Awww little Barkly... who would have known? Control Unleashed is a great program, and I agree with Megan, click to calm is full of helpful tips, especially if Barkly is "reactive" to certain stimuli. Have you had a look at Karen Overall's protocol for relaxation (hope the link below works)? http://dogscouts.org/Protocol_for_relaxation.html Best of luck Luke!

I can only highly recommend Ian Dunbar's site quoted about What I would do is have the crate on the floor, door open and treats inside. Every time the pup ventures in it, he gets treats and gets positively reinforced for getting in on his own accord. Once your pup is comfortable doing so, I would stuff a kong on a rope (or similar toy) with some really yummy smelly food. Show the kong to your pup, tie it up safely at the back of the crate and shut the door with puppy outside the crate. If everything goes according to plan your pup will want to get in and paw / bark at the door. Open the door and let him go in so he can have a good lie down and chew at the toy. Repeat this process a few times until your pup is completely happy about going inside and understands that going in means getting a super yummy toy to chew on quietly. Only then would I start shutting the door on your pup. Good luck with your new pup, and don't forget to post a million photos!

Purely out of curiosity, why not? I haven't had to board for ages (I am lucky enough to have someone look after the dogs in her own home when I am away), but I thought vet clinics offering boarding were a good option (being the worry wart that I am) in case the dogs fell sick etc

High Fibre Diet For An English Cocker Spaniel
fbaudry replied to claireybell's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
and while you're at PetBarn, you can grab some frozen bones: roo tail, sheep neck, lamb flaps.... Archie gets one a day and produces small super firm tools (almost crumbly), and he has to strain to eliminate! -
They're great! you can also get the whole "frame" i.e. head, main bone and tail but beware, they are a bit messy

High Fibre Diet For An English Cocker Spaniel
fbaudry replied to claireybell's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Poor Jesie-Jane! Raw vegies should be a good source of fibers. What I do is put all the vegies through a blender (typically I have the following: 1 bunch of celery, 2 bunches parsley, 2 bunches spinach/bok choi, 1 kg carrots, a couple of apples). I add to this mix a couple of handful of rolled oats. This should last you for quite a while so you can freeze some. To make sure she eats it, I would mix it thoroughly with a good quality pet mince (i.e. mince that includes minced bones etc). The oats come out pretty much whole , but they had some bulk to the poo and will force Jesie to "work" to relieve herself, therefore giving her anal glands a work out... -
Same as Shyla here Archie loves the anchovy and salmon formula but is not too impressed by the duck. I found that adding a little bit of warm water to soften it makes it more palatable. :D

No stereotype but a very bad case of OCD here Spinning, spinning and more spinning (always counter clock-wise) triggered by permanent stress / anxiety / over-arousal. This has been happening from the day I picked him up from the breeder, aged four months. Stupid me failed to appreciate the magnitude of the problem and thought I could work on it. We have been seeing a behaviourist vet for over 18 months now, with behaviour modification exercises and different courses of medication with very little improvement. This anxiety is now translating into aggression towards the house cat for no reason and I am reaching a stage where I should re-assess everybody's quality of life here

Fast Eaters - How To Slow Them Down
fbaudry replied to claireybell's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
For dry kibble I reckon you'd be better off with something like a bob-a-lot: http://www.naturalpetstore.com.au/d/Bobalo...toys/bob-a-lot/ She would have to push it / paw at it to release a few bit of kibbles, and keep on doing that until it's empty. Nina Ottosson's pyramid is another good alternative -
Excellent, very informative post Thank you Aidan!!!! For smaller dogs, is it ok to follow your recipe and store in the fridge for a couple of days or would that "destroy" some of the active ingredients?
-
you can get them online from Dstore as well :p

same here.... most useless boredom buster when it comes to keeping cockers occupied for a long time! Have you had a look at the Busy Buddy Bouncy Bones?

What's A Super Palatable Kibble?
fbaudry replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yup, EP holistic salmon & anchovy, or Organix Castor&Pollux (both available from Naturalpetstore.com)... very palatable and so nice smelling that they do the trick as training treats for mine (who is otherwise fed raw!) Always wanted to ask: where did you buy your MM from Corvus? Would be interested in getting one to teach someone to settle down....
