  1. Sorry for the FB link, couldn't find it elsewhere https://www.facebook.com/notes/nsw-police-force/toddler-injured-in-dog-attack-bradbury/10150674095751394
  2. So many of us do Tibbies. Sadly this little spate seemed to be timed with general specials, when folks' attention was firmly fixed on the in-ring activities.
  3. After several thefts of wallets and personal belongings on Saturday at the Canberra dog showgrounds, a timely reminder to show folk to watch out for their belongings. Sad to think it could be other exhibitors, and that we may not all be watching each other's backs. As at least one credit card was used fraudulently out of the immediate area on the same day it seems it wasn't locals which is very disappointing. Please folk try and keep an eye on your things, and keep an eye out for your dog show neighbours and friends.
  4. Hugs to you both Lily'smum. Aspirin can be given to dogs with safety. If you google it you will find dose rates. If it's a temporary injury or inflammation it may help. Or if you need a little time to sort out your next step it may give some relief in the meantime.
  5. OH&S issue for human assistants - short stool etc should be available for sitting on as back may suffer from much crouching/kneeling etc during whelping.
  6. Today a lady came up at a show and said "Pardon my ignorance, but are they Borzoi?" My answer "That's not ignorant at all!! Yes they are indeed!!" It is amazing when people know, just lovely. :)
  7. Definitely need a second opinion. You should have been given some decent information, at least some places you could research, and a proper description of the issue, with a correct grading.
  8. Jump on google - type in "luxating patella" and do some reading on the condition, so you can feel a little bit more prepared and in control, and know what you'd like to ask of your vet and of the breeder whn that time comes. Here is a basic start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxating_patella
  9. You're right Melstar, the breeder should be informed if it is genetic. But I know that vets sometimes aren't quite as knowledgeable on breeding and genetics as they may seem. Yes, this can be genetic. But have other potential factors been ruled out? Do you need a second or specialist opinion? I know it's stressful, but take a breath and figure out what's what, like you say - without guns blazing. :)
  10. Unfortunately animals are not like cars or computers or appliances and guarantees and warranties are not so applicable. Chat to the breeder without hosility or accusation, and see where to go from there. Unfortuanely it is not uncommon to buy a pup for breeding/showing etc and have it not turn out. Nature is a fickle thing and despite best efforts and intentions sometimes things don't turn out as hoped for.
  11. You mean a luxating patella? The patella is the kneecap, luxating means it moves about or dislocates. It can be genetic, environmental, due to a dog being overweight whilst growing, or the result of a trauma or knock.
  12. I thought they were English/Scottish?? You know, from the border region of England and Scotland? You learn something every day.
  13. Is it just me seeing lots of Koolie in those ears and eyes??
  14. Best Australian Breed?? Border Collie?? Umm?
  15. Any local council inaction or corruption allegations don't change the laws. Each state has it's own companion animals legislation, which local councils are usually empowered to enforce. Whether they do that effectively or otherwise doesn't change the laws themselves.
  16. This is the NSW Companion Animals Act: http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/caa1998174/ Part 4 deals with control of cats. Pretty straightforward, section 32 is a but more involved and relates to cats entering other lands, and being a threat to other animals etc.
  17. They're very cute indeed. :D I'd guess by size they will grow to be kelpie/ koolie sized? The ears look a bit koolie to me too... But neither the GSD nor the Husky breed have brindle. So if they were a cross of just those two breeds they could not be brindle. GSD crossed with a breed that has brindle can throw brindle, certainly.
  18. People need educating. If the buying stops these practices will too.
  19. Not in NSW. There are rules about cats being identified and not a nuisance, but not confinement laws.
  20. I find it pretty awful that some people always look for someone else to blame, and can turn any tragedy into a money making venture.
  21. Having re-read the NSW sections, I think the Council would have a difficult time making a Dangerous Dog order. Don't forget that notice of intention to make such an order is given. This is the owner's time to object to the order. As the Act has a lawful defence to an attack when the victim animal is tresspassing in the dog's yard, at s.16(2)(b) - it would be an obvious objection. As for unreasonable aggression, it doesn't take an unreasonable amount of force for an average dog to kill a cat. One grab can certainly do it. And a few grabs or bites, even shaking, would be hard pushed to be labelled unreasonable. That is the purpose of subsection 16(2)(a), to allow dor reasonable dog behaviour within it's own environment. The outcome for the trespassing animal is not necessarily a consideration in whether the level of aggression shown was unreasonable. edit for clarity...
  22. After last week at the Royal I needed a sign!! Like Diva and Pavlova, mine is: Borzoi. B-O-R-Z-O-I Russian Wolfhound. Yes, wolves. And hares, foxes etc. No, not as big as the Irish ones. No they don't need much grooming. Yes, they do look a little bit like Rough Collies, but they're different.
  23. Best of luck with the surgery, it will be great to see how much difference it makes to her. Jess do you have your collars for sale online? I couldn't find them... I'm terribly addicted to lovely sighthound collars... :D Another good fundraiser can be ebay auctions. Sometimes people don't have spare cash but items they can donate.
