Adnil, one of the attacks that happened during this 'spate' of attacks was a Labrador that severely injured a childs face. The story and photo is posted here. The injuries were much worse than either of these 'pit bull' attacks but they did not mention it. Kinda blows your theory out of the water.

Thanks Odin-genie. It's so hard to do that when you're on an iPhone!

This story is proof of why BSL is so dangerous to our society. Her quotes say everything. Because it wasn't a staffy or pit bull and was a lab which is 'known to be friendly with children' she allowed her child to pat an unknown dog and did so herself without permission. BSL creates a false sense of security around certain breeds and means that attacks like this happen. If it was a staffy or a pit she would have kept her child away and the attack would have been avoided. Poor child, I hope he can recover from this both physically and mentally

In NSW a dog is considered under effective control if it's tied to a pole. Icanr link te relevant section as I'm on my iPhone but have a read of the companion animals act 1998. Ridiculous I know. As for the breed ID. All I can do is laugh or I'd cry. So over it.

Lab At 10months Was Desexed 5 Days Ago And Now Has Bad Cough
melzawelza replied to chellz's topic in General Dog Discussion
They don't always need antibiotics but if he's coughing so badly he's throwing up i'd recommend it. He will get relief quicker. Honestly don't stress so much, cough is not a big deal. Just imagine your kid with a cold and a bad cough - you wouldn't freak out. Same thing for your pup -

thankyou.....ohh crap i did think of that.. so she can catch that even if she has been immunized? what r the symptoms? and what do they do to treat it? It can be deadly right?? ohh okay now im stressing.. Definitely not deadly!! Not unless your dog is two weeks old LOL. Don't stress, it's just a doggy cold, although it sounds like her case is nasty. Just keep her warm and quiet and go get her some antibiotics tomorrow -
That is disgusting in every way

Hi there, This is a tricky one. According to the Act (which you've copied and pasted) she does have to wear a collar and tag. My understanding is that this is when she is in a public place (the legislation can't make you put a collar on her on private property). The issue is that she's escaped and as such didn't have one on. The CAA is a bastard and there are a lot of muddy areas. Personally I think getting you for the tag when the dog has escaped is a bit of a low thing to do. You could talk to them about the fact that she doesn't wear a collar/tag at home but you always put one on when you go for a walk, but since she escaped she wasn't wearing one. If that doesn't work you could appeal the fine in court a nd you may have a good chance of winning, but if not it'll cost you even more. The other fine you would have received is a fine for 'not preventing escape' and theres no way you will be able to get out of that one, as she escaped and was picked up by the rangers. Sucks that they aren't a council that give a warning first time as a lot do, but theres nothing you can do really. Sorry to hear you got whacked with so much at once.

What absolute scumbags!!! So glad to hear she's home safe and sound though!

THE pet industry will take responsibility for finding homes for dogs found dumped on the street or surrendered to shelters if checks reveal the animal was first sold through an accredited pet shop. The unprecedented initiative has the potential to save the RSPCA, councils and other animal welfare shelters hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in the care and rehousing of unwanted pets. The retail pet industry has suffered a black eye in recent years with its alleged association with "puppy farms" and attempts by Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and animal welfare groups to ban the sale of cats and dogs in shops. Pet Industry Association of Australia boss Roger Perkins said the new policy, to be released within weeks, would apply only to its members. He said only about 50 per cent of pet shops were association members but he hoped the initiative would bring the majority of non-members on board or risk being shunned by consumers because they were not "accredited". Mr Perkins said individual shops would be "absolved" from taking a pet back. Instead the "industry would take responsibility", with pets cared for by other members including kennels and groomers. Details are yet to be released but the point-of-sale documentation is expected to be linked to the dog's microchip and kept on a database that could be checked whenever a stray is found. Source What do you guys think? I find it interesting about individual shops being absolved - what motivation is there then for them to pick the right homes in the first place?

