  1. Saw on the TV news and in the paper that a pet shop was broken into and 4 Cockapoo puppies worth tens of thousands of dollars, were stolen from a Camberwell pet shop in Melbourne. Some were 9 weeks old and some were 7 weeks old. It was stated in the newspaper that being so young, the puppies needed constant care. It seems not because it appears they were in their glass enclosure for the night. Would the store owner be held responsible or the so called breeder for having 7 week old puppies for sale? I would hope that both parties be investigated and perhaps prosecuted.
  2. I I'm glad to report that Elliot is much improved. They eye medication which he needs until tomorrow seems to have cleared his eye and it looks like this was the cause of his pain. He's back to his old self, rumbling and tumbling with the pup and has stopped the 'star gazing'. It's all good.
  3. What an amazing innings. Happy birthday Gilly and hats off to you Gillybob for a job more than well done
  4. Elliot was at the vet this morning and he has an eye infection for which she prescribed medication and she found that he had a 'stiff' back for which he had acupuncture. I think he was reacting to the pup because of the pain. Hopefully he will be back to normal very soon.
  5. My older mini schnauzer Elliot who is 6 has started standing still and looking up at the ceiling for no apparent reason. On another doggy forum, another mini schnauzer was doing this and a comment was that it was a type of epilepsy. I will be going to the vet with Elliot, but in the meantime can anyone enlighten me? He has at times, become 'snappy' with his puppy housemate but no damage has been done. This is probably due to the pup being in his face. Other than that, he is happy to go to the park and is eating and drinking asusual. I lost another boy in November at 10 yrs and frankly it has me scared to the core.
  6. Honestly, I don't know why you took the path that you did. We bought in a new puppy about 7 weeks ago and the resident dog at first imagined the pup was here for a play date. All went beautifully. Next morning resident boy Elliot basically said to newcomer, Leroy 'what, are you still here?' They would play for about 5 minutes and Elliot cool off the play ignore Leroy and warn him if he got in his face. Move on a week and all is love and mostly serenity. Leroy, the pup was taught manners among other things and that's the way it should be. As Juice said, you have now allowed your pup to claim his place and he believes his is higher on the ladder. As Perse mentioned a good training set up is what is needed now, and personally, I wouldn't delay as your Daxy is the one who is going to suffer.
  7. Just wondering if the aggression could be a neurological problem. I do hope there is an answer and all goes well for your little one.
  8. Only Leroy is in a crate until he can be trusted at night and while we are out during the day. Elliot has the run of the house, day and night. Today, it seems there is not problem with this toy mainly because they have so many to choose from. Hopefully it will continue this way as yesterday was the first time this 'problem' occurred.
  9. We have a new puppy Leroy, to keep Elliot company after we lost Jasper. They get on beautifully but today I noticed that the stuffed toy I bought for Leroy to cuddle into and sleep with in his crate at night is in Elliot's sights and he is guarding this toy and keeping Leroy away, even though there are many toys around the house. Leroy loves this toy too and trying to prevent world war 3, I took it away from them. Advice please.
  10. I have just gotten a puppy to accompany an older dog and yes, even one is 'hard work' and I wouldn't get two puppies at the same time, but that's me. I must say I admire someone who can cope with two and maybe it's my age and I'm not up to it. Sometimes, I wonder why the hell I got one lol. Needless to say, my puppy is gorgeous and he is brightening up our lives resident dog included with his baby antics and I wouldn't have it any other way. Puppyhood is over and done with in a blink of the eye.
  11. I'm sure it was meant as a light hearted throw away quote
  12. The OP also says the pair are in love. I would imagine that any bitch on heat will lead to the pair being in love. Not trying to be nit pickcing but fact of life.
