  1. You might hate dogs in places like that (I don't necessarily agree with it either) BUT why did the parent think it was okay to leave the child to run around unsupervised? It's not the job of the staff to watch children and a person sitting in a salon chair can't really do much. Owner of shop is at fault Parent of child is at fault They are both morons. And who suffers the consequences of their idiocy? the poor dog and the poor child. Ashanali, I disagree that the parent is at fault. The very last thing I would expect to see in a hairdressing salon, which services all sorts and sizes of the public, would be a dog. Children go with parents to barbers and hairdressers all over Australia every day of the week. A hairdressing salon is an appropriate place for a child to be and I never tied any of mine up while I was in the chair. They were told to stay in the salon and not go outside. They were free to do whatever in the salon, except be a nuisance to other people (or to me). Most parents in a barbers chair would not have been able to quickly intervene in this situation and any warning growls were probably drowned out by hairdryers. A hairdressing salon is not an appropriate place for a dog to be and is fraught with risks. Those risks will now almost definitely take this dogs life. Souff The parent made the choice to have a haircut in a salon with a dog. The parent could have turned around and left when it saw the dog if the parent was not going to ensure their child stayed away from the dog. My kids were never allowed to wander around in the salon, its a hazard to the staff who have sharp scissors and chemicals being used.If the dog had a bone as suggested I would not be sitting any where near the dog with my toddler. I feel this is commen sense. I dont think it was a good idea to have the dog being fed and in the store but the parent must also accept his/her part in this. They made the choice to enter the store thereby IMO accepting the risk of the dog being there. The dog and the child are the victims here, the dog owner and the parent are both responsible.I wish the little girl a speedy recovery and hope she is not scared of dogs for good now because of this. The store owner really should have had the dog confined at least behind baby gates preferably a crate.
  2. I really feel for the older pooches. We have not had a lead up to get them used to the warmer weather. I dont think this helps. My two labs are still just shedding their winter coat so Mokha in particular is still in quite a thick coat. I hope the weather cools down soon just for a little relief. I freeze margarine containers with water and pop them out into their water bowls, frozen kongs and I hate to admit but while I was out today I left the airconditioning on just for the dogs. I would worry otherwise.
  3. Best of luck with Molly staying seizure free for the rest of your trip. My son had seizures as a teenager and I know how frightened I was so I can imagine your horror. Sounds to me like you kept a clear head and did a great job helping her. Well done. Happy travelling.
  4. Mokha had two baby teeth taken out when he was being neutured. One was broken the other was not coming out and the adult tooth had grown in beside it.(both were the canine teeth)
  5. I tried many channels to report the death of my dog to the drug company concerned - they did not want to know. The NZVA did not want to know. This is very concerning. You would think they would be interested in all the results, good and bad so that perhaps recommendations could be made as to unsuitable or high risk dogs for vaccinating . A different vaccination protocol could be applied to these dogs. How do you know which vaccination could be the fatal one. A small reaction to start, getting worse each time but not considered too serious until your dogs immune system cant take any more. I am very sorry about the death of your dog and the lack of interest from the drug company involved.
  6. Thanks. We have several family members who have allergies (peanut, egg etc) and with each subsequent exposure the reaction got significantly worse. These things we eliminate not wanting to push to the point of an anaphylactic type reaction. This is why I worry about his reactions to his vaccinations so far. The lump Mokha developed each time has gotten much bigger too.I am all for vaccination, I have vaccinated all my kids and my dogs, just Mokhas case has caused me to rethink in his case. I would not hesitate to vaccinate any other dog I have in the future but I think the yearly thing is a bit over the top.
  7. Grass seeds are a nasty problem. Be wary of them in the ears too. Molly had one go in her ear, she was running around like she had lost her mind. The problem is the grass seeds can sort of lodge themselves in place. I would hate to think Rico might inhale it into his lungs. I would get to the vet today, its worth it for your peace of mind. Good luck, I hope Rico will be fine without to much upset to him.
