Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter
tdierikx replied to HeelerLove's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
What I can't get my head around is the amount of poop in some of the photos - especially in some of the empty runs... wouldn't one clean it up if they were trying to advertise how great the conditions are? And maybe a few shadecloths put up in the outdoor runs wouldn't go astray... they aren't expensive or hard to erect. T. -
I think you will find that Sheridan is NOT affiliated with the RSPCA in any way, shape, or form... but she does like having facts before making up her mind about things posted on the internet... Definitely not a bandwagon-jumper our Sheridan... lol! T.

Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter
tdierikx replied to HeelerLove's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I'm sorry, but if a dog is not safe to be around men or children, then it might actually be unrehomable. There are worse things than being given wings... Sometimes one's head needs to be the part to be doing the thinking instead of the heart. It is possible to do the right thing even when it hurts US to do it for the animal in question. I know I keep saying it, but I'll say it again... rescue isn't all sweetness and roses - it's a downright dirty, nasty, and heartbreaking business sometimes, but what is BEST for the animal in question is NOT warehousing it indefinitely (ostensibly looking for the "right home") because it has a pulse. Here's something for all those who think it's OK to house dogs in those conditions for extended periods of time - would you board/leave your dogs there? Even for a couple of weeks? T. -
If she gets a stat dec done regarding her providing the upkeep for the dog, she may be able to go to her local council and have his chip info updated into her name. Then he is hers to rehome. If she doesn't own the dog, then she can't legally transfer ownership to a new owner. T.

Isn't Jill lovely? And she really knows her Jacks... if and when you are ready, then I reckon she will happily bend over backwards to help you make a great match for your family. T.

My old girl will flatten a rude foster pup one minute, then be spooning with it in front of the heater the next... I don't intervene when she puts them in their place, because she can teach them manners way better than I can in that respect... *grin* If Kirah is actively telling a rude puppy off in a public place, please back her up and let the pup's owner know that Kirah is behaving that way because their puppy is obviously not under effective control. Some pups are way too "friendly" with other dogs, and it may do them good to learn that not all other dogs are going to let them get away with it. T.

Look up JRT Rescue... Jill may have a Jack Russell that may fit the bill... T.

Aren't they lovely there mita? I had a lovely chat with them a little while back too... T.

With regards to Clifford... 4.5 months kenneled at the Yagoona RSPCA shelter would most likely have seen him go "kennel crazy" - I've seen first hand what a bull breed dog that had been kenneled for too long can do to a handler (of no minor experience may I add)... Some dogs just shouldn't be warehoused in kennels for indeterminate periods - no matter how much money they are bringing in in donations. As for Charlie - I can't find any references other than those being thrown about by certain Facebook groups. I'll reserve judgement until I have irrefutable proof of the claims about Charlie - no matter what I usually think of the RSPCA. T.

Barriers To Formal Behavioural Assessment
tdierikx replied to Cosmolo's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Sharpei are usually OK once you get them out of the actual kennels... the ones I've come across haven't coped well with the confinement part of being incarcerated, but have been pretty happy to please once outside in an open area. T. -
I believe that the AWL have the same policing powers as the RSPCA... maybe someone should report this shelter? *grin* T.
-
Ummm... the AWL have the same policing powers as the RSPCA, yes? Wouldn't it be interesting if they did a spot check on some RSPCA shelters? I wonder if anyone has reported an RSPCA shelter to AWL? T.

DD - sometimes livestock just die... odds are this particular sheep just died of old age, going by the info provided by persephone... T.

Awww... ain't she purty? Happy Birthday Ruby!! T.

$400 plus spent on each dog coming through their shelter? They must be quoting regular retail prices on the vetwork then... most rescues can get vetwork, chips, vaccs, worming, etc, for under that price, and then even factoring in food you wouldn't necessarily go over $400 per dog... T.

As far as I'm concerned, their logo should read "all donations large or small"... Dog only knows where the millions of dollars worth of donations go each year - I'm not seeing any of it being used to improve the local facilities/shelter near me - in fact they are trying to get the State government to pay for an upgrade... *sigh* T.

Way to go miss Trixie! May you have many more made up Happy Birthdays! T.

Barriers To Formal Behavioural Assessment
tdierikx replied to Cosmolo's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Probably a bit of a mix of all of your points Cosmolo... plus the fact that no-one volunteering to assess dogs in a pound environment wants their assessment to be used against them if the dog behaves differently in a different environment. What needs to be understood about most of the assessments being done and noted here - they are a guideline for experienced rescuers to get a basic idea of how that particular dog reacts in a stressful environment like a pound. None of the assessments should be taken as a perfect summation of how the dog will be outside of that environment. As long as the assessments are taken in the vein of how they are offered here, then all should be good. T. -
It definitely seems that she has... legs like a supermodel! T.

Things Your Dogs Do To Get Your Attention
tdierikx replied to huski's topic in General Dog Discussion
Harper comes and sits next to my arm when I'm on the computer (and she wants some loving) and starts manically licking my arm and elbow... which makes it VERY hard to navigate with the mouse! Zeddy will sit next to me and start sighing and whining if she doesn't get an immediate response. Pickles has no decorum at all - she just stands on her back legs and starts pawing at me for attention. Trouble sits in front of me and just stares for as long as it takes... T. -
Butter wouldn't melt... sure... her name is Trouble for a reason... What do you mean "stole someone's Puppacino"? I'm a little bit crazy... I is cute, yes? T.

You wants one CLBS?? You know we are happy to adopt to you any time... *grin* T. -
My heart dog (went to the Bridge in 2004) stood over me on my bed when she was 10 weeks old and told my flatmate there was no way he was entering my room while I was asleep... the poor guy was only trying to tell me there was a phonecall for me... lol! She was the perfect dog in every respect - good with people, other animals, etc - but she wouldn't hesitate to stand between me and a threat and make it known that she wasn't allowing anything bad to happen to me. She proved this on a couple of occasions... T.
