A couple of questions re APBTs; 1) As far as I was aware "restricted dogs may not be sold, given away, or acquired... " Along with the following laws; "...must be spay/neutered. They must be muzzled when in public, wear a special red-and-yellow collar, and may only be handled by a competent adult over the age of 18. The dog must live a secure enclosure when at home, and the owner must post "Warning: Dangerous Dog" signs on their property. The owner must also register the dog with the local government and notify the government if the dog attacks a person or animal, cannot be found, dies, has moved out of the area, or is now living at a different location within the local government's jurisdiction." *source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breed-specific_legislation So why does a Google search reveal sellers in almost every state advertising "pitbull puppies" or "red nosed staffies" including one WA breeder with a website, plus a few random breeders offereing pups with papers. How does a non ANKC registered restricted breed aquire papers Some also claim imported lines, top producing sires, etc. 2) Local guy swears black and blue that his dogs are APBTs. (Fair enough, they certainly look the part and seem lovely dogs). BUT he also claims to be a breeder and that his "breeding pair" (who look to be no more than 4-5 years old) were directly imported from the US. Claims he has moved here recently from NSW. Me thinks someone is full of it.... but I'm still curious as to the import laws, including any that have changed over the last 5-10 years or so. Can anyone settle my curiosity? Thank you

Yeah he is. The sad thing is that everyone believes him because he has "owned dogs for years". Never mind the fact that in the 11 years that I have known him dog 1 was shot, dog 2 was tethered 24/7 - he was run over a few months ago when he broke his chain, dog 3 "wouldn't go anywhere because it would stay with dog no 2" - it got run over last Christmas. I am yet to see dog 4... Yet as I have only owned my dog for 2 years I know nothing. I'm sorry but owning dogs and understanding them are as far apart as owning a brain and working as a psycologist. These people don't come to my house and on the rare occasion that they do my dog is crated in a seperate room because I simply don't trust them. They don't see my dog, how he behaves, how much work I have put in. They have no idea or understanding of basic manners, obedience training or behaviour or even simple body language. The redeeming light is my 9 year old niece (different family). She visits quite often and will watch and ask a million questions, then go home and actually DO it with her dog. If a 9 year old child can teach her dog TOT (though likely a modified version of it from watching me ) then ANYONE can. Today she was also telling me that "You know that thing you do with your dog? That heel thing? I am teaching my dog that now". Then watched her brain tick over as I explained crate training. No doubt that will be her next mission -

Me too Here are some gems from my brother-in-law the "dog expert"; -Tie your dog up to it's kennel, that way he'll learn that is his place to eat, sleep and shit. -If you walk your dog at the same time every day he will hold on and only shit on walks - that way you don't need to clean up! -Teach your dog to swim by throwing it out of a boat in the middle of the river. That way it has to learn or drown. -Excercise your puppy by throwing it off the back of the ute and driving off, then it can run and chase you. -If your dog runs away you should belt the crap out of it when it returns. That way it will learn not to do it. -Dogs are easy to train - just break their spirit and then they will do whatever you want. . Oh yes I love talking to other people about dogs -
Oh God I just watched this one: Don't know whether to laugh or cry? So sad ...so true. (Though I did laugh when she called him a moron/dumbf*ck/dipsh*t etc )

Send them the link to dog bites on the Leerburg website. There are some extremely graphic pics there along with stories of how they happened, including photos of children with bites. eta, here: http://leerburg.com/dogbites.htm

The circle with a line through means desexed. The "M" is microchipped. Neither of these are compulsary in SA as far as I'm aware, you must tick the box on the vet forms if you want it. The tattoos that you are refering to re Greyhounds and GSDs are usually 3 letters (to identify the breeders prefix) and 3 numbers (to identify the dog). These tattoos are used in other breeds too - my Ridgie has one

No worries KL, I know how stressful it can be! It sounds like it's fairly normal for these things to ulcerate so I wouldn't panic just yet, but if it looks like it's bothing her (or getting bigger) off to the vet. I'm sure Sasha will be fine though I think I just bathed Kei's with some saline from memory, dont know if it did him any good but it made me worry less.
-
Kei had a small one around a year or so ago which got a little weepy then scabbed up (then disappeared not long after). I think the vet said at the time that it's normal for them to get a little angry/sore looking?? I can't quite remember though.. ETA : http://www.vet.uga.edu/VPP/clerk/woods/index.php

Heartworm Injections, Affordable Vet?
Red Fox replied to daina's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just because there appears to be no immediate adverse reaction to a chemical (whether that be a vaccination, medication, flea/tick prevention/treatment, etc.) it does not necessarily mean that there will be no long term effects. Just a though.. -
Melrose OmegaPet Oil: http://www.naturalpetstore.com.au/d/MOP-80...3-liquid-250ml/ Available from most health food stores, some pharmacies and online. Agree with the others about putting his food down for 15 mins and then removing whatever is not eaten. If you still have no sucess with the dry food perhaps consider the pre-made BARF patties? Balanced, raw and would be financially viable to feed to a small dog: http://www.drianbillinghurst.com/products.php?pid=varieties

I've bought one from Leerburg before. They are great, but pretty much the same thing that K9 Pro has though Leerburgs products are well priced but postage to Australia is very expensive, you are looking at $30+ in basic shipping for one item.

