  1. I told her to ring the vet tomorrow and find out about doing an autopsy, just coz I think she needs to get an answer. My other daughter has rang a vet friend of hers and chatted to her about it, and apparently there is also some kind of upper respiratory infection going around that can also cause similar symptoms. So will find out after she talks to the local vet tomorrow. Thanks to the people who gave opinions etc without the really obvious judgements. Ok, I always take my dogs to the vets if there is a problem .... but this was my adult daughter, who does not live under my roof, and as much as I might try and give her advice on how to do things, it is her responsibility to follow through and actually DO them
  2. Well the first vomiting occurred in the car in the middle of nowhere. Then the second one that afternoon. Then one vomit the next morning, then one more in the car on the way home. So it was 4 sessions of vomiting over a 36 hour period, and it was a very small amount of vomit. We were in a different town. We assumed at first it was just either a travel sickness thing, or some minor tummy upset. He seemed depressed and not much energy, but if you feel a bit crook, that's pretty normal. He was still eating and drinking fine. The diarreah didn't happen till during last night (after my daughter had gone to bed). Then she went to work first thing this morning, and unfortunately instead of knocking off when she was supposed to, she had to stick around for a meeting. If I had any idea he was sick before I travelled with him, then I wouldn't have travelled with him. I wouldn't intentionally put anybody else's dog at risk. I try and do the right things by my own dogs, get the vaccinations, do worming, all the normal stuff. But this pup wasn't mine, and I wasn't around him for the whole period of time that he was sick, so I only heard about some of the vomitting after it had happened. Once I started to think there ACTUALLY WAS something wrong, I told my daughter she would need to take him to the vet.
  3. My daughter (against my advice) got a little mixed breed puppy, from a place that obviously didn't take very good care of their dogs. I guess she thought she was saving it. Anyway, straight after getting it, she wormed it, and this resulted in several large stools that were literally riddled with worms. I find it hard to believe that such a small pup could have so many worms in it's body, but it was bad. Anyway, seemed to get over that ok. Fast forward to a few weeks later - daughter had to go to a wedding out of town, and I took her pup over in my car, but during the car trip, he vomited. I didn't think it was any big deal, but he vomited a couple more times that afternoon, he seemed a little out of sorts, bit quiet and depressed, but thought maybe it was from the travelling. Next morning, he was vomiting again, and was really, really skinny. You could now tell he was actually sick. Was very quiet, sleeping a lot. We had to travel back home and he vomited again on the trip. Anyway that night I started thinking, could it be parvo? I told my daughter to keep a really close eye on him and tell me if he had any other symptoms, e.g. diarreah, blood in stools etc. She had to work early the morning, started at 6.30am but dropped her little boy off here on the way to work, and said that the pup had been having diarreah and one of the stools looked to have blood in it. She would've taken him to the vet after work (2.30pm finish) but they ended up having a meeting and she didn't actually get away till 6pm. She got home and the pup was dead. So what do people think? I've never had any run ins with parvo myself so I'm not totally sure of what it's like, how quickly it kicks in, how quickly it can kill? Should she get vet to check pups body to find out whether it WAS parvo? Any suggestions as to what else could have caused it. Also if the cause was parvo, and the pup was around another who hasn't been immunised, if the other pup gets immunised straight away, should it be ok, or would it be too late to do anything? Also, because the pup vomited in my car, is it safe to have my dogs in my car? Both of my girls are fully up to date with their vaccinations, so they should be ok right?
  4. Gorgeous girls Liz So sorry to hear about your little male
  5. What a fantastic litter, plenty of females for you to pick from. Congratulations LizT And congrats to everybody else who has welcomed puppies this month
  6. As a lot of people have already said, it depends HOW they do things. I think somebody can manage having two or three different breeds or breeding two or three litters at a time ... but you also have to look at how the dogs are housed, cared for etc. For eg I know of a certain breeder who looks very good on paper (or website) but to me they just seem dodgy. They have a very nicely set out, professional website. They even mention on the website about not buying from puppy farms ... so all looks good. But they have 3 different breeds, about 50 dogs, that seem to be on a constant rotation of breeding, and the dogs don't seem to be very socialised because the people tend not to spend any real time with the dogs.
