  1. Nosework is based on detection dog training and the dog finds hidden target odours in different environments, which could be indoors or outdoors. In tracking, a scent trail is laid out which the dog has to follow to get to the end. Snap silentchild.
  2. Although both are scent related, noseworks is different from tracking and does not have any obedience requirements. :)
  3. I saw a St Bernard at Bunnings who was turned away as he didn't have a muzzle and couldn't fit in a trolley. ????
  4. Bumping up a SUPER old thread today. My parent's toy poodle pup had his first checkup with their/our vet today. The vet wanted to give the heartworm injection but his person who bred his mum repeated to me a half dozen times over two phone calls NOT to give it to him. However, this same vet recommended that I don't give the injection to my dog as he has an autoimmune disorder and there was some data about it potentially being bad for such dogs AND MORE IMPORTANTLY she trusted that I would remember to remember to give him the tablets. She was prepared to give my dog the jab as she said it was perfectly safe, but that it may be safer to do the tablets since I could be trusted to remember them. In other words, as per below, the risk of no coverage is worse than any risks associated with the vaccine, even for a dog with an autoimmune disorder. My parents were terrible at remembering our papillon's heartworm tablets so they're going to have keep that in mind. I'd be interested to hear others' views on the matter. The health risks of obesity are overwhelming to dogs. How many vets will tell a dog owner that their dog is too fat. I'll tell you it ain't many. You know what I think? I think a lot of vets would be advocating the injection because they weigh the risks of no coverage of heartworm against the risk of the jab and decide in favour of the jab. And if they assess a pet dog owner as being unlikely to ensure that their dogs get heartworm protection by any other means, then I agree with them. But for a dedicated dog owner who's prepared to avoid the injection and use a LOWER RISK option - why wouldn't you?? I completely agree with TW! I also think vets are so used to treating to the lowest common denominator that unless you walk in with "dedicated dog owner" tattooed on your forehead a vet will recommend the 12mth injection.
  5. I'm not even in a border town and I don't travel with Malcolm, but seeing posts about dogs who went missing or were stolen and wound up in other states, and even hearing from my own vet about people bringing home lost dogs found on holidays, I didn't want to risk it. I did some research on DOL and Central Animal Records came up as a good option. I also liked that I could change my details online. I'd still keep them on the NSW database even if it's not a legal requirement (I feel like it might be?) as I can imagine some NSW people not bothering to check other registries if they couldn't read the chip. Edited to add that I've seen recommendations not to add dogs to all/too many registries as you may forget to update them all.
  6. That's amazing Taliecat. Well done to you and your boy!
  7. Jumabaar (Dr Jaime Jackson from Primal Paws) may be able to point you in the right direction if you send her a PM. She is helping me with my dog's back problem, which our GP vet wasn't able to diagnose or treat beyond their general vet work (since they're not specialists).
  8. Thanks Anne. I had been wondering the same.
  9. I had Malcolm added to CAR as well as NSW, since NSW refuse to share their data.
  10. I think you win at Dogspotting Corvus! :D
  11. Great update Snook. I get almost teary when I think back to the Justice who would have panic attacks at the mere sight of another dog. Little Malcolm update. After mastering his busy buddy barnacle food dispenser he started taking interest in a puppy Kong I had laying about. So last night after Noseworks I filled it with some loose kibble and he went at it, and today he's having a vile concoction of mashed banana, kibble, a green lipped mussel and a sprinkling of BBQ chook leftover from Nosework. This is the dog who previously shut down in the presence of a Kong despite it being filled and coated with BBQ chicken. Noseworks went ok. He was pushed a little too hard during one search and got stressed (the hide was on top of a chair and he knew it was there but lacked the confidence to jump up). Then he saw a dog when they're meant to be kept in their own vehicles, and I dropped his calming cap and had trouble redirecting him from his reflection in the car windows. However the cap was found and he recovered. He was very excited to be there and my goodness was he pulling towards the hall to launch into a search. He didn't want to leave! Now I've just got to make sure they don't stress him next session as they're bringing in some metal objects to confuse the dogs, and despite talking about it I still don't think the instructor understands that it's not straight up mirrors that set off his OCD but rather things onto which light is reflected or which reflect his appearance in a non-standard way (e.g. a shiny surface or metal or glass even if it's a matte finish). I don't think they've come across this before nor realise how bad it can be when the dog otherwise looks ok to most. I also need to get some sort of wax or resin for his paws as he's sliding around like no tomorrow.
  12. I've sent you a PM about one group you may be interested in for anxious dogs. I'm also a member of Dog Training Games & Enrichment but it's not as good as I thought it would be to be honest.
  13. Yep, kennel cough is still yearly. http://www.ava.com.au/node/1050
  14. Dog urine spreads out from the initial spot. I can't remember by how much. 2 or 3 times the circumference? So you need to spray beyond what is immediately noticeable. You might also want a UV light. Damn you autocorrect.
  15. Sorry PK - was that you offering to take him - then changing your mind Lol, I was worried about how my comment would come across. Love your boy. :)
  16. We have a couple of Iggies who go for walks down our street. The owner was so excited that I knew what they were, LOL.
  17. My parents' puppy is struggling with that too! He cries if he can't see my mum even if he's in the same room. How are you working on it? Also, we need more pictures of Marshall!
  18. I agree that he looks fine. A lot of dogs are overweight and obese, and I think it skews what people see as a healthy body condition. This chart may help you: http://www.wsava.org/sites/default/files/Body%20condition%20score%20chart%20dogs.pdf
