  1. Thanks Janba. :) I can post my old pics from photobucket but can't save new ones, such a pain! Yes coat can be bred for, and I'm the first to frown at coat that impedes a dog's lifestyle, looks or movement. I hate it with a passion. But the different levels of care provided show dogs change it too, and shouldn't be overlooked when comparing. I know in coated breeds some dogs may spend a few years in full coat, maybe living on groomed lawns and indoors etc, and when finished showing they may have more access to tearing about through bush or being clipped off. This is my old afghan in full pet/working coat as we lived on a farm and he spent much time in rugged countryside chasing rabbits etc. His siblings that were in the ring had undamaged, full length coat which looked much longer and drapier like you commonly see in the ring. So environment was a huge factor, not necessarily genetics. The only point being that broad generalisations are sometimes missing important points. :)
  2. Those poor model citizens... having nasty police invading their home...
  3. Yep. If the game / prey stalls, especially the peeing on things, that's a biiiig part of it.
  4. My pack will "play bow" like that if they have a feral cat or possum cornered in our yard... I don't think I need to elaborate on what it turns into. Have you ever seen a cat "play" with a still alive mouse? It doesn't mean it wants a lasting relationship. Play vs Prey...
  5. When I was young, just left home, and looking for my first dog I only wanted a borzoi or an afghan. I couldn't find any borzoi, had never heard of the canine council, and found my afghan via an ad in the Trading Post. I was screened as a buyer, which was also something I'd never heard of, and the breeder provided full support and stayed in contact. Nearly 20 years on I still know and am friends with that breeder, and have since become involved in lots of other dog stuff. It was a doorway to a bigger dog world for me...
  6. It may well be that people who are trigger happy when it comes to roaming and potentially dangerous dogs have seen first hand the results of it and have zero tolerance. ;)
  7. What if the area is unconfined? If she tries to evade and does the bolt... Maybe I'm just used to fast running dogs...
  8. ANKC registered purebreds should be waving their flag wherever people are looking for pets. That doesn't mean they get sold to just anyone, but why shouldn't they be just as accessible to every pet loving person?
  9. Seconds in and rolling my eyes. On my ipad I can't re post pics, but as far as the afghan is concerned, try googling "Zardin" from 1902 to see a more correct version of then and now. The afghan pictured from 1915 is a "plains" or "Bell Murray" type of afghan, and the modern breed is descended largely from the "mountain" type of which Zardin was a typical early representative. Bell Murrays still exist but are different in more ways than just coat. All to easy to fit in with extremist views when you use selectively ignorant photographic examples. Plus the beginning bit?? Where they claim dogs were divided up according to geography in the 19rh century? Another example of ignorance. Many, many dog breeds have been maintained, especially in their geographical regions, for centuries, if not milennia in some instances.
  10. Dear oh dear. I again refer to the human analogy I posted earlier. Anyone blaming the victim of violence for what happened needs to have a solid think about it. I have personally shot and seen shot several attacking dogs in the act, let me think... nope, no pitbulls, but nope, no hesitation, and no blaming the victim animal or it's owners. Hmm, husky, jrt, labrador, boxer, crossbreds, maremma... Breed is immaterial. Actions are what cause intervention. And decisive intervention can mean the difference between further injury and damage being caused.
  11. Anyone can. It just depends on how much and what sort of information they have in relation to it as to how much investigation/action can be undertaken.
  12. I have four kids, but I'm not a great fan of ther people's. My kids have been raised to be respectful and have manners. They're not perfect or robots, but they're certainly not obnoxious monsters. However we often seem to end up aquiring extras, neighbourhood kids, at community functions or dog shows etc and I hate being put in the position of having to provide for, control and look out for extras I haven't put my hand up for. Ask and give me a reasonable time frame and I will probably not have an issue keeping an eye on them. But if they muck up they will be told off and sent back asap. I've had strange kids invade our camp at shows more times than I can count. I have also had things go missing, things thrown at my own kids or dogs, and been asked for food and to accompany these unknown small folk to the toilet! Grr. Much as I wouldn't like people to fob their dogs off on me unannounced. Just cause I have kids, I don't want to share other people's.