  7. I'm not sure becks, the owner just said that the vet spent quite a while scanning and couldn't find it. I'll let her know to get him to check ALL over. Also I rang my vet this morning to ask them about it, and they said sometimes not all scanners work on all chips, but a multi-scanner should. So I guess it depends what type of scanner the other vet has. I'll have to ask the new owner about that too. But as some of you have pointed out, the chip could have fallen out. Thanks so much for sharing your own experiences
  8. It's a little hard to give a black or white answer. I think there is a lot of difference between a puppy farm and a BYB. To me a puppy farm is someboy that has quite a number of dogs, and breeds them as often as possible for the sole purpose of making money, and I can (straight off the bat) think of two within our breed. But I guess I could be considered a BYB ... I'm registered, but I don't show (anymore), but my bitch is from a nice line, is a nice example of the breed and I have bred her once, and might breed her once more in about 18 months, but that will probably be the limit of puppies I'll have from her. So personally I would think that using the stud you have in mind, is probably ok.
  9. Oh good (and bad in a way) I'd always assumed that as long as they worked ok at first, then they would be fine. I didn't realise all this other stuff. Thanks everybody
  10. I've just had a new owner of one of my pups contact me because she took the puppy to the vet today to get his 12 week vaccinations and the vet done a check of his microchip while he was there and couldn't find it. He spent quite a bit of time looking for it, and even got another microchip out to test that the scanner was working (and the scanner was fine). I was present at my vets while all of the litter were chipped, so I saw all of them get their chips, and my vet tested each after they were done .... so I have no idea what has gone wrong. I know that I haven't done anything wrong, but apparently the new owner's vet made out like maybe I was dishonest and they should possibly assume that I hadn't given the puppy it's first vaccination either????? So now I feel really bad just because the missing microchip makes me look dodgy or something Has anybody else ever had a microchip not work despite being ok when first inserted? Can microchips "fail"?
  11. Cavaliers - litter of five - 3 males and 2 females Dani (pups' mum) refused to use the whelping box, so just gave birth on the floor of our lounge room. She also wouldn't lay down to whelp, so actually gave birth to each pup while in a semi sqatting position. After all pups were born, they were transferred to the whelping box, which was just Dani's crate which we converted for them. They slept on normal blankets and the room was heated. We also live on the central coast of Qld, so the weather never gets terribly cold anyway. They lived in the crate until about 3 weeks old, when we transferred them to a spare room just off our lounge, and they've had the run of that room ever since. So they are used to all the household noises - tv, kids, etc. Three of the pups have just left for their new homes. One is going next weekend. And one we are keeping
  12. That is dreadful Poor little puppy. And to think that he was the last of the litter to leave home ... at 5 weeks???? Gosh, did his litter mates even have their eyes open before they were fobbed off. Apart from making a complaint to the RSPCA about the breeders, make sure puppy is warm and has good food (probably soaked in puppy milk or warm water since he's so young). And worming etc, coz I'm sure his previous owners didn't care enough to do any of that. Poor little bub hasn't even had a chance to be socialised. Puppies need to spend time with their mum and litter mates because the playing, fighting etc teaches them what is normal.
  13. Congrats Chocolate and Karlmore And Snag ... I think I've fallen in love with your puppies lol and at rajacadoo getting a death stare from the mum-to-be
  14. Amen to not missing the poo and wee lol
  15. The one little tri male is mismarked on his face, but I will probably end up keeping him just as a pet. And I'm a little surprised nobody has shown interest in the blenheim male, because to me, he is the pick of the litter.
  16. Look at those full bellies lol Here are some photos of my little horrors (now 5 wks old)
  17. Congratulations Mercedes, your girl has done a great job And Monteba, so sorry to hear you lost the other male. Just devastating
