  1. What sort of dog? I have heard of vets missing that dew claws were half ripped off etc and the cause of the pain in long haired dogs. Probably a good idea to ring up the clinic to tell them you have found the problem. Doubt that they would refund the consult they may however give you a consult for free if you think he needs some antibiotics prescribed.
  2. Did the xray show any abnormality to the hip at all, apart from it being dislocated? It may be advisable to consult with a doggy physio afterwards to streghten the mucles around the joint so that it is less likely to happen again.
  3. How is Parvo diagnosed? If it is just done by symptoms or are vets able to take blood and diagnose right there on the spot? I would have thought that blood or other samples would have to be sent off to a lab. MissyMo how was Hef diagnosed? As for causing people to get paranoid I think that people need to realise that you need to take resonable precautions with your dogs, ie vaccinating, but you can't wrap them in cotton wool.
  4. You might find that Coburg has a larger european based population, maybe even now asian, could be that people with english as a second language don't understand the importance of dog vaccination. Whereas I would say Baronia and surrounds has a larger population of causacian residents that have been raised knowing that you need to vaccinate. Just a thought.
  5. How about just adding some more fish, like sardines, to your dogs diet?

    Desexing

Having had quite a few pugs come into rescue when they were on heat I can tell you I am sure as hell glad I desexed my girl when she was young. Having to put doggy undies on and off (when they wanted to go outside and when they came back inside) and change pads for three weeks is bloodyhard work if not a bit yucky.
  7. No parvo in my area I think my vet was meaning. And yes my vet did comment that when he first started out many years ago he worked around the Dandenong/Doveton area for a while (classed as a lower socio-economic standing area) and he said that people are less likely to vaccinate in that area and they had wards and wards of puppies with parvo.
  8. A resonsible breeder should be microchipping when the pup is vacinated. I know most state laws differ but the bottom line is that the dog should be chipped. If the breeder is not doing it. First port of call is the Vet for microchipping. I thought that now all states had a law that breeders must chip puppies before they go to their new homes. I would see a breeder as being irrisponsible if they are selling puppies without chipping them first. An dyes if you pup is not chipped go get it done right away.
  9. If he hasn't thrown up again then it most likely was his food. Dogs throw up things that their bodies can't digest, the body wants it out. What sort of mince are you feeding? Hope it's not minced chicken carcusses (dog mince) as you should never feed cooked bone. If you are wanting to feed a RAW or BARF diet get rid of the rice, food process the veggies/fruit and feed meat that has bone in it.

    Desexing

I have found in some older males that it stops them wanting to hump everything but apart from that I don't think it changes things at all. Good on you for you being a responsible dog owner and desexing.
  11. Just back from my vet and he said he hasn't heard of a case and hasn't had a case this year, now is supposed to be the season for it We live in the eastern burbs of Melbourne. He also said that it is almost unheard of in dogs that are fully vaccinated. From my knowledge it is something that is seen alot in pound situations, ie lots of unvaccinated dogs coming together. and also most prevalant in puppies that have not had their full vaccinations. I am wondering if there has been an outbreak after this NSW dogs show if there is a link to breeders/show people being less inclined to vaccinate after two of the three puppy needles, ie therefore dogs aren't theoretically fully vaccinated. (Yes I know the debate on vaccinations and over vaccinating)
  12. I use for pugs 1 to 2 chicken necks a day and some veggie slops. So maybe for larger dogs 3 chicken necks and some veggie slops. Kangaroo is probably the lowest in fat of meats so maybe you could grab some roo tails and replace the brisket bones with them. If you feed a RAW/BARF diet it's not really about what you feed but about how much you feed. BigBen is right in saying feeding should be approx 2% of their ideal weight. And of course lots of exercise.
  13. I think that Priceless Pets in the cheapest. http://www.pricelesspets.com.au/?page=home I always check ebay out first though.
  14. Some dogs like water and some don't. How old is he?
  15. She is very cute. What has she been diagnosed with? Entropion? There are some tear stain removal products on the market that might be helpful. I am doubting very much that the dodgey BYB breeders will call you back. They have your money now. Lets hope others do not buy their other puppies. May I ask why you chose not to go to a registered breeder in the first place? The cost?
  16. Mmmm can't say I agree with you doing that. My prefered method is to either 'yelp', because they do instantly know that they have hurt you and they shouldn't be doing that, and get a toy and put in their mouth instead.
  17. I think some chicken farms sell to the public. Kangaroo & Minced meat you can buy from Pet Produce Stores As for other meat maybe some abbatoirs sell to the public or I have seen ad's on TV for discount meat places. Veggies maybe try a market if you have one close. I buy the dogs chicken necks from Lenards, lamb bones & offal from a local butcher, kangaroo meat from the Pet Produce Store & veggies/fruit from the local supermarket. I have tried buying from markets but they didn't seem that much cheaper and by the time I factored in petrol and the length of time it took to get there it isn't worth it for me.
  18. Have only used slippery elm for upset tummies. What are you wanting to treat?
  19. Can't comment on dry food as I don't feed it. Proabably would suggest lamb bones as they are the softest (apart from chicken). In my experience if a dog, that is feed a good diet of bones and other crunchie things, is going to have bad teeth it is due to their mouth confirmation and you really can do nothing about it. In smaller dogs the teeth are usally so squashed together that they are unable to self clean. Both of my pugs are fed the same diet and whilst my male pug, who obviously has a bigger head, has had no teeth problems but my female pug, who has a mini head so therefore not much room to fit all of those teeth, has had to have 3 teeth out because they were going bad.
  20. I second that a vet is the only way to go. Yes it could be a cancerous lump but seeing you mentioned that she is not desexed it also could be Mastitis. Lumps are not something to really fuss around with whe it comes to medical care. Go get the vet to take a fine needle biopsy.
  21. OMG. Poor baby and yes what absolutle idiots to bring sick dogs/puppies to a big show like that.
  22. What the? Poeple took puppies with Parvo to a dog show? What symptoms are they showing?
  23. Could be just a tummy bug. My boy had the same thing a month or so ago. Refused to eat anything other then his dinner, for a pug this is very unnormal as they are pigs, was not his usual bring self, just wanted to snuggle and sleep, would drink water and then throw bit up, poo was a bit runny. I kept and eye on him, to make sure he wasn't constantly throwing up or constantly pooing, and fed him cooked chicke breast for a few days. Took him at least 3 to 4 days to get over but after that he was fine. The vet wouldn't have been able to do much more for him then I did. So watch your boy. If he starts to constantly throwing up or pooing then straight to the vet. Otherwise it's probably a bug that will pass.
  24. Some dogs don't fully develop (fill out) untill they are at least 2 years of age. Many puppies go through a gangly stage when they are around 5 to 8 months old. Give her time. How often and for how long are you walking her? Asking because doing extra exercise with her wont put any more condition/muscle onto her but could do harm with her growing bones. You could consider swimming as an option. As for food some dry food doesn't agree with some dogs whilst others do.
