My daughter has just adopted a greyhound and hes was treated with advocate before being released into her care. She has goggled and come up with this: Advocate may be safely applied to heartworm infected dogs, and therefore there is no absolute requirement for a heartworm test before commencing treatment. However, a diagnostic test for heartworm prior to commencement of treatment is recommended to ensure the optimum health of dogs. So my question is, should Finn still be tested for heartworm before starting on another preventative?

Chiropractic tuneups, acupuncture and ask about gold bead therapy. Lean but well muscled and the usual additives like glucosamine and yes the cartrophen injections are good as well.

We're thinking alike! mmm my first port of call is the muscle man My experience with greyhound muscle men has not been very good I have to say, you need to find someone who actually knows what they are doing. Miller has been having some growing pains and at the shows he was looked at by 2 muscle men, one said he had a fracture in his foreleg, the other said he had done his monkey muscle in the other leg but neither were right. Both highly recommended. Of course Miller has now broken his toe but that's a whole different story. I have had my dogs to one greyhound man, once, and he was okay (and cheap) and for general tuneups I suppose I would use him again but for anything a bit more in depth I always use Ian.

I am the opposite, if I think there is a skeletal/muscular problem I take my dog straight to the chiropractor. Helps he's a fully qualified vet as well. He is my first port of call if my dog is lame, sore, moving strangely etc. He is a specialist.

I'm so sad to hear this news and I've shed a few tears over it. As you say it would have been instant and Ruby wouldn't have known a thing, except for the sheer pleasure she must have felt at that moment. Thank you for giving her such a happy life. Please take care of yourselves and Tommy.

I believe the 2 issues could well and truly be related. Might be referred pain, might be out along the tail and the back. I will be interested to hear how you go.

I have a big hole in my back door so I can set it up that the dogs can get into the kitchen when I am away. The door from the kitchen to the rest of the house has a simple hook thingee on it, mainly to stop the door coming open accidently as I have 3 house cats.

If entering more than one dog on the day or one or more dogs in a 2 day show double check you are wearing the right number, for the right dog, for the right day

I feed them as I get them from the butcher, mine are rarely too fatty. Even the 12 week old greyhound pups love them!

as there are so few greyhounds around I don't have many people to ask or compare things with. ;) I was going by the whippet people and what they did. Hmm her next show is in a fortnight, might let them grow back, would be easier. But I still want something to do the skirt bit.

I've got the little Wahl pocket pro, but only use them for the tuck and tails, I use whisker whackers from Lea ( pm her ) to do the whiskers. I find that clippers take hair off the face and I think they bring on grey hairs quickly. Well I did wonder about the whiskers and giving too close a shave, I've only used scissors up till now. Except for a quick go the other day. I might stick with the scissors until I can see a whisker whacker up close, some people like them, some don't. I like the look of the pocket pro. I've only used clippers once on the tuck/skirt but it was so much easier to do them then using the scissors.

I did buy one of the Sheer Magic clippers and as they don't even work when plugged in, let alone hold any sort of charge I'm afraid I am not impressed. They are being returned on the weekend to the place I bought them from.

I'm no expert but lots of people told me I should cut the whiskers off. I resisted for the 1st two years then did cut them off. I don't think it made much difference personally. But trimming the skirt, in my eyes did. The line looked so much cleaner. I call that flap of skin from the hind leg to the belly the skirt. I call the furnishing down the hind legs the petticoat. I quite likely am using the wrong words but oh well Apparently I should also trim the petticoats as there is the odd hair that sticks out a smidge but I haven't been that game yet.

That rotten PPS has got to you hasn't she. :wink: I know, I know :rolleyes: Not sure that I can blame PPS, I first did it for the Royal last year, but maybe some of her rantings talk did sink in. I confess I couldn't believe how much difference trimming the skirt makes, I really like that look, so I tried the whiskers off as well and it's okay.

I am after something to do greyhound whiskers and skirts for the show ring. What would the groomers here recommend? I notice there are some Wahl ones on eBay but not sure which would be the better one.

yes trial and error :rolleyes: If he looks a bit thin just up his meals a bit for a week or so and the same if he gets a bit fat, slight decrease. If you can just feel his ribs as you run your hands lightly over them then he is in pretty good shape.

I got heaps and heaps of wire coat hangers cheap from a clothing store and cut them into "tent pegs" and used them to peg the chook wire down just like Miranda described

some more :D know what your dog is doing at all times, do not stand with friends talking while your dog is at the end of the leash being a pain. keep in season bitches in your gazebo, umbrella tent etc in a crate. Toilet her well away from the rings. Tell people near you that your bitch is in season so they can also keep their dogs away from yours. Do not saunter around the show with your bitch in tow. Ask the owners if it is alright to stand at the front of their gazebo trying to catch a bit of shade while waiting to go into the ring. Be a good sport!