  8. I agree. This doesnt sounds like a true vaccination reaction to me. Vaccines are straight out of the fridge so are cold under the dogs skin. Its not uncommon for them to scratch at the site for a while after the vaccine. Not forgetting that he'd received an antihistamine beforehand to reduce any reaction due to the one he'd had the year before. Even the AVA are cautioning against yearly vaccinations even in the absence of any reaction. Yet many Vets seem to be swimming against the tide on that recommendation. Erny that is what worries me. If this is what he was like with antihistamine before his vaccination I hate to think how he would have been otherwise. He had the C5 shot. I wonder if dogs with other allergies/intolerance's are more likely to react to these vaccines. If anyone has a dog that has reacted in the past I would love to hear what you have done.
  9. I agree. This doesnt sounds like a true vaccination reaction to me. Vaccines are straight out of the fridge so are cold under the dogs skin. Its not uncommon for them to scratch at the site for a while after the vaccine. I will definitely ask my vet when we go back what she feels about the way he reacted. Last year my other usual vet said he was having a reaction and it was confirmed by his improvement after giving the antihistamine. I hope that his reaction today is more 'normal' as it would make life easier not to have to worry about vaccination reaction. I had so much to discuss today regarding his lameness, sorting out xrays and specialist referral etc that after he started to calm a little we got straight on to that. What would be an abnormal reaction to a vaccination? This was bad enough.Forgot to mention he was panting a lot too for quite a while afterwards which does not usually happen from a vet visit. I don't know what to think or what to do next year. I think a discussion with my vet will be the best way to go.
  10. After his final puppy vaccination on the way home he became very disorientated, could not walk properly, had excessive itching and swelling around the site of the injection and I had to return him to the vets to have a shot to reduce the reaction. It did work quite successfully and within an hour or so he was improving and by the afternoon was back to his usual self mostly. One year on, this morning he was administered the antihistamine to try to reduce his reaction. He just stood there not fussed at all by this injection. About 5 minutes later he had the vaccination. This is when his behaviour changed. He became very upset, understanding this dog is usually so mellow at the vets they can do anything to him, Was scratching furiously, fur was going every where and was very agitated thrashing around the room and considering he is showing lameness in his right front leg I was very surprised to see him jump around like this. He thankfully stopped scratching at the site after about 30 minutes but was very tired and mopey for the rest of the day.He eyes are all watery and he does not want me to touch any where near the injection site. He has some swelling again at the injection site. 3 vaccinations ago he just had swelling at the site of the injection and each vaccination seems to give a worse result, even with giving the other shot first. It really concerns me.I hate to think how he would be if he had the vaccination alone. It was not as if it was just itchy, it was more like he was in pain.He was throwing himself around banging into the exam table and cabinets. I am not keen to repeat it really.
  11. Does anyone know how long immunity can last from the vaccinations he has already had. He had the required puppy shots and this is his first yearly booster.
  12. I will definitely ask about titre testing as I am really not wanting to vaccinate every year, maybe 3 yearly would be ok. He has enough going on healthwise with his joints. I will ask at my club this weekend what their opinion is on this. I wonder if it is only one component of the vaccination that is causing this. I know with my nephew it was only one part of the childrens vaccination causing the allergic reaction so they gave him this in much smaller doses.I will discuss with my vet not vaccinating yearly, see what she says. Thanks for the ideas.
  13. Took Mokha to the vet today, looks like we are off to the ortho vet again with his right elbow this time but his reaction to his vaccination has me worried. Last year when he had his vaccination he had some significant reactions within minutes of the vaccination and became very unwell on the drive home so we had to go back for another injection to help this. This year he was given the shot before having his yearly vaccination but still within seconds this time began to jump around and scratch and was quite distressed. Thankfully it passed in about 1/2 an hour or so. He needs to be vaccinated to attend obedience class but I am worried how he will be with his next one. I am wondering if anyone else has any experience with this?Did your dog get worse every year?