Pet Friendly Rental Properties In Wollongong
melzawelza replied to Brus84's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hi there! Welcome to DOL. I moved to the Sutherland Shire in January but lived in Wollongong for about three years. We are currently dogless but we rented through Southern Estates Wollongong with two cats and a bird. They are not your standard real estate that has a blanket no pets policy, they are quite accommodating and really helped us out in finding a place. They treated us fantastically while we rented from them and I couldn't recommend them more. If possible try to go through Karen - she used to be a dog trainer and is a really great property manager. I would contact them as your first port of call as I found all the other real estates in the area to be very unhelpful when it came to pets. Good luck!! -
I most certainly did. You're really on a roll today aren't you?

Horrific attack and that poor poor woman and witness. Completely unacceptable and yes those particular dogs should be put to sleep. However the person above that made the offensive comment about pit supporters and the breed should apologise for her ridiculous remark. No anti-bsl person would defend these dogs or their actions, but that also doesn't mean we extrapolate what has happened to blaming an entire breed. Educate yourself about the breed and about how successful BSL has been in other countries and our own and maybe you will learn a thing or two and not embarrass yourself again. And it was YOU that made a point about the breed first, NOT us.

The teeth could be worn down due to being ball mad? Not super uncommon in the working breeds.

What Is Your Opinion On This Video?
melzawelza replied to melzawelza's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thank you everyone for your replies, they have been very interesting and also have me thinking about the situation from different sides. One comment that rang true was that the officer didn't have the luxury to watch the dogs interactions for 2 minutes like we did. This is very true, and for this reason yes he could make a different judgement call to what we would do in that situation. However I do believe the officer went in expecting to shoot the dogs. He walked in with his gun read, asked which dog it was and then shot the first one that barked at him three times. I think the main point I've come to with this is that the police officer was the wrong person to be attending. That should have been an ACO trained in capturing dogs with the least injury possible. The cop knew he didn't have a catch pole or seemingly any experience in dogs, so why did he not call for the local ACO to attend? It doesn't help that a google search brought me to an American law enforcement forum where the posters were flippantly commenting that they shoot '2-3 dogs per week' and laughing over what a big stink the dog owners kick up. -

Rhetorical question, not aimed at you specifically, just musing on my initial point and why I made that comment -

Of course anyone would feel sorry for the beagle, there are two strange dogs in his yard and he is very distressed by it. However, the blue dogs body language in my eyes is nothing but playful. Not so sure about the other one, as you don't see much of it's interaction with the beagle in the footage, but it doesn't seem as relaxed and friendly as the blue dog. My point in that comment was that they DIDNT injure or kill the beagle, so do they need to be shot? Yes their behaviour is inappropriate, yes they shouldn't be in this man's yard.. but do they deserve to be shot within thirty seconds of the cop arriving? -

Steve Courtney without a doubt. He is k9pro on here. http://www.k9pro.com.au/ -
I came across this video on youtube and was pretty upset by it ( not to mention the disgusting comments underneath). However i'm a pit bull/amstaff/stafford lover so I could certainly be biased. I'd like some opinions from others on the behaviour of the dogs, the homeowners and the cop. Video: Be warned that the end of this footage shows a dog being shot and injured briefly. It is upsetting although luckily not too graphic. The poor dog does scream though Even if you don't want to see the dog be shot, you could watch up until the cop arrives and turn it off, as i'd still love people's opinions on the dogs behaviour at the mans house and whether they believe it needed to be shot. My observations: The blue dog that was shot was trying to play with the beagle. That is clear. The fawn coloured dog seems less friendly from what I can see, but in my opinion if these dogs wanted to hurt or kill the dog they would have. Yes the blue dog is barking at the homeowners and cop, however they were threatening it with a rake.... I have no doubt that these dogs should NOT have been loose and on this property and they certainly should have been seized by animal control, but I believe the cops action is absolutely disgusting. He clearly came on the scene expecting to shoot the dogs with his gun drawn, and the dog let out one bark at a man in a uniform holding an implement and he shot it. Disgusting. I would bet no action would have been taken either.
