  1. I am no expert but I think they would be better if you could take on one or two and get a rescue to help with the others. I would think 4 litter mates raised together with no training would be a full time job to train all of them. They would never be rehomed all together so separating them sooner rather than later may be a good thing. Molly came to us as a one year old with absolutely no training what so ever and she is a fantastic dog. Please dont think they cant be helped. If even one of the four can be rehomed wouldnt that make it worth trying to find out.
  2. I am sorry for your troubles with your chi. My labs are 26kg and get 2 cups a day so I would think your little one would need a lot less than a cup. I take Mokha who has HD swimming twice a week. Since you have a chi I was thinking she could probably swim in a full bath for some extra exercise. She could do it every day and that would help her lose weight and is not hard on her joints.
  3. I hope you can find what you are looking for. I understand your need for it. It is amazing how much discarded food you come across on a single walk, I am always saying "leave it" but in your case I can see why a muzzle would be a good solution. I saw a muzzle on a border collie the other day that was some sort of black heavy fabric, it looked quite restrictive so even though the end of the mouth was uncovered I would think it would be very difficult to pick up food with this on.Perhaps your local pet supply might let you try different ones on to see what works.
  4. My dogs were forever chewing on the wood chips. Drove me mad.
  5. I really understand the OP situation, my youngest daughter was terrified not only of dogs but cats as well. She would literally freeze unable to speak or move if she saw one. Our collie passed when she was very small and we did not get another dog until she was 15. I think a boxer pup is probably to bouncy for her and the problem will only get worse as the pup grows. I sometimes find boxers, unless well trained to be overwhelming and I have labradors. If you are going to keep the pup the sooner you get started on obedience the better, I found with my daughter once the dogs began to obey her commands she was much more confident with them. I think if she is this frightened at 10 years of age seeking some professional help would be a good idea, my daughter did improve as she got older and was able to think more rationally about the situation.ie the dog is on a leash it cannot bother me. I dont know what I would do in your situation, it is clear you had the best of intentions in getting the pup. Perhaps a family discussion is needed including your boys who obviously know of their sisters fears and come to a decision as a family what is best for the pup as well as your daughter. ETA I wish you best of luck with finding a solution that everyone involved can be ok with.
  6. Next dog without a doubt Smooth collie (blue merle boy) Rough or smooth collie (sable girl, my last sable girl was the sweetest dog, I miss her so) Pug Black Labrador Aussie shepard Great Dane Standard Poodle (black one please) Maltese More labradors and collies. I dont think I will live long enough to get through my list but I will try
  7. I am really angry at what has happened to you and your daughter. I can not believe they tried to make you take the difference as a store credit. You would think you were returning something to a department store not settling an account for a deceased pet. Absolutely disgusting.I would certainly be letting your animal owning friends about this so they can avoid attending this vet in the future.Recently I had to rush Mokha to the Evet in Hallam, Vic in the middle of the night. While the vet rushed him out the back to start treatment the nurse informed me of the cost of an initial consult and then proceeded to come back an update me on any further costs as they decided what to do. I was not charged until we were going home. Such different service.
  8. I am disappointed because I have used their products for about 20 months and it has always been of good quality. The fact it is only available from PP or PGD has always been a negative for me. I am currently moving away from using it hoping Mokha will do well on another kibble but if another non pet selling franchise can get the ok to distribute it here that would be great. We will see if it every happens.
  9. I have fed my lab Cali Nat chicken and rice since he was a pup. It is a good food but it does have grains, the adult version is quite a high carb content I believe. I think this may be contributing to Mokha ear problems. As far as I know the Lamb and rice is not available in Australia. It is very expensive but I have had good results with Mokha in the past. He has various food intolerances. I have also fed my other lab Innova made by the same company, on paper it looked a good food but she never had a firm poo on it even cutting back the amount fed so I have her on Eagle Pack which she has always done well on. Eagle Pack products also known as holistic selects now are well worth looking at IMO. I am transitioning Mokha off Cali Natural now as he is a bit older and hopefully can tolerate another food. My conscience has got the better of me because you can only buy Natura products from Pets Paradise or their partner business and I just dont want to support a compnay that sells kittens and pups. You could look at Artemis or Nutro too. ETA ( I have just found out that Natura has been bought out by P & G who own Iams and Eukenuba so I wonder whether the quality will stay the same, if not it will not be worth the huge price per bag.
