Ideas Needed On Keeping Wound Dressing On
Alyosha replied to Alyosha's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Have thought of cetrigen but am hoping to keep the site moist and am worried it will dry it more. Honey would be my next choice of application, I have had Tuffrock poultice on it and very happy with the progress. If only I could keep it on. At least the honey wouldn't be so yuck coming out the other end if he licked it off! The Tuffrock makes for interesting clay-ish poos... I was going to try the muzzle but like Telida said, the worry is leaving him. I think him pulling at it creates more potential for injury. And we have to sleep sometime! I went back to Horseland and got a different spray, a crib stop one. They recommended that one and Red Hot but it only comes in a massive bottle...And a much bigger price tag. So will try the Crib stop with heavy adhesive bandage tonight. I don't mind cutting hair off each time I change it, so long as is stays on in between! -
Ideas Needed On Keeping Wound Dressing On

Oh facepalm! I didn't even think of a muzzle!! Thankyou! I'll have to try a wire one. Have yet to see a really long plastic one and he'd probably find a way to eat it anyway! Pjs is a nice idea but he'll shred them. Plus he'll overheat - too much coat. Will have a look for Dxenion's guard thing, haven't got a mental imge at the moment... Thanks guys. :D -
Hi All, Am after some outside of the usual box thoughts and ideas at how to keep a wound dressing on a very determined (and large!) puppy... Wound is upper thigh so hard to bandage anyway, but all chewing deterrents so far don't work. Elizabethan collar no good, he is getting around the biggest one I can find it due to his body length, ie the wound is a long way from his head, and his long head as well. The usual chewing deterrents applicable to bandages are becoming exhausted, proprietary ones, vicks vaporub, even tiger balm, pepper, eucalyptus. This pup has snacked on sard wonder soap once when he raided the laundry so eucalyptus seems to be a favourite. I am considering trying to increase the length of th EC by taping on another width of plastic. But not even sure if this will work, he even got the whole thing off last night and ate part of the EC and the collar he was wearing. The joy of narrow heads, hard to keep collars on... Sigh... It doesn't help that he's bored and sick of toys. Giving him things to chew on food-wise is out as the wound is uncovered and I can't risk a fly. Even indoors if one gets in it could be nasty.

Shows Giving Sole Rights To Vendors - Why?
Alyosha replied to teddywaddy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sounds a very good idea. Do Dogs ACT have a magazine or publication? I think that Clubs / Orgs really limit themselves with giving exclusive vendor rights. On one hand I can see they are seeking an ongoing and reliable relationship, but does that genuinely provide a better benefit than potentially having several? Is it effective management or cronyism? -
Shows Giving Sole Rights To Vendors - Why?
Alyosha replied to teddywaddy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Petition? Geez. All new to me... I'm more than happy to. Especially if decent coffee is involved... Will it sound better coming from the outside, ie. me as a regular visitor to ACT grounds, but a member of Dogs NSW, or from within Dogs ACT membership? -
Shows Giving Sole Rights To Vendors - Why?
Alyosha replied to teddywaddy's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's depressing to chuck expensive food and drink isn't it. I haven't given feedback, but it seems across the board no matter which clubs are holding shows at those grounds. Maybe I should write to Dogs ACT and ask... It might be their decision and not the individual clubs? -
One of mine gt quite nervous of the ring as a pup after several occasions of dogs having a go at her at the ring entrance. What I ended up doing was staying back after the show and playing a game with her in the ring, some fetch, and tug, and generally making it an enjoyable place instead of stressful.

Shows Giving Sole Rights To Vendors - Why?
Alyosha replied to teddywaddy's topic in General Dog Discussion
I can't stand the exclusive caterers garbage. We used to have a lovely lady and her coffee van at the Canberra shows, she has been excluded now as another catering van has sole rights. Trouble is, the coffee is beyond woeful so many now just bring their own. I miss the nice coffees, and refuse to pay for the trash ones. I think restricting it is unfair for the vendors and for the attendees who miss out on the benefit of choice and competition driven quality. And if it's space related that's fine, but I don't think that is always the issue. -
It shouldn't. I've used it on many a cut and scrape.

Gorgeous pups Pockets! Nice to see there are a few Long Stock Coat profiles up already.

