  1. Greypets, Yes the return of mammary tumors is something I worry about. Powerlegs, I did have an elderly bitch with pyometra and its a terrible thing. This little one usually goes to one spot in an end room to do her jobs. Its spasmodic and only at nighttime. I wondered if the leg cocking was a bossy thing, she sure has the shepherd under control. As the first time owner of a small dog I am quite enjoying her.She is such a character, with the added bonus of a dog that barks when people enter the house yard.
  2. Thanks, I wondered if its a small dog thing, this cocking the leg. I think its so doesn't wet her leg seeing she is so close to the ground! There,s no uti problem. Yes I am training her, I caught her the other day getting into position! she knows she is not supposed to do it.
  3. After owning GSD,s for the past 30 years I decided I would adopted a 10 year old female Maltese from our local pound. Her microchip papers and council records said she was undersexed as late as 2005. She required major dental work and the removal of mammary tumors and a nipple. Because of the length of surgery time and the fact the vet said she had never had puppies we decided to wait and see if she would come in season. Well that has happened in the last week.Because of her size she is no problem to handle, she spends most of her time indoors and we live rural on large acres. What I have noticed with her is that she has some bad habits. Basically she acts like a male dog, marking her territory inside(I have stopped that) and outside. She cocks her leg to pee, she never squats. Some nights she toilets inside.I have been able to hide this from OH who would be less than impressed. Are these habits due to her not being neutered and if I did get her desexed do you think it will change or eliminate any of these habits at her age.
  4. I,m so sorry to read Maggie passed away. Hugs to you.
  5. What a good thread this is. So many people have lost loved pets this year. In June I lost my 15 yo torti cat to cancer.Little did I know that my dear Sophie was not well also and had 3 weeks to live. Dear Sophie, You nearly made 14yo old girl. I remember the day I picked you in Goulburn, all legs and ears. You clearly had suffered from being dumped in a box with your siblings at the age of 8 weeks. You didnt want to eat anything I gave you. You didnt play like a normal puppy and do all the naughty puppy things. You eventually filled out into a big girl who was rather bossy to your little sister. We saved you when you had Hemangiosarcoma of the Spleen at 8 year of age.Unlike many you lived for 6 more years. In the last year of your life you decided to play like a pup,it was so funny to watch you jumping around at night with those gangly legs. Six months have passed and we so miss you. Your spot in the bedroom is still there. Merry Christmas Sophie. Sweet Dreams.
  6. If all else fails try this. My own version of Satin Balls, mince, eggs, cream cheese ,peanut butter wheatgerm, oats soaked in mil.Sophie stopped eating and these she ate of her own accord.Mostly I had to break them apart and put a piece on her tongue. I also lost another girl also 10yo to cancer a few years ago, they are way too young. I send you all my best wishes at this horrible time and hope you get some insight into what is causing your girls illness.
  7. A few months ago I had a gsd in much the same situation. Sadly she passed away but the Hills a/d was the easiest food to feed her. I,d put it on my fingers and smear into in her mouth.Good luck with your girl.
  8. I dont come here much either anymore. This is so sad to read,he was much to young. I hope all our Sheps in heaven are looking after you Jack
  9. At least you are getting her seen too and hopefully the blood tests will give you some insight. In july my old girl went down hill,I was sure she would make her 14th birthday in Oct.She was doing so well, her last days came suddenly. She refused to eat in the end so I had no choice.Blood test showed no cancer, liver & kidneys both ok. However we took her off her arthritis pills thinking they made her sick and she lost her mobility. You would be surprised how much difference those pills made and she only had them every other day.. Good luck, I,ll be thinking positive thoughts for you and Jessie.
  10. Its well known not all dogs react the same to ticks, some go down quicker than others from my experience. Im not sure about animals building up an immunity to them either. A few years ago the brown/grass tick was very bad here and made a few of our cattle very weak. They literally had hundreds on them, we had use a spray and then not all dropped off. I recently heard of a dog in Queanbeyan who had a tick and was treated by the vet. Hilaryo, couldnt you have treated the dog straight away with Advantix and then monitored her. The ticks die very quickly I have found even though they stay attached in some cases.
  11. Considering most of the population live on or near the east coast, that means alot of dogs also live in this strip.I can,t see what the problem is, it becomes a routine that you just check your animals daily during tick season. As Scarlet said they love being handled and checked. I,m more frightened of snakes to tell you the truth!
  12. I,m interested in clippers for my own home use. Not an expensive set, so what brand and model can anyone recomend I look at?
  13. I can answer two of your queries. Son in law clipped his two older Border Collies every year and their coats became very thick and fluffy. The young ones he has now will not be clipped for that reason. I live in a tick area and I find the thicker double coat on my longhaired Gsd makes it harder for ticks to enter and attach. I have even found them dead on her coat.
  14. Your lucky she is short. My dog jumped up and clawed the window screens as well.
  15. I,ve threatened to dye mine black on ocassions as I cant keep the little devil white Whatever it is black/brown or in between I hope they find it.
  16. I am wondering what the law is in NSW regarding tethering of dogs. A tenant I have tethers his dogs 24/7. They are not farm working dogs, he does use them for pig hunting occasionally on my property. I,m just a bit concerned about the length of time they are contained as I dont believe in it.
  17. I,ve had three purebred GSD,s reach over 13 yo. Sophie who passed away in June was 13.8. She never looked her age and retained her glossy black coat to the end.
  18. I used the first recipe for my late gsd when she got a bit lean at times. I would bake the balls in the oven when she would not eat them raw. The did the job, work plus she had shiny coat.
  19. To start with I would continue feeding your regular diet and add the Uncle Albers as a side dish. Can you leave a bowl out for him to graze on. If he doesnt take to it you may have to mix it with the tin or mince you are using. My dog who passed away recently was a very thin dog all her life.I basically feed her a variety of fat foods. She would only eat her dry food with a bit of milk added to it. The aim is to put weight on asap. Good luck.
  20. Maybe she has some muscle bruising.I hope she makes a full recovery. The mice are bad this year.
  21. I,m so sorry for your loss. He looked a lovely old fella
  22. Run free Minnie Mo, just short of your 14th birthday. Its hard when you have them that long isnt it. Hugs to you Tramissa.