  10. Mokha body slammed me once while zooming around the back yard. The only thing that saved me from certain injury was the washing line. I was pegging on some clothing so my hands were very close and I managed to grab hold just in time.I did however look completely idiotic to my neighbour whose head popped over the fence to see what the commotion was and there I am 40 years old swinging from the clothes line like I used to as a kid. No physical injury just pride this time.
  11. I have had this happen twice, teenage daughters leaving them lying around. The only result was really grainy poo.Be warned it came out at high speed I think it was even on the fence. Just grains of wheat stuck together. Horrible but thankfully no other problems.
  12. Sorry to hear about Ramses food frenzy, its the one thing that I am not keen on with labradors. The constant search for food, whether its edible or not with Mokha. I hope by tonight he is feeling a lot better. I am glad I am not the one who will be on poo patrol at your house today.
  13. I dont think I would do this, you would be relying on the active ingredients being distributed evenly through out the chew.
  14. Mokha and I participated in this study last weekend. Now Mokha at home is usually never far from me and is not too fussed about getting attention from anyone but family members. When we entered all he did was sniff, did not look up once. Was not interested in the stranger. What I thought was adorable and I did not expect it was when I left the room he sat and maintained the sit looking at the exit for quite a while. When at home before he comes inside he must always do a lovely sit. I was glad to see him do this. When I did not come back he started to whine and scratch at the door. When I came back in he lied in front of me until called by the stranger at which point he did go up for a pat but quickly came back, gave my hands a quick lick, something he does at home, a bit like a thankyou gesture usually straight after eating. All in all he behaved exactly as I hoped he would and very consistent with how he is at home. I would love to do it with Molly, she would probably climb in his lap,she loves attention. I think she still needs more dogs and I asked had she had any Great Danes and she said no, so anyone with a Dane that might like to participate would be great.
  15. What about a Capstar which kills adult fleas fast and then on to sentinel spectrum which does worms as well.
  16. Thank goodness you managed to stop, I cant believe people do this but I seem to be seeing it more and more these days with people walking along busy roads or through shopping centre car park dogs off lead. I am just glad for your sake that you did not hit the dog it is a horrible feeling. 1 week after getting my licence, many many years ago a poodle ran under the wheels of my car, I did not see it but felt it, horrible horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, pulled up poor little thing had broken leg and its owners were idiots.Could not understand why I was so upset at them for putting me in that situation. All I could do was cry.
  17. Having seen on more than one occasion one of the plastic clip collars break when the dog suddenly lunges there is no way I would take my dog out walking in one of these. Leather all the way I think when you are looking at flat collars. ETA I dont leave collars on at home so I would not know about rough play durability but I do know it takes a lot less time to chew through a fabric plastic collar than a leather one.I have never had a leather collar let me down but not all leather collars are the same quality either.
  18. We introduced two kittens to the family late last year. At first we were very careful because our DSH moggy was only 6 weeks old and 460grams when we got him.He is an orphan and had been hand raised since two weeks old by a friend, he was not doing so well as his siblings so we took him on. He has proven to be such a brave thing. He craves attention from the dogs, always rubbing up against them, teasing them and doesnt mind being licked from top to toe. Our other kitten Summer came from a shelter at 9 weeks old, she keeps to herself mostly but is getting braver every day. All in all it has worked really well, although I never leave the kittens unattended with the dogs, just in case.I dont think Mokha and Molly realise the cats we see on walk are the same species as they live with. Molly is scared of wandering cats but is not at all fussed with ours. Seeing Mokha and Shadow (our little orphan kitten) cuddles up together is priceless.
