  1. Elfin - keep following up with Bayside, i've had dealings with them in the past, including going to court to be a witness for them against a couple of dangerous dogs. They have gone that far before, they should be able to follow up further with this. A report to the police as well won't hurt, and advise the council that you will be doing this. And if your still getting stone walled, PM and i'll put you in touch with someone who may be able to give you some legal advise. Hope your old boy is all right. Sadly i don't go to this beach much any more, despite only living 5 mins away from it, as the only times i could go it would be way too busy for my dogs and me to have some fun without running into trouble. I miss the days of being able to go in the middle of the day midweek!
  2. The Siberians have to sitting amongst the strongest prey driven breeds. They are a breed that evolved surviving on their own for many months of the year, thus their hunting/survival instinct is extrodinary! Some of course are worse than others - but as a general rule don't expect them to treat anything fast moving, fluffy, furry or feathery as anything but possible dinner. We tell this to all potential owners, and can recount many many tales of animals that have come to an unfortunate end due to our dogs.
  3. Yes i was going to say the Siberian specialty on the 9th of ocotber would be a good starting point. There will be lots of committee members there, who may not be showing and will be able to spend a bit more time discussing the breed with you. Plus alot more Siberians to view than normal!
  4. Lol - i've had a singed sibe tail or two in the past....i've always just trimmed the singed ends off. You can leave it or trim it, but don't trim down to the healthy roots.
  5. Yup Bag Balm is an udder cream. If you go hunting on Sled Dog Central (www.sleddogcentral.com) you will find lots of links to sledding outfitters and many various products.
  6. The best solution is to have dogs with naturally tough pads lol However simple things can help - make sure the surface you run your dogs on is good for their pads. We do very minimal work on concrete/roads. Apart from being bad for their pads, it's very bad for their joints. Whenever possible make sure you can working on a surface with a bit of give (dirt/sand/grass/snow). You can use products such as bag balm on cracked and sore pads. Also if you dogs have naturally tender feet you can look at using booties - check out sites such as www.dogbooties.com Hope this helps.
  7. Doesn't sounds like the person has any right to claim any money from you. Autopsy doesn't show a pre existing condition, therefore there is nothing that you can be held responsible for. Very sad if this dog died to being kept in unsuitable conditions - however that was not your fault, and nothing can show that you are responsible for her death, thus no costs you should pay. Tell the person to go away. Obviously they care more about the money than the dog, so thats the level of consideration you should return to them.

  9. I always buy 18kg or 22kg bags. With only 3 dogs, and two different foods, i takes a good few months to go through all this. I always open the bag, put some in an air tight barrel and then seal the bag back up. I've never had food go off doing this.
  10. I've seen a lab or two out on the track at times
  11. There is a heap of KC going around at the moment. And we are finding that it has a longer than normal incubation period - we have dogs only showing signs up to 2 weeks later, but this is from dogs from various states who all attended the one event. So we know where ground 0 is, and the incubation period has been quite long in some dogs.
  12. But of course that means that if you only mate your "non pure bred" dogs (be they of a single breed or cross breeds) your not in violation of the code of ethics??? Makes a mockery of everything we believe in. Why can't our CC's have balls and rules/laws, not just a code of ethics with huge loop holes!
  13. Where ever they want - usually at the end of the bed :D Otherwise crates on the back porch in winter, or in their runs in nicer weather.
  14. Geez...and my train was going past there just before 10... Good thing i'm at the other end of the city...
  15. I have used this a number of times. Recommended to me by a friend who works in the international banking/money game! http://www.tranzfers.com
  16. I believe there is an age past where the canine council will require a vet certificate to say the bitch is healthy enough to be bred, but thats it. The canine council can't stop you breeding a bitch just because it turns a certain age. 8 years is still a good healthy age to breed a bitch in my breed, especially if they have been working all their lives and are in top physical condition.
