  1. Think of a breeder (greyhounds spring to mind as they are so frequently travelling - but any breeder can have dogs travelling about) having a dog come home from a trip, or a new dog arrive, and it carries in something like parvo or coronavirus on it's feet or fur, from a pound rescue sharing it's transport. The heartbreak and cost of these infections walking into a breeding kennel cannot be estimated, whole litters of pups gone etc. People involved in rescue need to be aware of the wider community that can be seriously affected by neglecting quarantine and potentially spreading disease.
  2. Like SSM said, optimum age differs with breed. In mine as well it would be very rare and not a good thing to breed at less than three years for a maiden litter, and that would be in an early maturing individual. Four or five would be more normal, at physical maturity. Maiden litters are still possible at around 8 or so in fit and healthy bitches. This girl is a lab?
  3. I do think that shelters or rescues sticking blindly to their flawed breed descriptions can be unfair to purchasers/adopters. I recall when I worked in a shelter a tiny Pom female coming in, heavily in whelp. She had two pups within days, which were subsequently advertised as purebred Pomeramians, and generted much interest, and lists of people wanting to adopt. All well and good. Except the babies were much bigger than Poms at only 6 weeeks old, and clearly not purebred, heavy heads, big bone etc. So it's anyone's guess how big they ended up. So almost false advertising. It's like the story of the shelter that was convinced they had an Azawakh a couple of years ago, or the grizzle/domino sort of colored crossbreds that get called Saluki crosses when it is hghly unlikely. staff get keen on googling breeds, which is fine. But if they advertise and sell dogs as a certain breed I think it's unfair. The habit people have of identifying breeds in crosses by colouration really bugs me. If it's black masked tan its a Mastiff x, even if t's less than knee high etc etc. Colour genetics is hideously complicated business. You need to discount colour and have a look at some structural features which are often a little more conclusive. edit to add - anyone with a red/sable and white Borzoi will tell you how painfully often they are called, with great authority, " a Lassie".
  4. I got mine for Sunday in the post yesterday. No breakdown though, just the number cards.
  5. No one seems keen to discuss the practice of putting poundies straight nto transport. I personally find the practice abhorrent. I'm aware that the company is agreeing to do so. But are their other customers aware of the risks that may be posed to their dogs?? I would be horrified if I had a dog transported by a company and it was exposed to disease. Any exposed dogs may then go on to expose others at their destination.
  6. Oh Shezz I'm so sorry for you and your family. I hope he recovers quickly and doesn't lose his confidence around dogs. I totally agree that the owners should know enough about their dogs to not bring them into your space, where your children are, if they are not 100% safe. Onus is on them and not you, when they approach your kids' space like that. Hugs to your little one, he must have been terrified.
  7. But then again someone I know was recently given a solid count of three from ultrasound, from their reliable vet. The bitch whelped 8...

  10. One that goes out of their way to not allow their dogs to negatively impact upon others?
  11. :happydance2: :champagne: :happydance2: At 14 month old, what an achievement!!
  12. No info (unless I missed it on a quick scan...) as to whether ANKC breeder registration will be accepted. It seems it should be, as RSPCA should be encouraging those who wish to breed doing so under the umbrella of the ANKC. We have more than enough splinter groups, would be nice to see some functional co-operation for a change.
  13.  Yes indeed! If I ask my teenage dogs to do something they don't roll their eyes or huff off into their bedrooms!!

  15. No advice, just hugs to both you and your lovely Deanna. And of course, fingers crossed for a swift recovery.
  16. You need to meet some Borzoi Weasels! :D Some might not like hugging, but the vast majority do... Maybe they're anti-dogs in regard to hugging?? I have kids, and dogs, and they are very different. I am firmly of the belief that my dogs like being dogs. I do call my puppies babies, but don't mean it in a human sense at all (I don't much like human babies, but adore my puppies!!!)
  17. Imports? Or done medically. There are forms to be filled out to include docking on a dog's registration. It requires certification by the docking vet. I had a borzoi pup born with a broken and hanging tail last year (caught up in umbilical cord), it was docked to one third. Even though no-one in their right mind would choose to dock a borzoi, we still had to do all the paperwork to be lawfully covered. He is a stunning boy, and had he been from a breed where a docked tail would not have caused serious detriment in the ring he would have been shown.
  18. All this talk of brushing coats before washing has reminded me to pop in and say - for silky coats, don't brush knots and dirt out dry as the coat will break and split. For tangles in silky coats I would soak the tangle in conditioner (either straight or watered down depending on product and knot severity) before washing. Then tease or brush/comb the knot out. For little knots in silky coats, wash as normal without brushing, after shampooing condition the coat, and brush it through before rinsing.
  19. We'll be in Hillsborough on the 8th. Good luck to all at the Afghan National, we need photos!
  20. The low nutritional content is the point, when it becomes important to slow growth. It's a temporary thing. You don't slow growth down with high nutritional content.
  21. Off label use is illegal without a govt issued permit or vet supervision/prescription, for good reason.
  22. I'm sure she'd love them! Will pm you my email if that's ok.
  23. She should really be on a course of vit K, by the time she shows symptoms it may be too late. Can you check with your vet? Vit K should be given for two weeks after confirmed ingestion.
  24. Oh, and working ferrets I'm not sure but used to know a contact in nearby Goulburn. Can try and track him down if you like?