  14. I tried this product on Mokha and he went nuts, scratching and carrying on. I don't use spot ons on him I use Sentinel spectrum and capstar tablets when necessary. He is a dog with various allergies so I was not willing to try it a second time.Lots of dogs use it without problems I assume or there would be no market for it.It may have just been the broken skin. You could try putting it on in a different spot.
  15. I use Cali Natural for Mokha as it is the only dry food he can tolerate due to food sensitivities/allergies. I do not like that I can only source it from PP but I have not found another food that he does so well on. I love the food, I just wish someone else could import it.
  16. I would only use them if your dog is not inclined to chew. I have labradors and they have destroyed two wheatbags consuming the contents. Makes for interesting poo for a few days.It comes out undigested. They can sometimes be a lot hotter than they feel at first, I have burnt my skin on them so I would be very cautious about using them IMO.
  17. Mokha and OP, I am sorry to hear about your furkids and what they are going through. So glad you got a 'mud roll' Mokha ! That must make you smile. I hope you don't mind me taking this slightly off posted topic but I am wondering. Mokha do you know your lab's parents hip/elbow scores ? This is something I am very paranoid about wiht our lab and although he's fine at the moment aged 5 months, I'm keen to prevent it happening (we watch his level of exercise / impact / jumping etc). But I know we do everything we can to avoid -but sometimes it's just unavoidable. This might be a really obvious question but I'm interested to know whether sometimes - can the sire/dam's hip scores be ok but the offspring still suffers ? We dont know Mokhas parentage at all, he was bought before I knew better from a certain franchise that showed no interest when I informed them that he had ED/HD. I told them I would like their supplier of labs informed that they were supplying poor health dogs but could not even get the manager to call us back even after several in person visits to the store. I know better now but Mokha is our responsibility so we will do what we can to give him the best life he can have. I would never buy another dog unless I could view the parents clearances or rescue as we did with Molly. I believe over exercising and diet can contribute but we were very careful with Mokha and he has been kept lean all along on a good diet. I can only come to the conclusion it is hereditary. At least with the parentage known to have good joints you can probably be more confident of a healthy pup. I hope you never have to worry about any joint problems. Sometimes it breaks my heart when I look at my lovely chocolate boy knowing that their is going to be pain in his future.
  18. Has he pooped that zipper yet? If it doesn't show up soon and he shows any signs of abdominal pain or stops pooing please go to the vet.
  19. I am so sorry that Lucys results are not good. At least the drugs will buy you some time and you can love her that bit longer and she wont have to go through the stress of radiation treatments. It seems so unfair. As hard as it will be please try just to enjoy every day you have with her and not focus on how long she will be with you for. Let her final memories be of the happiness she feels when she is with you.
  20. I am wondering what his food bowl is made of and perhaps he does not like the smell or feel of it. Has he always done this or is it just with his current bowl?
  21. Thanks showdog.I did a search on inverted molars and came up with a thread that had some recommended dental specialists.I hope he wont have any issues but now I know where to go if he does. I tried to take a photo but he was not co operating.
  22. Pets at home Narre warren stock it and also Pet Stock stores which are all over. I would ring ahead as Eagle pack has been a bit hard to get lately and you might need to try a few stores. Good luck.
  23. Thanks mercedes I will. I sometimes feel embaressed that I was so clueless when we got Mokha and of course adopted Molly from a shelter to try to balance things out a little.See you in the lab thread.
  24. I am so sorry that the results came back as cancer. I hope your oncologist visit on Monday has some good news for you on treatment options. Best of luck.
  25. Hi Mercedes, I have eliminated red meat and wheat, corn, basically all grain except rice. He does have sardines now, they are new and he seems to be ok with them. I have to be careful what products I use in the house and cant use any spot on flea products. Despite his shortcomings he is a beautiful dog but I will never buy a labrador again that I cant trace its genetics back (ie pure bred registered ethical breeder). I have learnt the hard way but he is my responsibility which is why we do what is needed. I hope this teeth thing isnt linked to any other strange health issues. Vet wasnt fussed by them. The teeth are rotated a full 180 degrees.
