How did he end up in the pound anyway?

Diabetes needs to be monitored closely at first, because you need to work out the correct dosage of insulin and the blood glucose levels can fluctuate a fair bit. Once it is under control, the dog shouldn't need to be checked as regularly. But if she feels uncomfortable with this vet, she should definitely see someone else. There is no rule to say you can't change vets!

Puppy Or Kitten, What Should You Get First?
Kirty replied to kmaci's topic in General Dog Discussion
My worry would be a bouncy older puppy with a tiny new kitten. I also think your cat might feel more comfortable if it has a friend (ie another cat) to back it up with the puppy. -
If the younger bitch was only attacking when she came into season, then yes, desexing would help. But you have two females of a breed KNOWN to have dog-to-dog issues so in this case, I don't know that it would help much.

Puppy Or Kitten, What Should You Get First?
Kirty replied to kmaci's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would definitely get the kitten first, wait until it is settled and a bit bigger, then get the puppy (maybe when the kitten is 6mths old). -
I'm not exactly sure what you are asking? What does 'blob out a bit' mean? In terms of temperament, there should not be any real changes, except that she would obviously not come into season and therefore not have the mood swings sometimes associated with being in season. A desexed bitch should not be any heavier than an entire bitch - you control the food so you control her weight! If your dog is a small to medium breed, then it should be fully grown and fine to desex.

Rather than using the number of dogs bred, surely you should be looking at the number of dogs owned of each breed. But then I guess that would be difficult.

Family Members Sorting Out Their Place. How Much Is Too Much?
Kirty replied to melzawelza's topic in General Dog Discussion
My dogs have never (touch wood) had a serious fight, but I will let them sort out minor issues amongst themselves. They are allowed to protect their bowl or their bone within reason. If anyone over-reacts or gets narky, they lose the item. Sometimes the younger dogs will get too rowdy for the older ones and they scold them, and again, I allow that. But anything nasty gets corrected instantly. I think its important to note that I also *try* and step in BEFORE anything happens, to try and show my dogs that they don't need to get narky because I'll handle it. If I see a dog being too rowdy or trying to steal someone else's food, they will get told off. -
Did you have to register with Pet Plan? Its probably your rego number with them.

How does a terrier bite a man on the upper arm unless he is bending over?

My little Taylorbelle Milkcat was PTS tonight. Her mother was surrendered to me heavily pregnant and Taylorbelle was born under my daughters bed, with three other siblings. The other kittens grew up to be normal, happy kittens but Taylorbelle was different. She was raised with as much love and attention as any cat could want, but for some reason, as she grew up she became terrified of everything. We called her our little feral and we suspect she had a neurological problem. Her eyes were always dilated and she was constantly stressed. She lived here for 9 months but unfortunately her behaviour deteriorated in the last few weeks and she became quite aggressive and even more fearful. Tonight I made the horrible decision to have her PTS. My little Milkcat, I am so sorry I couldn't do more for you. If there was any way to help you, I would have done it. If love could have fixed you, you would have been perfect. I hope you can finally relax at the Bridge. I hope I've done the right thing. I'm so sorry.

Oh I know Kate. Will ask her about it next time I bump into her.

A lady I know bought two staffy pups for the kids - less than 12 months later, both bitches were keen to kill each other. They were both desexed at 6 months old. I think they kept them seperate for a while but ended up giving one away. I have three bitches here and so far *touch wood* no issues. But I keep a very close eye on them.

How does one get involved in herding? I'd be interested in getting my foster dog into it...
-
We were always told to hose their mouth out if the dogs got a toad (my old family dog caught dozens of them!). If she is alert and happy, I'd keep an eye on her but if she changes at all, I'd go straight to the vet. How far away from the vet are you?

I have always had crossbreeds or different breeds. We have had Great Danes, Greyhound, Kelpie, Border Collie cross, Labrador cross, Dalmatian, and fostered lots of others. The Great Dane is the only breed I've owned (by choice) more than once. I enjoy owning different breeds but I have to say that after owning Pia, I will always have at least one Greyhound. I think fostering has been great because its given me a taste of lots of different breeds and helped me decide what I like (and what I definitely DON'T like!). I have found Pia to be very different to any other breed I've owned and I just love her. :D

Is Anyone Looking For A New Sports Dog?
Kirty replied to Kirty's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Sorry for the sideways photos, I have rotated them but Photobucket is being crap. I'll try to fix them later. -
Sorry to post here, but I am fostering a very special dog who I just KNOW will excel at dog sports. She a 10 month old working lines BC called Dash. She is the softest, most lovely little dog who is so eager to please. She is very very bright! She desperately needs something to do so if you (or someone you know) are after a dog to do herding, agility, obedience, etc with please consider Dash! She shows good natural herding ability (just ask my cats and rabbits!!) and is learning basic obedience very quickly. She is not interested in balls or toys yet (she didn't have any toys growing up) but she is easy to motivate with treats or even just praise. Please send me a pm or an email at [email protected] if you would like to know more.

I had this happen to me, so I just opened a new Photobucket account. Problem solved.

Insurance Won't Pay Claim For Skin Condition

The other thing to remember though is that you still have to pay for it up-front anyway, and then hope that your claim will be paid. -
Insurance Won't Pay Claim For Skin Condition
Kirty replied to bianca.a's topic in General Dog Discussion
I know someone who got a kitten and in the first week they brought it home, it peed on their bed. Quite common with baby kittens, they get a bit involved in a game and leave it too late to reach the litter box. Anyway, the owner made the mistake of mentioning it to the vet when the kitten had its next vaccination. They took out insurance around this time. Fast forward about 8 months, the cat got a urinary tract infection. They submitted their claim but it was rejected because the insurance company claimed that OBVIOUSLY when the kitten peed on the bed, it had a UTI then as well... Absolutely disgusting. I think people are better off getting an emergency credit card or putting some money away each week. -
I had a kitten with aspiration pneumonia and he survived too. He was a weak little bugger so if he can make it, Chase DEFINITELY can!! Big hugs to you and Chase.
