  1. It can also be found in wild animals. Given that you can get it from dog hair, I err on the safe side.
  2. Sometimes avoiding medicine leads to more problems though.... Regarding wormers, I would always worm because hyatids (sp) can be fatal to humans and can be dormant for 10+ years. I vaccinate every three years at the moment because this is required for our sports. I think the value of sport and training outweighs the vacs. Dogs would need some carbs surely? I'm not talking grain, but all veges contain some carbs. A carrot is a nice low cal treat. My advice is: - healthy diet (whatever the dog does well on. My boy doesn't cope well with 100% raw and I'm not going to make him suffer do that I can feel "superior"). - exercise (both aerobic and strength building) walking is not enough to build core strength - hind leg awareness exercises, balance balls etc - mental exercise - mandatory for health. Lots if games (scent detection, find the target hidden in the house, free shaping ) just 5 mins of this every day or two makes a huge difference. - sport - we do agility. My boy will compete but my girl never will. I still do it with her as it keep her fit and we both enjoy it. - visit the vet when things aren't right. - physio if they do sport and when they get older. Relax and enjoy them. A stressed person leads to a stressed dog. Have fun, laugh "with" them and remember they'd much rather muck around with you than have the latest gadget/collar/toy.
  3. Would definitely help with relationship building, training is fun and building drive.
  4. Can the " not mals" compete in IPO?
  5. Rough play sounds like an excuse from someone with no clue at a dog park- not a professional!
  6. Thanks - is 500 dogs a big entry for a nationals?
  7. Whst if every dog you bred was returned at once ? What if the dog didn't cope with being kennelled? Surely that isn't in the best interest of the dog ? Do we expect breeders to have lots of $ stashed away of there is a mass return? I expect breeders to do their best to regime dogs and help their breed rescue (might be fostering, money, fundraising, admin for a site etc) . It doesn't have to be much but I do believe if you breed you need to contribute something back to dog welfare.
  8. I believe that a long coated mal would still be registered as a mal. Huski's wisdoms had two long coated pups and I believe they're considered to be mals . I think coat type only comes into it if there has been a mating between types.
  9. No insurance company will cover it as it is an existing condition. Sorry I don't know what surgeons are best gor this condition. Was he diagnosed by a specialist or a local vet?
  10. Pro tip: if you're trying to be polite, maybe ditch the angry face.... The OP and nek made spelling mistakes. While most posts weren't angry , only one poster needed to point out the issue. Three people posting about it just makes the OP feel bad. People misspelt rare breed names. It happens and it isn't really such a big deal that we need to pull out ok' angry face.
  11. How do you celebrate and engage with him in the ring when he's finished? Do you do a little dance, look him in the eye? I thought my boy to value the leash ( by saying leash time every time I clip it on and give him a treat). At the end of a run I smile, look at him, tell him he was a good boy and say "leash time". He walks with me to the leash because he associated it with reward. I've noticed a few people with dogs that run out. They look stressed as the dog runs towards the last obstacle and it turns into a cycle.
  12. I agree - definitely not fine boned and seem to meet the standard to my untrained eye but they still look healthy and like they could do a job.
  13. That would be different then for sure. But with my guys, they knew what they had to do & self rewarded :) Even if a dog knows the weaves, it can be demoralising (for some dogs) to keep repeating until they get it right . I know that, with my boy, we both do better if we keep it fast and fun. It is rare to see a handler make their dog repeat something without expressing any disappointment to the dog (they're experts at body language). My boy went through a period of popping out near the end but a trainer pointed out that I was turning my head to look at him ( to check for a pop) and this was making him focus on me and he popped out. I now don't look at him at all and just run and he hasn't popped out since.
  14. I'm in two minds about the trespassing. I don't agree with harassment but I do think that she exposed some vile puppy farmers that the RSPCA and councils had approved . There was one in feeling that they broke into and took pics - dead dogs, injured dogs etc. if they hadn't done that, these dogs would still be suffering. They have the pics to a local paper and that shamed the RSPCA into action.
  15. I'm a bit surprised at your response to the IP HW as you've always posted a pic of a lab in working condition and it was lean (and beautiful). It was a yellow lab and I think it was holding a bird. It wasn't a thin or fine boned dog - broad but lean. I'm not a breeder but that doesn't mean I know nothing about dogs . Sometimes we can't see the faults of our own dogs due to rose coloured glasses.
  16. Yip. I don't want existing dogs killed, but I'm not keen on this breed being introduced to Australia. If it is the one I'm thinking of , then human aggression is in the breed standard.
  17. This was the delta program too - not the Dogs Vic one.
  18. In Vic they have assessment days for therapy dogs - no training required. I just looked up "delta therapy dogs@ and went from there.
  19. Carers and sick leave is normally lumped into one bucket - 10 days. You can take it to go to funerals, look after sick family members or take dick leave. I think it is reasonable to take one or two of these days if a pet dies. (Ie they are not extra days). BTW, the whole story is a best up. The mining company won't name the union and the unions have said they haven't asked for it .
  20. I think those are people who don't have dogs that really resource guard :-). . I could say the same thing but I'm lucky I don't have dogs that do this .
  21. Try sourcing raw honey - not the stuff you buy at the supermarket that has been peocessed
  22. I've gotten about $6000 from them without hassle? That included getting Lucy's blood sent off to the US and physio for fergs. The first claim took a while but it had been smooth sailing after that. My premiums are the same and they renewed a while ago - but my dogs are small do I think they're lower risk.