  13. It used to be the norm with Wedgetails, lines of them strung up along fences...
  14. Yet although they can take this into account to refuse him bail, due to the potential for re-offending, they can't imprison him on a profile. Lets hope when he is released, which will be sooner rather than later, he is under some strict supervision... But the system falls down so often.
  15. Famed dog whisperer?? I hope the poor pooch stays safe from traffic etc.
  16. I too was wondering about entry fees. Not that I wanted to bug the poor secretary about it, but it was something I. hadn't experienced. I can imagine a logistic nightmare if they were to be returned!
  17. Yes but I wouldn't risk it if she was standing.
  18. Yep! Now I only have to hope the roads stay un-flooded so I can get there!!
  19. Bottom line is, the dogs are at fault, for how much the viewers don't know. The cop has an immediate duty of care to the people and animals that are in fear of those dogs, whether we in our safe houses watching think they are right or wrong to fear. Good on him. I would have done the same, whatever it took to stop those dogs escaping and continuing that behaviour. An aggressive dog with a face full of OC spray, running loose around a neighbourhood is not an option. Neither is those dogs running off around the neighbourhood while said cop stands back to wait for some other more pleasant approach. That is not his duty. He did his duty.
  20. Nothing new on Ozshow yet Inevitablue. I'll keep an eye on it and let you know. It does sound like they will be trying to go ahead, even if that means moving it to Bungendore.
  21. Tarago's ground would be pretty soggy by now... I'm not as familiar with Braidwood. I'm starting to doubt it will happen now that Boorowa is off.
  22. Could he be something relatively simple like a working breed type x with a scruffy terrier type? Don't get caught up thinking terrier cross means small, plenty of terrier breeds are bigger than people imagine.
  23. We're all very good at assuming things around here. Do we know that the Beagle is a resident here? That it lives on a chain?? What if family are visiting and he's been tied up to give him some outdoor time while keeping him safe from wandering?? Could they be in the process of rebuilding a fence and have him tied up in the meantime? And we're happy to pass judgement about his quality of life? Hardly the point is it. His life that day would've no doubt been of a much higher quality had be not been attacked unprovoked by wandering ratbags. All of which goes to show how little is known of the entire situation, and how many assupmptions and judgements are being made. Anyone who is publicly stating that this cop is out of line is criticising his professionalism. Are you all prepared to ring or write to his PD and offer your learned opinions on why you know his actions were so far out of line? On why you know better than he did with all your training, experience and all your background information on this incident? If not, I would expect you could hold your opinions and not be so slanderous.
  24. No way he's Dandie, there's less than a handful of breeders in Aust and not many more dogs. He really looks to me like a classic "Benji" mutt. Gorgeous but untraceable. Benji could be said to have a little bit of a Lhasa look, a lot of terrier, but a bit of size and silky coat. Maybe the Benji type comes from something like Airedale crossed with something silky and toy-breed like? Lhasa, Shihtzu, even Maltese etc. Unless... more from your description than the photos... Is he a PBGV cross?
  25. You are really not actually serious?? How many dogs in drive would give two hoots about any tasty morsel?? And lifting a dog up and trying to carry it from this situation is well known to be an escalating factor in attacks. So you're going to carry your dog while several powerful dogs are going at him in your arms, completely unscathed and concerned? Or perhaps while also throwing more treats about?? Worked up dogs can switch from play to prey very, very quickly. They don't want to eat, they don't want to make friends with unknown humans or be lured away from their target. The entire point being that these dogs do not belong here. That is not the homeowner's fault for not building a fence big enough to keep whatever dogs out, but thier owner's fault for not keeping them where they belong. Sheesh. Human analogy: Would people here consider someone (say an univited visitor who walks in through an open back door) instigating unwanted sexual advances as being playful? Maybe, maybe a little predatory, but in a playful way. If the victim chooses to not engage, outwardly says so and cowers away in fear, and the offender continues - it's the victim's fault? Because they didn't want to play? Or they didn't stay somewhere where that offender couldn't access them?? If they are physically injured and traumatised it is still their fault because they didn't lock the door to keep that visitor out? If the cops arrive and the offender aggressively shapes up to them and gets belted or even shot, it's now the cops' as well as the victim's fault?
