  1. 0 Days to Go! :D Welcome little buddy!
  2. Nosework on Tuesday! I'm so excited! Hopefully Malcolm will be too when he realises there's leftover steak, chicken and kangaroo sausages on offer. :) He's had a big weekend. Yesterday we had friends over including their noisy 8-month old baby, so Malcolm practiced staying on his mat while baby was eating, and kangaroo jerky was shoveled into him every time baby made a sound. He did pretty well considering he finds high pitched baby squeals very stressful (who doesn't?). Then today he visited my parent's house for the last time in a while. They are getting a new puppy, and we won't be having the dogs interact until puppy is older and Malcolm's dog reactivity is further improved. Don't want to risk either dogs' mental health. So anyway, today we put his ruf ruf anxiety vest on him and wrapped him up in my old dressing gown during lunch preparations (meals getting prepped are one of his triggers). My dressing gown worked exceptionally well! I might have to take it with me to all scary things. He did some anxious barking and wall/light staring at times, but he could be redirected unlike his visit on ANZAC day where he got so stressed out we had to take him home. We've been moving back up with the relaxation protocol since being away. I'm going to try Task 4 tomorrow provided he doesn't have a bad day after having such a big weekend. :)
  3. Thanks! How wonderful it must be to see Maggie in a great home, recovering well from her op, and having fun doing agility. :)
  4. That's wonderful westiemum. And such a good response from Andy. I have a special place in my heart for dogs who struggle and overcome big things. :)
  5. May I ask what the ankle wraps are for, koalathebear? Is it to improve proprioception?
  6. This is a great article about resource guarding from a person with qualifications in the science of animal/dog behaviour: http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/theotherendoftheleash/resource-guarding-treatment-and-prevention Also see this: http://brightdog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Aggression-Ladder-1.png Do not suppress growling through punishment as you will lose the warning sign and pup will escalate up the aggression ladder to snapping and biting. Puppy needs to learn that you approaching is a GOOD thing. :)
  7. Yep, 15 kgs in both my recent unit complexes. Yet a terrier may be way less suitable for unit living than a great dane or big dog??? Fortunately, I have not seen this enforced so far. I tried for "CAn I have up to 15kg's of pets...1 x 4kg papillon and 1 x 5 kg rag doll and I could have something else?" My strata manager laughed :D As a former strata manager that would have made my day! Best part of the job was asking people to submit pet applications with photographs included where possible. And yes the photos were shown around the office for stress relief. :D I can tell you that in NSW at least, there is a move for strata schemes to become a lot more pet friendly as there is a growing recognition of the tremendous benefits of pet ownership. Developers are also seeing that having pet friendly by-laws brings in the $$$.
  8. Agreed PossumCorner. I was looking at the commends on a Facebook post (SMH or something), and a greyhound racer was blaming the government for the fact that he'd be euthanizing his 9 greys as his "loved" dogs were now worthless. I wish I could say it was a comment troll. I just... Someone pointed out that he wouldn't kill his children if Little Athletics were banned, but the point seemed to have been lost on him.
  9. Sorry We keep thinking of putting in one of those Anne but I'm worried my little guy will be too small / scared to push it. What sort of dog so you have and how heavy is the flap?
  10. So close! I can almost smell the puppy breath! ????
  11. Interesting perspective Steve. What exemptions do/have the racing greyhound breeders receive/d? I too was thinking that they might just do as you have posited above.
  12. Welcome Bluehealer! Wow, you really are opening up a whole new world for Colby! That's amazing progress! I hope you realise we now need a picture of your clever boy. :D I love your name, too. You are a blue heeler healer. :)
  13. The silence is deafening, isn't it. Someone on DOL once posted a story about how dogs don't die, they fall asleep in your heart, and when your heart hurts it's because they've woken up and are madly wagging their tails saying "Remember me? I love you!" I find the imagery of that comforting, and an accurate way to describe the pain. Perhaps you may find it comforting too. Here's the full text:
  14. Little Jeune certainly lucked out when she chose you to be her mum, DDD.
  15. He's a toy but a little older as he was originally a show prospect, so if you think he looks bigger that may be why. Isn't he divine. :)
  16. Oh oh oh! Seven days and counting (for my parents). I AM SO EXCITED I JUST CAN'T EVEN. ETA a picture:
  17. Thank you! :D Cheering for Dozer's improvement with noises and faster recoveries and LOVE the image of him prancing around hoping for a crate fairy visit. Too cute. :)
  18. Yeah it does seem to work for some and not others. I know of someone who has to replace it at the 3 week mark (instead of the standard month) as there's a distinct change in the dog. I'm still not 100% convinced that it's helping my dog, but I don't want to change multiple things at once. Some dogs get confused or agitated by the scent. We have to air ours for a bit when the package is opened, as it has a chemical smell that my dog finds aversive. In terms of products, each kind of suits different applications. Diffuser - good for the dog when only needed in a particular room, e.g. a dog with separation anxiety or who spends the vast majority of their time in one room and isn't anxious outside the home. Collar - good for a dog who needs support wherever he goes, in or out of the house or in multiple rooms (presumably cheaper than multiple diffusers) Spray - only lasts a couple of hours, so best for situational things, like going for a walk or a show, traveling in the car, going to the vet. NB you spray a bandana or blanket or something not the dog. :) There's more information on the Adaptil website.
  19. I can faintly hear a drumroll, increasing as the days pass...
  20. Those ears are a thing of beauty. Impeccable.