Limited registration means that the dog will have papers but cannot be shown or bred from and will more than likely come with a desexing contract. (pet dog) As opposed to main register which means that the dog is eligable to be entered in shows and possibly bred from.

1. That woman sounds mentally unstable, I wouldn't want to see her again. In fact she sounds like someone to actively avoid. 2. Jogger sounds like a bit of a dick but technically he is in the right. You do need to control your dog... 3. It's a dog park -aka free for all. The incident has been reported, the council might do something. Sounds like a good place to aviod IMO. PF, I agree with you 100%. I'd rather run my dog on a quiet oval, in the rain, at a time of day when no other idiot would bother to venture out, than risk a public dog park. *EFS

Another vote for the K9 Pro leather leashes I wouldn't trust anything less.

You can get a car restraint which attaches to the d-ring on the harness: http://www.worldforpets.com.au/products/pr...ail.asp?ID=3007 (also available from Big W) or http://waggle.com.au/petbuckle-b18/kwik-connect-tether-p272 I prefer the petbuckle attachment as it won't accidently come undone, nor can the dog learn to release it himself

I Also Have A Lump Question... I'm Petrified

Good stuff KL -
Slightly OT but: Without going into what is right, what is wrong, what is legal and what is not, how often does the law actually follow up on things like this? People "find" dogs every day, many keep them. If the dog is not chipped then how does the real owner prove that the "found" (or stolen) dog is in fact their dog? And even if the dog is chipped or the owner has some other kind of "proof" (ie, papers, ear tattoo, photos, etc) will the police take it seriously and bother to follow it through?

How Fussy Is Your Oh Pertaining To Dogs Inside The House
Red Fox replied to Moselle's topic in General Dog Discussion
My dog, my house, my rules. Anyone who doesn't like it can shove it Luckily OH's attitude followed along the lines of the quote below "The Dog Rules : The dog is not allowed in the house. Okay, the dog is allowed in the house, but only in certain rooms. The dog is allowed in all rooms, but has to stay off the furniture. The dog can get on the old furniture only. Fine, the dog is allowed on all the furniture, but is not allowed to sleep with the humans on the bed. Okay, the dog is allowed on the bed, but only by invitation. The dog can sleep on the bed whenever he wants, but not under the covers. The dog can sleep under the covers by invitation only. The dog can sleep under the covers every night. Humans must ask permission to sleep under the covers with the dog." *http://members.tripod.com/m_f_a/dogrules.htm Actually I do recall when visiting a breeder a few years ago husband made a comment along the lines of "Oh well maybe the pup can sleep in a crate inside while he's little and then we'll have to move him to a kennel on the veranda". Breeder raised her eyebrow at him, smiled and said "We'll see". She knew he didn't have a hope in hell of getting his way. The cat was NEVER going to be inside (anywhere bar the laundry) either - said cat now spends most nights sleeping on OH's head -

Best to go to the vet. But just to ease your mind a little, not all lumps are cancerous. Histiocytoma is common in young dogs http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/diseasesco...histiocytom.htm http://www.vetcancercare.com/literature/on...istiocytoma.pdf -
If the dog bails someone up (or bites) it's a management problem. Manage it correctly and there won't be a 2nd time - and if there is then the owner needs to look at WHY and HOW it happened and fix the problem rather than blaming the dog. Your job as an owner is to protect your dog from that which they are fearful of, not place them in a comprimising situation then label them as dangerous or aggressive when they fail.

Keep her crated and/or on leash whenever there are kids in the house (in a seperate room if you can). Baby gates on bedrooms can help to a degree too. Lay down the rules with all new visitors, make sure they understand that they must not approach the dog, talk to her, stare at her, go near the crate, etc. Make sure your own kids understand and help enforce the importance of these rules to their friends too. Never have kids in the house unless you are awake, alert and can commit to supervising 100% of the time. If you're too tired or too busy say no. Some kids will never get it and will set your dog off, dont have these kids over again. Some kids are great, polite and follow the rules easily - encourage these kids to come back. I have a large dog who is reactive to kids and this works for us
-
i agree. i love my kid but i dont care for other peoples kids I'm with both of you. What makes somebody elses children more important than your OWN dogs? Not everybody likes kids - especially other peoples! And (dogs or no dogs) not everybody enjoys having their privacy invaded by someone elses kids looking over the fence all day. I'd ask the neighbours to move the trampoline. Tell them your dog is very old, suffering from dementia and confused and upset by the kids. If that fails tell them you like to garden in the nick and dont feel it's in the kids best interests to be looking over your fence.