  17. Not a clue how much it would cost you on BARF. As i said, i feed a good quality dry, and supplement with meat - my dogs always get meat with their dry. Why don't you just add some chicken or beef mince to his food each day. If you are doing this i would feed 1 - 1 1/2 cups of dry plus the meat. Your boy looks great in that photo! You should bring him along to the sled races
  18. Whoa!!! Firstly you are feeding your Siberian way too much! No Sibe needs 3 cups of dry food. Depending on the quality of food and his level of exercise, i would be feeding him about 1 1/2 cups, 2 at the max - and thats only if your not supplementing with any meat. Of course he's skipping meals and taking so long to eat what you give him, it's way too much!!! Siberians don't need much food. As for his weight - why are you trying to put more weight on him??? They aren't big dogs, and they certainly don't weigh much. Has your boys increase from 21kg to 25 kg been muscle or fat??? I'm guessing if your basing his weight gain on food alone, that it's fat. How tall is your boy? (measure from the ground to the top of the shoulders). To give you an indication of correct weight in well muscled healthy fit siberians, my males are the following 21 3/4" tall, extremely well muscled, weighs 23.5kgs 23 1/4" tall, young male, good muscle, weighs 24.5kgs my bitches weight even less (from 17 - 20kgs) My guess is your worrying over nothing with your boy and his weight. Cut his food down, he'll eat quicker, he'll be just fine and you won't be hanging around waiting for him to eat food he just doesn't need. Looking at the photo of your boy, he's gorgeous, but he certainly doesn't need to put on any more weight. Are you able to speak to his breeder in regards to what you have been feeding him, and what a correct diet from him should be?
  19. Sounds more like you have a dog who has you wrapped around his paw! Choose a good quality dry food, and stick to it. Ours are fed Eagle Pak (power for the working dogs, natural for the rest). All our dogs get meat with their dry food, be it beef or chicken mince, beef chunks, tuna/sardines, chicken frames etc. If your Siberian is being fussy, after 5 minutes pick up the food. Offer it to him again the next day. Do not pander to him. They will not starve themselves, he will eat eventually. Saying the you have tried nearly every dried food available suggests to me that that if your boy turns his nose up at it, you go out and buy another brand to try. This is not the way to getting your boy to eat.
  20. I prefer an email I don't mind phone calls but quite often people catch me at a time when i can't talk for long, or at all, and so i'll ask them to email me with their details and more info etc, and i'll go from there. Also means i can reply and include detailed handouts on the breed etc, much easier to do that via email than on the phone!
  21. Are you able to contact your boys breeder and request for help? Sounds to me like you have a very normal adolescent siberian husky with NO respect for you, and very little discipline. I wish you were closer - i'd help you in a heart beat. I suggest giving Karen Bryant of Asryn Siberians a call (her details can be found in the breeder listings). She is a very good trainer, and having Siberians, will be able to understand the problems your encountering. Here is a tip though - bring him inside on lead. Make him remain calm, lay at your feet while you watch tv etc. He needs to learn that it's calm time when inside - not play and zoomie time! By tossing him out after 15 minutes of uncontrolable behaviour is not teaching him anything.
  22. OK coming from Lihuk he def would have always had other canine companionship. Sounds like he come in a round about way to you for sure, but nice that he was able to come and replace the pup you sadly lost. What is his name? Photos are a must - come and visit us in the sibe thread in the breed forum! My dogs are on either power or natural. Fish bones are fine - just make sure the fish is raw. We give tinned sardines, and also whole fresh sardines and other fish. Such a shame that you can't keep the dogs near each, he will def be feeling lonely, poor bugger!
  23. I know of a siberian OS who went blind suddenly. Prior to going blind he was a top sled dog. Once he went blind his owners thought that they would have to retire him, but he just wasn't happy sitting on the side lines. He's now back in harness, and running so well that he's made their A team!!! http://www.kel-im.com/kelimsiberians/quest.html
  24. Hi Ruski, Have you spoken to the dogs breeder? Have they been able to give you any advice? If the dog has always had the company of other dogs, then unfortuantly i don't think you are going to be able to resolve this issue. Siberians are pack animals, and many of them always need either human or canine company. They get very lonely on their own. Why does he need to be seperated from his canine companion? If she is in heat, just ensue that one of them is crated and they are under supervision. As for the food - bones won't put weight on him, so i wouldn't worry about him eating them. Have you tried chiken mince? That isn't too expensive. Our dogs get eagle pack (1 cup) plus chicken mince (large handful) and that is enough to keep them in condition. Or you can tried tined tuna/sardines mixed with dry food. No unusual for your dogs appetitite to decrease while your bitch is in heat - he's pining for her. These are all questions your breeder should be able to answer. Where did you get your boy from? Regards, Sophia Snofall Siberians
