  1. First ever CAMPING trip, down the Coorong... he was EXCELLENT! Hope you enjoy
  2. Head Shot Boxing Day: Taken with a friends SLR camera... makes me WANT one Oscar and Tiger Oscar and my 10 year old brother Jacob Swimming in the Lake
  3. Just wanted to say this has been a great read, extremely insightful as well so thanks to all contributing members and all creatures for creating it. I own an Amstaff that also loves his rough play, I have been fortunate to have access to a family members small Tenterfield Terrier both as a puppy and at the moment as an adult for long periods of time (they holiday a lot). Oscar hadn't had much interaction with small dogs as he is a big dog and often ignores the smaller dogs to opt for the rough and tumble of bigger dogs. From day one I worked with him on understanding her size, he shocked me in that he is very gentle (not his usual style), he is a body slam fan as all stafford owners know too well, and has never tried anything like that with her. I taught him from the first interaction to drop in play with her, so he is on her level, if they do some chasey as soon as she stops he drops, he got the idea very quickly and has never lost it. So that could be a good thing to teach in play, that your stafford drops when playing with the puppy? If they do get over the top, I simply stop the play, Oscar will actually take himself over to his crate for some alone time/breather, and I make sure she leaves him alone (his crate is off limits to her), when he crates himself she goes for a nap I honestly could not recommend a crate highly enough, best thing that I have ever bought as a dog owner. Hope it all works out
  4. Amstaff here with Dew Claws, never had an injury, but I have had to cut them.
  5. Im sure I could but isnt it a large sized kibble? Not sure my iggies would want to eat too much if its too much effort to chew it lol No...it's not large...about the size of a small pea & comes in 20kilo bags for about $90. Contact the distributors & they will send you out a sample. It's really good stuff, you only have to read the threads on this forum to see that. Getting it delivered is the biggest problem. You might be closest to the SA distributor. Hi, don't want to hijack the topic but who is the SA distributor, any details would be greatly appreciated?
  6. Hopefully we can make some of the meets next year, we have been doing our best on getting Oscar to calm down, so even if he stays on lead. I haven't been for a long time and there are a lot of Spitz Breed dogs now, how do they play? Do they enjoy a bit of rough play, as Oscar definitely does.
  7. Oscar thus far has: A Santa's Little Yelper Shirt Nylabone Some Reindeer Ears From K9 Pro: Nail Clippers HERM SPRENGER Nut and Bolt Huck (love the indestructible guarantee) Orbee Tough Ball Still wanting to get: Zoom Groom
  8. I have an American Staffy with a very fine coat. The only brush that will actually pick up and remove hair is a horses Curry Comb. My issue is that he sweats a lot in summer, making him get a real doggy smell. I am wondering what sort of Shampoo people use for their dogs who have similar coats? Is there a shampoo that is good for his coat and has a nice smell to it that lasts? We have only ever used the supermarket brands, we do not wash him often and most of the time he goes to the groomer for a wash, but it would be good to have something on hand. Thanks
  9. I would also suggest a Tenterfield Terrier. We looked after one not long ago and wow, what an amazing small dog. She was extremely affectionate, would cuddle with anyone who would have her. And was definitely able to cope with the large dog play style, she gave as good as she got and absolutely loved the rough and tumble of an Amstaff. Very low maintenance, and extremely easily walked. highly confident breed so very rarely startled. My experience with this breed really changed my opinion of small dogs. I wish you luck in your search, it is good to red such a thread. Also otherwise a French Bulldog? Have heard they are a fairly robust breed.
  10. We have one that Oscar has seen once and it now sits in the cupboard basically brand new First time we gave it a go he took it straight to his bed to chew the lid off. We brought it back to 'show' him where the treats come from etc, and still he decided it would be more fun to chew. So it is a toy that doesn't work for us, we have a dog that likes to chew all his toys. But otherwise is a fantastic idea, and great toy, if it suits your dog. We will have to wait a couple of years for puppy number 2 for it to become useful for us
  11. Not sure if people know about this event but thought I would post anyway. The PAW Project raises awareness about the 250,000 healthy dogs & cats that are killed every year in Australian pounds & shelters. Sunday 14th Nov, starting at 12 noon, come for lunch and stay for the huge human paw print formation at 2pm. Let's show the other states and have a huge turn out - that even though we might be a little city, our hearts are big. Bonython Park (that's the park opposite Coke on Port Rd). Come for a fun family day out, sausage sizzle, ice cream, coffee, Affordable Mobile Dog Wash, balloons for kids, face painter, free goodie bags and much much more. So come along to help in the formation of a giant human paw print and raise awareness. *Info taken from the internet. We will be there, I hope other SA Dolers can get on board for a great cause
  12. What sort of dog was he? Stunning! What amazing dogs you have and have had.
  13. Not a great camera or photographer but wanted to share: New Scarf! Catching some Sun while it was out!
  14. I have no idea how she walks, haven't tried yet because I wasn't sure on lead. I have a fairly thin Rogz one from when Oscar was a puppy that I will try her on tomorrow. Thanks for the tip on Coles.
  15. I have definitely noticed the thinking she is a big dog, when she is really a small dog. She is around 5 months old. So a normal lead will work, I just wasn't sure? As I said no experience with little dogs, but she is definitely a bit big for her boots, but then so is Oscar Thanks for the advice.
  16. Looking to DOL for some advice. We are looking after my uncle and aunties puppy (Tenterfield Terrier) for 11 days while they are away. I am wanting to take the dogs out, but I have no clue about a leash for a small dog? I am wanting something just temporary so not to expensive but have never owned a small dog and have no clue where to begin, I am guessing something light weight? Also would love to hear from any DOLers that own or have owned this breed, she is a very confident puppy and has exactly the same play style as Oscar, I am guessing it is a Terrier thing? They are getting on like a house on fire, it is truly amazing, especially seeing the size difference between them.
  17. I also live in Strathalbyn and will be watching this thread in anticipation. I normally take Oscar to Mt Barker Pet n Pedigree, but a mobile wash would be excellent.
  18. I bought it from Waggle Wear, extremely happy with them. Lots of payment options, good for those like me who do not own a credit card. Also extremely fast, arrived here within a few days and great communication. Cannot speak highly enough of their service. What one did you end up getting golden girl?
  19. So what did you choose in the end? Chose the Ruffwear Palisades Pack. See First Post for Photo. Very happy with it and the water bladders are great.
  20. Sending POSITIVE THOUGHTS and HEALING VIBES from Oscar and I! Couldn't think of anything worse than watching your dog be attacked, thinking of you!
  21. Bump so people can see what backpack we chose in the end. Extremely happy with it, love the extra padding underneath the body so the straps do not rub. Have not used it in the car yet, but looking forward to it.
  22. The Fly Swatter is the enemy in Oscar's mind and the dreaded AXE! They are pretty much the only two things he has a real issue with, and will bark constantly at them when they are in use.