I love Espinay's advice. The only thing I've found with the hocks and pasterns, sometimes less trimming is more as if trimmed too far back it can give the illusion of a lack of bone in those areas. I comb hock fluff back and neaten unruly or tufty bits but rarely take it right off. We need photos too... I'm so excited about seeing the longhairs in the ring!! :D

Ahh. More scintillating discussion from Blackdogs and Jade.

The Longcoat has recently been accepted Clyde. Read more here if interested: http://www.ankc.org.au/News.aspx?id=369 Do they grow untidy/tufty bits on feet Pockets? With most coated breeds, especially if you're doing little to no trimming, thinning scissors are your best friend. Much more forgiving, and very handy for thinning down or trimming off any unruly lumps or odd bits.

Dulcie The Pregnant Shar Pei X Staffy
Alyosha replied to Miss Squish's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Oh gawd she is a cutie!! Congrats on the healthy boys. My last litter were 5.5 - 7kg at 6 weeks, and mature at about 35-45kg if that is any help? So maybe these boys might end up in the 25-30kg sort of range? Hopefully once the pups are weaned and her body starts back into normality the coat will come back. She looks healthy and happy enough! Hormones plus the normal stress of pregnancy, birth and puppy raising are hard enough on coat, and this girl went through extra stress being at the pound etc!! -
You're presumptive and incorrect again. And pointlessly condescending. But, discussion: To consider or examine by argument, comment etc; talk over or write about, especially to explore solutions, debate. I think what people have seen as frustrating here is a mentality that wants to see these dogs in a positive light. That in itself is not a bad thing, it is nice to support dogs yes. But to blindly ignore the behaviours that have been clearly shown to have an aggressive or anti social bent is not supporting dogs in general. It could actually be seen to be detrimental to the ongoing public image of dogs. Dog owners / breeders etc often spend considerable effort in promoting dogs and responsible dog ownership. Along with this comes a responsibility or desire to uphold those values and not support the opposite, ie irresponsible ownership and blatantly anti social dog behaviour. So people who give a hoot about the public image of dogs as pets find it deeply disturbing when folks seem so keen and quick to undermine that ethic based upon an emotional and not necessarily rational response. It seems publicly detrimental to dogs, and also to bull breeds in particular, to condemn a decisive action that is a direct intervention in this aggressive incident. How much better does it look from the outside looking in for a knowledgable dog person to say something like "Yes that was terrible to see that dog get shot, but if that dog's owners had been responsible and caring that dog would not have been placed in that situation. Blame for what happened to that dog lies squarely with it's owner/s who have failed their pet, and failed societies expectations."

I was a bit stunned that they failed to record a conviction in a matter of this size. The need vs greed thing is a little absurd really. Surely the numbers - 246- indicate a level of greed on their own? Just because they don't seem very successful at making a motza out of this many dogs doesn't mean the intent isn't there. Why else have that many individuals and be commercially breeding them if not for the almighty dollar?

Janba, thanks for you attention to details that aren't great topay attention to. I think the beagle gets injured yes. And I am also thinking that the fact that the person taking the video says that he knows who owns them, and that he's "f***ing sick of this", indicates this is more than likely a repeat performance and he has experience to base his fear / apprehension of these dogs upon. The brindle dog is up on his toes, taut, tail up, chin flicking up, posturing at the people when they try to distract him from the beagle. I don't think that dog eases up in his intense attitude through any of the segments shown.

Help Me Learn - Dog Behaviour Aggressive Or Not?

There's a great chart on dog postures on page 10 of the 'officer shoots dog" thread. It's a great one, would be worth having about. -
Yep. Curiouser and curiouser...

You asked at the beginning Blackdogs, for people's opinions. You have been given opinions from knowledgable law enforcement perspectives, and from knowledgable dog behaviour perspectives saying yes, the actions were justified. You have also been given opinions based on emotion and even possible breed bias. That's all well and good, but it seems after all that you are not interested in discussing the issue, only complaining about the cop's actions, defending the dog's actions, and seeking others to join you in that. it a thread for discussion or for cop bashing and ratbag dog sympathising?
-
Dear oh dear. Backs slowly out of thread...

Ah I see. Just trying to get my head around special rules here. So bull breeds need to be treated the same as all other dog breeds, and not subject to special rules or suspicion based upon their appearance. Judge the breed and not the deed perhaps? EXCEPT... when that doesn't suit, and then their behaviour is suddenly different to all ther types of dog and should be treated differently. Hmmm.
