Same here.... "ooo look a miniature collie" "she's a shetland sheepdog" "was she a pomeranian crossed with a lassie?" "no, she is a shetland sheepdog" or - another one.... "is she a sheltand sheepdog" (finally!!) "she's just a puppy isn't she?" "no, she is fully grown" "she's a bit too small then?" "nope she is right on 14", the correct height for a girl" "no - shelties are much bigger than that, my friend's sheltie is twice that size" I've also been told they are an abomination, a worthless mutt and that they shouldn't exist. I've been told by others they are just a GSD with a different name just so we can get more money for the pups. Apparently they are also a dog with no purpose. These comments are all just from this year :-( Doesn't help your cause when you have the conversation I had at a herding training day the other week. White GSD owner there - at least they said he was a GSD. I asked if it were a White Swiss Shepherd (sorry all, but we've had a few come out to show here in SA). The owner said no, BUT, if the dog went overseas to Europe, it could get registered as a WSS, then it could be bred from and its progeny could be registered in Australia as WSS.... seriously??

can someone please clarify for me the Angel Eyes that a few online pet stores are selling (not wanting to name the advertisers on here) and one of the well known canine stores (for show people ) here in Adelaide is the newer ok formula or the original one?

Hoping it is a genuine sale because of family loss or something. Shelties sometimes come up like this when an older owner dies. Always very sad. they look like they have been very well looked after in these photos

Also - on your courses - I am not sure what Nikon does - but canon have a website with tutorials on it for their cameras - World of EOS - I have picked up lots of tips and hints in there. There is some really good basic stuff about shutter speed and aperture. I am sure Nikon would have something similar? I've learnt heaps in here too - when Alicia used to do the photography challenges each month to teach us different techniques. I am not sure if some of those old threads are still around?

Huge warning about not buying online for a major camera purchase - I think I am the best example for that. I upgraded to a Canon 7D earlier in the year (love it!). I got it home, charged the battery and the first pictures I took were all bright pink and green, split images.. really interesting. Rang up the camera store and asked about it (thinking it was the memory card). Turns out it was the processor in the camera. They swapped the camera over straight away - was very good. If I had bought online, I would have had the hassle of having to package the camera up and send it back. I have no idea what would have happened if I had bought a grey import. I have bought lenses, flashes and memory cards online - (DWI is really good), but am very very very glad that I didn't buy my camera online. I just don't think the risk is worth it. I did my homework though - I fond the best online price that wasn't a grey import (turned out to me a camera store in Brisbane by memory) and took that into my camera store here (Diamonds). They price matched. So I got a very good deal. I only bought the body as I had lenses already. You are researching really well. Take the best non-grey import price into your camera store and ask them to price match. Just FYI - the lens I use the most for every day action shooting is my 18-200 f3.5-F5.6 lens. It is really good. (I have a canon 7D). It is affordable and a good place to start I think. I used this lens a lot on my entry level Canon (400d) and got good shots with it. The other lens I use is the 50mm 1.8 - but I use this mostly for portrait shots. I, like many others, am saving up for a 70-200 f2.8 lens.

Yes, you should tell the landlord. It is a major thing that you would be undertaking. Also - what they won't tell you about synthetic grass - it gets very hot, it fades, it smells of urine when dogs wee on it all the time - even the really really expensive stuff with the holes in it to let the wee through and it needs to be replaced every 5 to 10 years depending upon its quality (less for the real cheap stuff). Not worth it at all when turf is one third the price and if you treat it right, will last forever. I had my couch put in as turf. Didn't let the dog on it for 4 days. Had it put down during a heat wave and so was very worried about it. Watered it twice a day for a week with a sign at the front of my house saying I had permission (during the worst of the water restrictions here). Has been fine and no issues. One huge hint for everyone - do NOT get sub-surface watering if you have dogs. Mine have tried to dig it up in a couple of places, trying to get to the water. Apparently that is a normal thing (and the scum bag company that installed the system knew this but didn't tell me). System stays off now and the dogs don't try to dig.

my lawn is santa ana couch - drought tolerant and looks good. A section of it gets very little sun (shaded by the house) and the kikuya that was there, wouldn't grow in this spot. The couch is fine. No goat tracks from energetic dogs running on it. I do get the odd burn spot from their wee at the moment - but I had a "dog rock" before that stopped that. Need to get another one. Not sure if this helps you. I love couch underfoot - much nicer than other types of grass. I get it mowed every three weeks - but at work, where the grass is absolutely green and immaculate all year around (it is a school), the couch is mowed every week. In summer it is watered weekly to keep it this way.

some dogs develop allergies to kikuya. Santa Ana Couch (sp) is good - fairly tough, drought tolerant and also is on runners. Adelaide Oval is couch.

