I thought giving extra progesterone in the first half of pregnancy caused bad side effects in the puppies. Everything I have read says you supplement after 4-5 weeks and only do so after blood tests that show the level is starting to fall

a dog comes no where near a child's life.

Regarding the bolded part, if this happened to dogs you were breeding from, would this action be enough to stop you from breeding from them in the future? I'm genuinely asking because I know breeders work hard to produce stable temperaments in their puppies so I'm wondering how this behaviour fits in temperament wise. No it would not stop me as I consider it a fairly normal reaction.

Managing Entire Male And Female

I live in suburbia and have never had stray dogs at my gate when I have had a bitch in season. Just never happened. -
why the injections?

The dogs may have shown no aggression until they had pups to protect. Yes stupid owner who did not not realise this and did not look after any of them properly. Dogs and pups should have been secure. My bitch would have killed any strange dog near her pups, the younger they were the more serious she would have been. Difference was I knew this and all were contained. Two dogs have paid the price for one owners stupidity and maybe one more.

agree

don't make this into a thing about extender leads. I'm not stupid and I use extender leads on greyhounds.

That is a draft and some breeds have been asked to leave at lunchtime and others asked to come in at lunch time so the OP needs to be careful

New Puppy Questions- The First Week And Establishing A Routine.
Rebanne replied to mfch's topic in Puppy Chat
ok you need to breathe :) You will have to get up to the puppy at least twice over night to start with to take him to the toilet, then once, then rarely. I would not confine him loose with the other dog. Either crate him in the laundry or take him to your ensuite. Personally I'd be having him separate to start with so he is not dependant on your other dog. Except for sleeping all my pups have had access to the house from the earliest days whilst I was home and could watch their every movement. Toilet training alone would ensure he is not left to his own devices for some time. If you can't watch him then he needs to be put outside or crated inside - crating only for short periods, not all day while everyone is at work or school. All my pups have just been put outside with the big dogs with no problems. Cats, just do what you did before, size makes no difference. People, do not have people over the first weekend and don't overwhelm him with hordes at other times. Relax and have fun! ETA do you really want your Mini let both dogs out over night seeing as how she can open the sliding door? -
I do have to say that every time the jehovah witness people visit my place they are very careful about shutting the gate even if I have shut the door in their face. And it is the owner's responsibility to ensure all gates are shut before letting the dogs out into the yard. She hasn't got a leg to stand on. Hope the Dr clears you of any serious damage and it's just bruising. Not that just bruising is acceptable either but you get my drift :)

And I'd be happy to helpful with that cost wise to. Many years ago I was walking my gap grey in a halti. We were approached by a large breed off lead dog. The dog was stalking us. I stopped and connected the lead to the collar and took off the halti. I wanted my dog to be able to fight back if needed. The idea of your on lead muzzled greys getting attacked and being unable to defend themselves makes me bloody furious.

exactly, dog just sitting there minding it's own business.

Yes true. If you have a dog that is DA then shouldn't you have it trained to a certain point before taking it into a environment full of dogs so stupid, distracted owners such as myself don't near lose there pup. This dog meant business!!!!! There is personal space, then there is a full on attack. Would you punch someone in the face if they stood to close to you in the checkout line?. Far out guys, I have repeatedly acknowledged my responsibility in this incident, I was in the wrong. I'm being jumped on because I say I think the other owner was responsible as well. well just cause you think the other dog was to blame doesn't mean we all do. How do you know it isn't trained to a certain standard and your stupidity has just set it back 10fold? Yes I might punch someone in the face at the checkout line if they ran up to me and invaded my space. How do I know what their intentions are?
-
Just because another dog likes its space does not make them DA. I don't like my personal space invaded so why should my dog?
-
The other owner had ample opportunity to move his dog. My pup entered the big dogs space, but the owner also had a slack lead for the dog to lunge. I'm not defending myself here, I know I stuffed up. Just got me thinking of legalities, two owners not on the ball and if an incident happens, i'd say 50/50 responsibility. how could he have ample opportunity to move his dog? He was sitting down and your dog went too close. Dogs can lunge even on a tight lead, you weren't watching you have no idea if he had a slack lead.
-
You were at fault for letting your dog approach so close to another. The other person was sitting down quietly with their dog. Doesn't have to be a DA dog at all. My dog was once sitting between my knees when another ran right up to her. My dog bit the other dog on the nose. She never moved from between my knees. Impossible to stop her in that split second, not my dog's or my fault at all and my dog was not DA. I saw the dog coming but didn't have time to get to my feet or anything and my dog never lunged, that's how quick the other dog moved right into her space and into her face.

do you need help to pay the ongoing vet costs? I am happy to send some dollars. Do not be ashamed to ask.