  19. Good luck, it does not hurt to get an alternative opinion. It does not matter what the staff think, they should never make you feel bad about researching and getting opinions on whats best for your pup. After all you are the one making the decisions, paying for them financially and otherwise.
  20. I am no expert but I do have a lab with HD and ED. Mokhas HD was picked up by PennHipp xray and he started displaying some symptoms. He was 6 months at the time so too old for your surgery that has been suggested. We saw an ortho specialist who did not want to rush into anything so monitered him monthly with the view to do Triple Pelvic Osteotomy this is where they cut the pelvic bone and reshape it so the femoral head sits more securely in the hip joint. It is expensive and major surgery. We were going to go ahead with this but my surgeon suggested that since Mokha was doing so well being managed with careful exercise, swimming, joint supplements, being kept lean he did not think the surgery was warranted. Mokha hip scores were in the worst 20% for labs by the way. We are a year 1 1/2 years from initial diagnosis, we did have surgery on the elbow as the elbow was reducing his quality of life significantly. We are still using the same things to manage Mokha and his joints along with monthly Cartrophen injections. We may in the future do a hip replacement on his worst hip if necessary but for now we are just medically and lifestyle managing. I know what a hard decision this is, I struggled with the idea of putting Mokha through 2 major operations as the hips would be done seperately. If the ortho had said this was what to do I would have done it but I must say I was relieved when he felt Mokha would do well with more conservative management. Only time will tell if we made the right decision. If you dont go ahead and wait and see how your pup goes there is the option of the TPO until the pup is about 1 year old as long as there is no arthritis in the joints or a hip replacement later on although I think this is seen as a salvage sort of operation once the dog is very lame.Best wishes to you and the decisions you have to make.Sorry for the really long reply.
  21. Poor Lottie, I hope she makes a quick recovery. Mokha was blocked up for three days, same things vomiting up all food, no pooping but finally on day 3 he pooped out the offending hair tie all tangled with grass and I was so relieved. Hopefully it is just a tummy bug and all will be well.
  22. Are any of your neighbours shift workers who may be coming home at this time and disturbing him.I would suggest you close the laundry door so he cant go outside. He should be able at his age to not need to go out overnight.Perhaps he would feel more secure if you crated him instead.
  23. Good on you for recognizing that this is a problem and wanting to do something about it. Being the owner of two labradors I hate it when owners of smaller breeds think it is ok for their dog to go off at my dogs but it would be completely unacceptable if my dogs did it to theirs. Have you tried distracting her with treats or a toy when another dog comes into sight and praising her if she ignores the dog and focuses on you. I used this with Molly and it really worked well. I also remind her to "leave it" if she shows interest in another dog and keep walking past at a fast pace praising or giving a treat if she does not look to the other dog. Perhaps you could socialize with some friends dogs of different sizes so she gets used to other dogs. Good luck, I know it is annoying when they do this but I am a complete amateur when it comes to training dogs but this is one thing I have had success in. Other things I am still working on.
  24. He is a beautiful pup. Congratulations, did he come from PetsHaven, he just reminds me of a pup I was admiring on their site not too long ago.
  25. Mokha is the only dog I have had from a puppy. I had waited more than a decade for him, raising 3 kids and working had kept me busy. Compared to my 3rd child who was fed every two hours and had shocking allergies and asthma having a pup seemed so much easier. It felt like having a toddler, you had to be watching all the time. The worst thing was I never wanted to go out and leave him behind. He was hard to toilet train, due mainly to his excess consumption of water, but once we started measuring his fluids the toilet training was quick. Before this he would pee every 10 minutes, it was exhausting. Yes he chewed things, actually lots and lots of things but I had waited so long for him I really did not care. We got Molly when Mokha was four months old,she was one. Then I found out was busy was.No regrets and I look forward to a puppy, maybe in about 8 years, a smooth collie. Puppyhood just goes by too quickly.