For change of ownership for the microchip - Australian Animal Registry (AAR) will let you transfer an dog into your name if you sign a satutory declaration form. link: - http://www.aar.org.a...eOwnership.aspx You shouldn't have any problems and you don't need to get him re-chipped. If you want his pedigree papers transferred into your name, this is a different story, but give DogsNSW a call and explain the situation.

What ratios do you use? (cider to water)

"eye envy" will also get rid of the tear staining. It can be hard to find, but works really well. Get the reason behind the tears though checked out by your vet. If it is because of blocked tear ducts, you will want to get that fixed.

Finnesse - going to have to try the peppermint essence. Junket tablet didn't work. Today though - I had newspaper underneath the vetbed - was soaked when we got there (not wee but drool). Molly wore a babies bib, and Geordie a thundershirt (to keep him covered so his sister's drool didn't end up on him). She was still sick (no vomit because she doesn't get fed before we travel - just lots of drool and a bit of bile) - but her brother wasn't covered in it this time. Also wanting to hear how the calming cap goes and will also try the desensitising method mentioned.

Rommy had a training run yesterday - first for awhile. She has lost quite a bit of confidence. I thought she lacked focus because she had probably been having a phantom pregnancy, One of the ducks tried to have a go at her, and whilst she put it back in its place, she shut down. I didn't think the head butt she got at the sheep clinic earlier in the year had affected her, but I reckon it might have. She just isn't switched on anymore and isn't really enjoying it at all. THere are so few opportunities to get her out here now, can't really work through it with her.

Can't have - has to wait until tomorrow here to get the challenge AFTER july 1st to qualify. I know of at least two other dogs who would have got their supreme if the ruling was FROM 1st July and not AFTER 1st July. So - the person on FB that is claiming their SA dog is a Supreme CH, is jumping the gun just a little bit....

Tried the ginger tablet - didn't work. Will need to get a couple of baby bibs, cos she manages to get drool all over herself. Was told to try junket tablets (and old fashioned remedy for car sickness that lots of people swear by). Will give that a go tomorrow.

My girl is going ok on the black hawk still - but on the new bag - lots of flatulence.

One day, I will have the courage to go up to someone like this and apologise to them, on behalf of all teachers for our education system failing them. If it makes you feel better - friend sent me some photos he took of me and my baby puppy in the group line up on the weekend. I knew we were bad - but not that bad!! Lots and lots of training to do (more for me than the dog.....)

I bought mine from Australian Air Express at the airport in Sydney. They would have them in Townsville too I would expect? my PP40 cost me $50 I think (in May). I was transporting from Sydney to Adelaide and buying the crate was the same price as hiring it from one of the pet transport companies.

I am curious too..... I have a puppy who is getting very car sick each time we go anywhere. It can be a short trip or a longer trip - it doesn't matter. She had travelled previously - trips of around 2 hours previously with no incident and even had a 3 hour plane flight with no problems. I have noticed that she has been vomitting only since her final C3 vaccination. Could there be a link? Do the ginger "travel calm" tablets work? Has anyone tried the seasickness tablets like Quell?

ROmmy is coming out to the training days coming up. It will be interesting to see if her head is back in the game or not.

my girl was sired by an 11 1/2 year old - his last time at stud. He is still kicking on - he's just over 15 years old now - and for a breed that normally makes it to 12 - 14 years of age - he is doing very well.

Adelaide is one of the airport terminals where dogs are not allowed, and so must travel as freight and be picked up at the freight terminal - I thought Brisbane was the other - but maybe it is perth? (Regardless of the rules of any particular airline....)

Glad you've made a decision. I am definitely biased - and would have said a sheltie. My couch potato is sleeping next to me right now.
