  1. We have had similar threads on this before and I agree with all the posters and have seen what you are talking about. Stock work to me is using quietly confident controlled dogs. The idea used to be not to stress the stock at all? Now and I don my flame suit it seems to be about instructors making a buck There is nothing nicer than watching a dog move and work stock with out biting ripping or harassing the animals. I can sit at a 3 sheep trial all day and more and just watch them work magic stuff indeed. I cringe when i see photos of dogs biting the animals working so close and being potrayed as proven working dogs. I suppose each to there own but I was bought up to belive in steady control not rushing the animals off their feet. Not to mention the dust and chaos it causes in the real working situation. In the old days sheep were worth money maybe its because today they are worth bugger all? Ruth
  2. And because she is a sweetie Jazii who is working the cats already and showing eye and heading skills Dont forget the Aussie shepherds my next fav after Coolies and Working borders like Trim Nina an older bitch is keen but has not alot of style.
  3. Here is Gypsy she has won a 3 sheep trial she has lots of eye and works sheep, ducks and cattle oh and Goaties but even though mine are feral they are not like the ones persephone's dogs tackle mine are for breaking pups in so very quiet unless having a bad goat day Rolli who uses some eye he works nice and wide off the stock unless they give him trouble and has a natural herding instinct he bought the sheep to me the first time he was worked at 6 months old. Frank who is a long haired Coolie like Perry he comes from Mudgee and is a young dog with heaps of enthusiaum and natural instinct I will start him in the holidays. He actually shares some of chills bloodlines.
  4. RIP Special girl and play with the mudgee mutts at rainbow bridge. Hugs for Mr and Mrs R from us all here at Coolibah
  5. Rescue Rainbow Bridge Poem Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch. It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often. He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge. With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting. One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for a while to explain it to him. You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge. The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life. "Watch, and see" said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together. "What happened?" "That was a rescuer." The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on earth, across The Rainbow Bridge. "I think I like rescuers," said the first animal. "So does GOD," was the reply. 6. Great thread I am in agreeance regarding photos of dogs chasing biting and working real close and being touted as having working instinct. I love it when I show my pups and young dogs stock for the first time and they just do the whole heading and balance thing naturally it is awesome. And when a rescue comes in from no background and is an adult dog it is even more awesome to see the instinct just emerge, I love it. I too worry about the whole herding phenomenom and have also seen some shockers at workshops. IMO Some of the instructors seem to just be in it for the money and that worries me, better don my flame suit now.
  7. :D What a brave girl rest in peace and love to her poor mum Sleep well sweet lady. Ruth
  8. Oh Rozzie so sorry I know u loved and she loved u and Mr R rest in peace old girl hugs for u all at modh Ruth
  9. On the other end of the scale - my vet will desex anything she also works in a low income predominantly indegenous community and sees the result of undesexed/unvaccinated dogs every day.
  10. Is she vaccinated ? Regardless take her to the vet urgently please.
  11. Pity the "responsible breeder "who sold an registered undesexed male husky to my neighbours who now delight in breeding husky x wolfhound x mastif puppies who are then sold not vaccinated or chipped hadnt desexed him before he left home. I cant belive a breeder doing the right thing even gets bagged.

  17. Oh Rozzie :p she was so lucky to go to the bridge with you and Mr R snuggled up in front of the fire much better than her other alternative in the hands of a stranger in a cold pound, bless you and lots of hugs. Ruth
  18. Common misconception... Parvovirus can last a long time in the environment, perhaps as long as 9 months or so. Parvo is shed for the first two weeks or less after infection in the stool of an infected dog but only a tiny portion of infected stool (which could be months old depending on the environmental temperature and humidity) is needed to infect a non-immune dog. Every nine days or so, the antibody levels in a puppy drops by half. It's when the antibody level drops to a certain level, that the pup no longer has enough antibodies to protect them - if they are exposed to a large enough number of viral particles, they will get infected. Canine Adenovirus (canine hepatitis) can be transmitted via direct contact, contaminated objects such as hands, surfaces, clothing, etc., droplet (nasal discharge/urine), and aerosol spread. Leptospirosis/Leptospira bacteria are passed through the urine of infected animals including dogs, wildlife, rodents, and livestock. The bacteria can enter through a break in the skin or when infected urine is ingested. Outbreaks of Leptospirosis infections occur frequently after periods of heavy rain, as the bacteria can be found in standing water, rivers, streams, and ponds. Canine distemper virus is most often transmitted through contact with respiratory secretions. Contact with the urine and fecal material of infected dogs can also result in infection. Canine parainfluenze transmission is usually through airborne respiratory secretions (coughing or sneezing) from an infected dog, but infection can also occur through direct "nose-to-nose" contact or through contaminated hands, dishes, shoes/boots etc. So basically, taking a dog/pup that doesn't have immunity anywhere where other dogs (or dog owners) have walked, can be a risk. It is probably thought to be a small risk, until you become one of the "minority" who has a pup seriously affected by an infection. Excellent reply remember and I know from experience that vaccination does not always work Parvo strains have mutated and can be bought home on your shoes - you dont know as you have nothing to look for - untill u have had a puppy die from Parvo you just dont realize the risk of this horrendous disease they are happy little guys one minute and can be gone in a matter of hours.
