  1. yeast --- it occurs naturally but sometimes there is an abundance of it on the dog's body; it is very itchy and so the dog licks and chews; it can become worse in warm and humid weather... it is best to treat it and as dancinbcs said above, the colour will grow out once you make some changes to your dog's diet... limit the carbos in its food and lessen the amount of sugar also --- yeast thrives in warm weather and sugars in the diet feed it... use a medicated shampoo [several on the market that deal with inter alia anti-fungal] but take care also to keep your dog's feet clean of pollens and other toxins it will likely pick up during walks --- a foot bathas described here will likely benefit... malaseb diluted in water is another method. good luck and keep us informed
  2. the ad is hysterical and beautiful --- i had a smile a mile wide across my face from start to finish; thank you ruthless... i absolutely adore both breeds so it didn't matter which of them stood tallest at the end i had the pleasure of spending some time with a pair of rescued whippets a week or so ago and well, kirislin, the photos of tag are just a pleasure to behold. and the last photo? omg! thank you also my two dogs are my absolute favourites in the whole wide world, and even tho i love most dogs, there's a really special place in my heart for staffs and whippets; and iggies too... i like this thread
  3. firstly, i just wanna wish you good luck in your endeavours i seriously hope you find a solution! and secondly, all's i wanna say is by GOD, she is gorgeous... if i had the place, the room, the space; i would have one exactly like her
  4. hi that sounds and looks like a great product! and at a great price too!!! don't be fooled tho that the safety guard will hold the nail in place --- it won't, because the dog's toe is not rigid... i wanted to go the cheap route and so i got a pedi paws [w/12 extra grinding rings] for $11 plus postage --- i did that cuz if my dogs didn't take to it, i'd have not blown too much cash on it... get your dog used to having its feet handled --- i don't know what it'd be like with a bigger breed because i have 2 swfs [up to 8kg each] and i don't think you'd have much success using it on cats! trimming kitty's nails anyway, i got my 2 dogs used to it by laying it beside them, treat, turning it on, treat, stroking them, treat and so on and on and on, and then came the day and it worked sooooo well that i'm glad that i no longer have to worry about the effects that nail clipping has on my dogs i put one of their cushions on the table, had them drop and rolled onto their side on the cushion which made it comfy for them and which gave me free access to their feet [with a pile of yummy treats near their nose]... it takes a bit of getting used to for the operator by virtue of the fact that the toes aren't rigid and so you need to hold each toe quite deftly while you grind --- there's a bit of a smell too but it's not so unpleasant be careful too that the fur on the dog's feet isn't too long so as to get wrapped around the grinder... two things about the pedi paws tho is that the grinder is quite large [about the size of a .20c piece] and it takes two 9volt batteries... i hope i've helped and i wish you good luck
  5. hi riverstar and thanks for your input too good advice --- i struggled finding time this week and now reading your post, i'd be better off having his teeth cleaned properly and then use the brush periodically thereafter. i'll take another look at his teeth and assess from there. thanks again
  6. thanks roar kingdom for taking the time to answer his right-side back teeth aren't terribly bad and today i spent just short of $20 on some doggy toothpaste and two finger brushes --- i've already introduced the paste, quickly followed by a treat, and by following that routine over the next few days or so, i hope to start brushing early to mid next week. i include raw lamb/beef ribs, neck and some marrow bones in their diet along with chunks of raw stewing steak mixed with raw/cooked vegies but i do incorporate high-end processed along with dry to offer some variety ... it's not that he doesn't chew on both sides of his mouth; it's that he chews more on his left side. [his teeth are a helluva lot better than they were when we adopted him.] at the time i was on my way out of the exam room when i noticed a brochure on dental health and it was then that the vet [a locum] said she'd checked his teeth but didn't indicate anything serious, so i took her advice to 'consider' brushing OR have it done under sedation --- i didn't think to ask her about jaw/tooth discomfort! again, thanks for your input i've taken on board your advice and if brushing doesn't do the job, then i'll take it further...
  7. damn it! he does look like a nice dog really! i love rotties, but this vid puts the breed in a 'dangerous' place... completely unnecessary *spits*
  8. wrong on enuf levels to make a difference... i'm off to report it.
  9. hello my boy byron chews mostly on one side of his mouth, the left. he had a visit to the vet the other day and a dental check proved that his [not very good] right back teeth aren't being 'used' as much as his [really nice and white] left back teeth! byron is a mixed breed [a rescue] and has, but not badly, 'bunched' teeth on both sides at the back of his mouth. i've known this from day dot and always gave him bones and other chewables. he loves his bones! his vet gave me the option; brush/clean or have him sedated for a teeth cleaning! if you brush your dog's teeth, what do you use? is it successful? would a dab of doggy toothpaste on a cotton cloth work? would the cotton, being soft yet course, be effective? he has a small mouth and i think the brushes i've looked at would be too big?!?! tia edited to clear up some confusion :p
  10. comfortis, in my view, is the best for all-year-round flea protection --- i dose with capstar if i see any intermittent adult fleas on their bodies. capstar is a 'kill em now' drug that can be used in conjunction with comfortis [and other flea products, just check the compatibility first] and i only use it when it's needed on a day by day basis... i agree that capstar isn't cheap but you wouldn't be using it on a regular basis --- i only use it if and when there's an influx; if i saw a flea or two on one of my dogs i would dose with a capstar tab and that would deal with it then the comfortis would continue working it's magic just a word of warning: advantix is toxic to cats so if you have cats, or cats that come into contact with your dogs, you'd be best placed to stay away from advantix

  12. nadine, from what i understand, pups as young as 9 months old can be fed an adult food, as long as it's a good quality product! if that's your concern, then you need to make further enquiries as to what you should feed your dog you should speak with your vet or a dog nutritionist --- a 20 m/o dog still on puppy food dropping weight on an adult diet doesn't sound right to me...
  13. yukult is high in sugar so i recommend care just sayin'
  14. good luck stonecutter --- i really hope the prognosis is good despite this being a serious discussion *laughed out really loud*
  15. i don't know that you can actually dictate when a [your] dog will gladly chew a bone! it's not my experience at least i always supervise my dogs [and my cat] chewing bones and i never allow either of my dogs [or my cat] to chew at a bone unless i'm available to step in --- like yesterday when bobbie [the cat] had a tooth stuck in a lamb rib and she struggled to dislodge it so i helped her out... bob customarily consumes lamb ribs without issue --- it's a wholly consumable bone, but despite her level of success, i never leave her alone with one; the same with my two dogs...
  16. part 2/2 of dr becker's interview with dr jean dodds has been added to the opening post...
  17. My cat LOVES the canine BH. She gets a couple of pieces every few days, when she sneaks some or I give her a little treat. She's been eating it since last year and no harm has come to her. Or when I'm making the dog meals and some falls to the floor, my feline sweeps in and eats it. I don't think a small amount here and there is an issue. thanks for that
  18. clinky i'll add the 2nd part of the interview once it's available -------------------- part 2
  19. my cat is eating some of what my dogs' have left in their bowls. i take the bowl/s up when i hear her at their bowl [and it's usually when she has none of her own black hawk left in her bowl; she's on a diet of sorts]. apart from the obvious differences between the two varieties, and of course the lack of taurine in the dog variety, will my cat's casual munching of 'black hawk dog' cause any issue for her? thanks
  20. this link informs that novartis is expanding their US market by producing their first spot-on flea and tick preventatives for cats and dogs. both contain fipronil, as does frontline, which is available in australia...
  21. oh, i meant to add this link but i'm sure you've already read it...
