated from the puppies and obviously your kennels as possible.
  10. Left front? Could be that he has strained his elbow or shoulder, could also be that his neck is out. Maybe he has elbow displaysia or his bones are growing incorrectly. Can you have a prod and poke around to see if you can locate the pain? Does he jump off things? I would rest him for a few days and see how he is. If things don't improve then a trip to the vets is worth making.
  11. Totally agree. Here's an idea. Put the stupid bitch of an owner in the pound and let the dog stay in the house. What the *@#* is wrong with people? If the owner can't cope with blood for three weeks then as someone said before how the hell is she going to cope with whelping (the bitch having discharge for a a few weeks after the birth) and the piss and shit from the puppies for 8 weeks? The dog is a mutt it shouldn't be bred. Now for a constructive comment. Maybe suggest a crate. (for the owner to lock herself in)
  12. I use the cannex pink ones here. I chop them up into quaters and put them into pieces of cheese. The trick is to give the piece of cheese with the tablet in it whilst holding another piece of cheese. They usually are in such a rush to get the next piece of cheese they don't notice the bit of tablet in the first one.
  13. Dew claws? No such thing as dew paws. Is it the nail that sticks out from the side of her legs? Do you keep them cut short?
  14. OMG poor little guy. Healing vibes for him. I am so glad that we don't have cane toads or any other nasty things here.
  15. I feed a BARF diet once a day at about 5pm. When I had pups here they were fed 3 times a day. 6am, 12pm and 5pm. Thinking about the amount of food I have eaten over the last few days I think that my liver might need detoxification.
  16. Leave them. It's a massive operation and like cutting a toe off now she is older. If they are removed it should be done when they are only a few days old. Both of my pugs have their dew claws and have never had any problems with them. They actually use them to clean their faces with. All you have to remember is to make sure you give them a trim every now and again.
  17. Seriously make your own. I do up my veggie/fruit slops every two months (if it's only my two dogs) which probably takes 2 hours. Probably once a month I will buy chicken necks, offal, kangaroo, bones and other meat and package them up into zip lock freezer bags. Which probably takes another 2 hours. When it comes to feeding it's easy. I will get out of the freezer a chinese take away container with the slops in (which will last as few days meals) and whatever meat/bones they are having for the following nights dinner and leave it in the fridge. It is defrosed by the next evening and ready for them to eat.
  18. Make sure the chicken and turkey mince is actually minced meat and bones not just meat. What do you mean by him being introduced to chicken if he is already eating chicken mince? Get rid of the pasta & farex as they are not needed. Included more veggies then just carrot. You can scrap the dry food altogether and feed BARF patties and chicken carcus mince/chicken necks. Simple and easy.
  19. Perhaps seeing that you said they make it up themselves you can get the quantity they put in to each batch of everything. Ask how many continers the batch makes up and hey presto you can work out your percentages. I would be a little worried about is them adding calcium. It's not needed. If the calcium was in the from egg shells from whole eggs they had added then I wouldn't be worried but it seems like it is powdered supplements that they have added. Not sure about feeding offal every day either.
  20. I would be trying the anthistamines before dosing with steroids (prednisolone).
  21. If he is constantly throwing up then get him to the vets. If it's a once off then more then likely he has eaten something his tummy doesn't agree with. Keep an eye on him. As for how you would know if he is allergic to the treats? Don't feed them to him and see if the symptoms go away. Alot of dogs can also be allergic to dry food, because of the grains in it, and processed wet food because of the presevatives and other junk that is in it.
  22. Isn't there a specific hand wash that mechanics use to get the grease off their skin?
