  1. We have solid hardwood timber floors. The type of wood is Greybox - it has one of the hardest janka ratings. For example, Tasmanian Oak is a very soft wood, easily scratches, yet it is the most common used. We have no scratches or heel marks or anything. Best flooring! OH it might also make a difference what polish you have. If you have a gloss - scratches will show more. I have a semi gloss, so its shiny/matte. Not super glossy. Goodluck with your choice!
  2. Get the Cavalier if you want: * A dog that will give you non stop loving, follow you around everywhere and basically just want to be with you and cuddle all the time. * A dog that will want to sleep most of the time, but still likes a bit of a play * A dog that loves going for daily walks, but will not make a fuss or display bored behaviour when they dont get a walk. They are just as happy to laze around, as long as you are there. * A dog that gets along with all other animals , is fearless but is not vicious at all * A dog that is easy to housetrain * A dog that is easy to groom - just brush a few times a week * A dog that would be great to have around children This is my experience after owning a Cavalier for 8 months now - he is the best little guy! So obviously I am biased, but I say Cavalier from a reputable, registered breeder.
  3. I recently went to Japan and the Dachshund was very popular over there. The most popular colour was a blue merle. I'm guessing that this is not a colour found here? The puppies in the pet shops over there are so so tiny, they must continually breed the runts with runts, very sad. That was where I saw a majority of these blue merle Dachshunds.
  4. italmum - I really feel for you, after you have explained your situation it sounds like you would be so committed to the dog and your family would have lots of love to give. I don't think breeders should base their decision on whether you have kids or not, rather it should be based on what is best for the dog. Kids or not doesn't mean the be all and end all surely?! Don't give up on getting a Cavalier from an excellent registered breeder, it will be worth the wait. My cavalier has the sweetest, loving nature, I can see when I have kids, there will be no problem. He loves everyone and is fearless. Temperament and health are excellent. My breeder was Coatesville, she is listed on DOL in Victoria. She has had a few adults for sale this year, maybe call her up? Actually, if I was you, I would go through all the Vic breeders on this site and ring them up. It can't hurt. If it makes you feel better, If I was a breeder - I would give you a pup! Goodluck !
  5. http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/inform...o-romagnolo.asp Here is the link for the Lagotto - yes they are non shedding.
  6. I'm no expert but I think a Lagotto would be worth looking into. Have a look in the Breed pages on this forum. Good on you for convincing your friend!
  7. Wow!! Unbelievable. They are both just gorgeous, goodluck with everything. more pics please!
  8. He is just adorable and looks like he just wants to play and have fun all day!
  9. My little man was just done yesterday. He just slept the whole day/night and was basically out of it. Today he still isnt 100% and has been licking the area but not excessively. he also had a hernia repaired, the hernia stiches are non dissolvable and I have to take him back to the vet in 10-14 days. His castration stiches are dissolvable which is great. My vet gave me a take home after care sheet, which was good. I also got a desexing Certificate and he has a tattloo in his left ear - looks like some black spots. I felt sooo guilty picking him up, I was so nervous I thought I was going to faint! How embarassing would that have been. LOL I paid $150 for the desex and $40 for hernia.
  10. They are all just the sweetest looking little angels!!
  11. OMG how precious!!! Give her a kiss from me.
  12. My cavalier loves to eat dirt, twigs and grass. He has a very balanced diet of a barf pattie with Royal Canin dry plus some days he has sardines, yogurt, eggs, raw bones. I think it is because he is 6 months old and still exploring the world around him and having some fun. I am hoping he will grow out of it as I do worry about what he puts in his mouth. How old are your friends cavs?
  13. I am vegetarian and I would never put my animals on vegetarian diets - that is insane rubbish!!!!
  14. Goodluck, I think it will end up fine for you. I have two indoor cats, 3 and 4 year old who have never been around dogs. Previously their food bowls were on the laundry floor. I have now moved them onto the laundry bench (dont use it for anything anyway!) The water bowl is on the floor still and they all drink out of it no problems. I am also lucky in that my Cavalier pup is not at all interested in their litter or the items in the litter!! So he doesnt go near it now. At the start he ate a few pieces of the actual litter(its the recycled paper one, so pretty safe), but within a week he got over it. Now, my ragdoll cat is best friends with Arnie, they chase each other and have fun. My moggy doesnt want to know him, and this is just her personality, she doesnt really like anyone except for me, she barely even tolerates my Ragdoll!! She was a rescue and has anxiety issues! LOL Poor girl. Goodluck, it can be stressful but fun at the same time. The cats will get over it eventually.
  15. Good on you for coming to DOL and taking the advice from the knowledgable members here! I am a newbie myself, got my Cavalier only a few months ago from an ethical registered breeder and could not be happier. This is what you support when you buy from a petstore: I'm sure you would be able to get one before Christmas from a good breeder. I wasnt on a waiting list for mine. When I was ready, I searched breeders on here and rang a few and was able to get a puppy that weekend. Goodluck with it all and keep us updated!
  16. aww he is adorable! A new best buddy for your children - how sweet!
  17. In regards to how long the dog can go through the night - when my boy was 10 weeks I would take him 11;30am then 3am then 7 am. From about 14 weeks he has gone through the night with no accidents. So I take him out at between 11 - midnight when we go to bed, then take him out straight away in the morning at 7-8am. I think the key is we feed him at 6pm and no food at all after, (maybe just some treats in his kong), then no water after around 8pm. If they are not taking anything in, they will not be inclined to go. In regards to crating, I keep mine in the crate at night (hmmm, now he has moved to being on our bed though, because we wanted him there!), he is used to the create so when I drive I keep him in there and he just lays down, no barking or anything. I am still learning and its such a fun process. Goodluck with it all!
  18. I can't help, but just wanted to say sorry for your loss, that is so terrible.
  19. Judy - Real grass didnt even enter my mind! LOL
  20. Hey guys, Just to update, so far Arnie has been fine. Been toileting like normal and is his usual happy self. Thanks for the advice. xo
  21. Thanks for the replies. I will definetly be watching to see if he goes to the toilet normally. I think this has turned me off giving chicken necks at all, unless totally smashed up.
  22. I just gave my 13 week old Cavalier a raw chicken neck for the first time. I was supervising him and he was chewing, then all of a sudden the whole thing was gone!!! Is he going to be ok?? Can anything bad happen? Should I smash it up next time?
  23. Just rang Bunnings, they sell fake grass by the metre. Starting price is $49.
