She looks like she has the body of a seal, or sea lion here, complete with rear flippers. She is a Merdog!

My cute Kibah this morning. She's still got a spring in her step, she's actually airborne here and in the very last pic. funny little girl. Feather hot on Tags tail. Run Taggy! Kibah & Tag, the ambush closing in the "kill"

How about showing us some pics from this little beauty. After my shots yesterday I wonder if I need this lens or the 70-200.
-
thanks for the encouragement. Yes they were tiny targets and it is infuriating to see beautifully focussed sawdust in so many! grrrrrr! but overall I am quite happy, these are by far the best action shots I've taken.

I listened and I am reasonably pleased with the results. I used the 75-300kit, tried to keep off being fully zoomed, although forgot a few times. ISO 800 so they're a bit grainy, yes I know I am supposed to say 'noisy'. Mostly TV 1/800 I think. centre focus and centre weighted metering too which I haven't used before. anyway have a look here http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...p;#entry3505389

I recognise that track! Was that at the whippet fun day or some other time?
-
wow, yours are amazing TD. Mine aren't as skillfully taken but these clouds were scattered all over the sky the other day, small, ragged and everywhere. I dont recall seeing them like that before. do you know what kind they are?

Can we see some pics????? Please!

I dont think the 400D has H. I've seen some amazing pics people have taken of whippets running head on but maybe they've got fancier cameras than me.
-
I cant get side on. It's at a different track which is long and narrow and has high black cyclone wire fencing with black shade cloth on it. I will have to get them front on. What's H?

This Sunday we're having a Whippet Racing training day. I wont be needed to drive the lure, it's a different set up so I am hoping to be able to take some photos of whippets running. So far most of my efforts have been dismal so I thought I'd ask here for some pointers. The whippets will be running towards me, head on, and very fast, about 50ks or more. In the past with my own whippets I can never seem to get the camera to refocus as they get closer. My camera, Canon 400D my lenses: a kit efs 18-55 non is a kit ef 75-300mm non is efs 17-85mm IS USM ef 50mm 1.4 USM. I am assuming the two highlighted ones will be the ones I need but feel free to suggest otherwise. I am also assuming I will need to have the camera on continuous shooting and AI Servo, is that right? If you can give me some advice on what to have the camera set on I would appreciate it. I cant get side on. It's at a different track which is long and narrow and has high black cyclone wire fencing with black shade cloth on it. I will have to get them front on.

Zippa, looky here! Hi everyone, I apologise for the short notice, I will blame the upheaval of the bushfires. Although our fun days are clearly that, fun, we notice alot of whippets aren't genuine chasers and this makes it difficult for us to plan proper races in the future. Some want to take out the opposition, which isn't good, and some think it's just a chance for a run and play but fairly quickly turn back and run to mummy or daddy. We are happy for people who's whippets want to do this to continue to come to the fun days but we also want to get some serious racing whippets! So, with that in mind, we are offering everyone who wants to get their whippets to properly chase the lure, a training day, this coming Sunday 15th starting 11am. This is quite different to our usual fun days. We want to get your whippet to chase the lure alone, the idea being they need to learn to go after the lure, not just run with other whippets. If you want your whippet to race in the future they need to learn to chase, not play. A good racing dog will ignore other dogs and chase the lure all the way to the catching pen. To do this we will use a drag lure. It's just a lure, often a plastic bag, attached to a string and pulled along the ground but there's little noise to frighten a whippet and the quick sometimes erratic movement often excites them to chase. It's open to whippets, belonging to both members and non members, cost per whippet, a gold coin. We are holding this for those whippets who need to learn, not the ones who already know what to do. We are holding the training day at the Park Orchards Slipping Track Stintons rd Park Orchards. Mel ref M35 B8. so dont go to Healesville!! You will need to bring your own lunch and refreshments, chair and water for your whippets. There is a barbeque area nearby. There isn't alot of shade there either so be aware of that if it looks like being a warm day. If you plan on coming can you send me an email just to give us an idea of numbers. many thanks Linda.

If I'd known yesterday or earlier today I might have gone, it's not far from me. Bungendore's a bit of a hike though.

It's great to hear your stories and see what you did, with the happy pics at the end being the outcome. I wanted to add my story if that is OK, I dont have alot of experience but mine is with a breed not known for swimmers, whippets, and I believe it was caused entirely by me, but I couldn't convince the vet of that. My whippet Kibah had a litter of 9. 7 survived but Kibah was in a bad way so I had to hand rear them. I had never had anything to do with puppies, a complete novice. I managed to foster 4 puppies off to another newly whelped whippet litter so had 3 to rear myself. After about day 4 I think the vet noticed 2 pups looked like swimmers, it was the first time I'd heard the term. She suggested I put rolled up towels, to form long lumps under the bedding to make them crawl and climb over it, I too had newspaper in the whelping box. I was doing 2 hourly bottle feeds around the clock and the poor little pups would struggle and cry so I gripped them firmly. I suddenly noticed as they struggled I'd hold tighter and this is how I held them. (Didn't have a newborn on hand so this little toy will suffice) I realised I was squashing their chests flat even though I thought I was being gentle, their little bones were so fine and soft. As soon as I became aware of what I was doing I changed how I held them to like this, and it only took 2, maybe 3 days before they were back to normal. I suspect if swimmer pups were held between 2 flat palms,(cant demonstrate cause no one to take the pic) for a few minutes several times a day they would come right as I firmly believe in my pups case it was entirely caused by my handling, I suppose that comes under environmental. Here's one of my swimmers as an adult, my own girl Feather, as you can see, her legs work just fine now.

start at photobucket, is that what you're doing? press upload, or bulk upload. I haven't got a Mac though, maybe it's different.

I took these pics of a friends beautiful cats, brother and sister moggies from the pound. I stuffed up the settings on the camera, it was while I was escaping the bushfires and I was tired and not thinking too clearly, wish I'd done a better job, would've been a great chance for some lovely pics. Oh well these are the best, not too clear. Hopefully next time I will put a bit more thought into them. this is the boy, Rascal with his lovely green eyes and his sister Cheeky with her stunning blue eyes

Ripley those photos are hilarious, and well done Ruger with the caption, it's perfect. I reckon you could turn that into a funny card.

thanks for that, I'd never even looked into or thought about buying a second battery but you're right, they're cheap in the scheme of things.