  13. I am not a breeder or associated in any way with German Shepherds. My choice of breed is the Miniature Schnauzer. Many years ago, my family's first mini cost us $800, and at the time, we thought wow, that's a lot of money. Several years later our next boy was $1250. At the present time, they are anywhere from $2500 - $3500 for a pet. Even with such a price tag, I would NEVER consider going to a backyardie as you put it. The dedicated breeder I imagine goes to a great deal of trouble with health checks and research in an attempt to better the breed, not just put this to that for monetary gain. In the long run, I personally don't think it's worth trying to save at the purchase stage and then possibly get lumbered with medical vet bills later on, not to say that it doesn't happen with registered breeder purchased pups. At least with the registered breeder, you have someone to lean on for help, advice and support.
  14. I'm also sending you and your family big hugs. Even though Claudia is so young, it's the quality, not the quantity and I'm sure in your heart you know, you are doing the best thing for your little girl. It's always a hard decision but rest assured, she is going to a better place to be free of her demons. Take care and know we are all thinking of you.
  15. So sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel when you lose a soulmate.
  16. In my municipality the maximum number is supposedly 5 dogs per walker. The amount of them just standing around and chatting with other walkers or on mobile phones for most of the time is astounding. People pay a lot of money per session and I can see it is a total waste of money except for a few dedicated walkers who do the right thing. I think some so called walkers come for their own social interaction rather than for the dogs they are in charge of. That's why I take mine for their enjoyment and that's my quality time with and for them.
  17. Well I have another incident to relay. I take my boy to the park and whilst there, I heard an almighty bang. Turned towards the noise thinking it was a vehicle collision but didn't notice anything unusual, until a dog came racing towards me and a dog walker yelling out to me to grab the dog as he'd been hit by a car. There was no chance I could have done that as he was running around wildly and several people tried to catch him. I question WHY she parked her car on the main road when the park has off street parking bays and why this dog was off lead when she arrived at the park. I wouldn't like to be in her shoes when she has to tell the owner what happened to her precious pet. Hopefully the poor boy came out of this unscathed. On another note, I wonder if the dog walker would be responsible for the damage caused to the car by the collision.
  18. I have always had male dogs together. Always had them desexed and have never had a problem with any of them. After losing our older boy 3 weeks ago, we are looking to get another puppy and again have opted for a male. One of the breeders we got one of our puppies from noted that the females are not called bitches for nothing but I can't vouch for that lol.
  19. There are so many irresponsible a holes around and I just don't get it that they think all is OK. The day Jasper was put down, hubby, me and our remaining mini schnauzer drove past our local park and decided to take Elliot for a short run after saying goodbye to our beloved Jasper. There was a young fellow with a staffy a fair distance from us but I had a bad feeling about this dog. He bolted over to Elliot who growled and showed his disapproval. The owner of the staffy came over and yelled at us that our dog was very aggressive and should be on a lead. Mind you his dog wasn't wearing a collar!!!! I told him that my boy didn't like his dog and the way he approached. I was told that he didn't like me, the owner, not the dog. He also commented that if my dog made another sound, he would crack his neck. That's when i replied that's the reason I didn't like him. No wonder his dog was aggressive. Like father, like son. You have to wonder why some breeds get a bad reputation. I must add that my mini schnauzer often plays with staffys at the park with no problems whatsoever and is a very sociable and gregarious boy. He just didn't like that particular one.
  20. Thanks all. That's the only good thing about all of this. My precious boy will no longer suffer through these very frightening seizures. I know it's only very early days but I see him, hear him and feel him by my side and around the house. Today I took Elliot, his housemate to the park and I imagined seeing him there too. I miss him so much and so does Elliot.
  21. Thank you all for your good wishes. I broke down when I saw him on the hospital table connected to all the drips and machines. He looked so vulnerable and beaten. His breathing was very laboured because he had vomited and gone into his lungs. (I'm sorry I can't think of the correct term at the moment). The vet said he had a lot of complications and his prognosis was not good. I had no other choice but to let him go peacefully. RIP my gorgeous friend and heart dog. We will always love and remember you.
  22. Please, keep him in your thoughts. Jasper started having seizures from around 3 yrs old but not often. He would have one and then go about 2 yrs without another one. Yesterday, he started having cluster seizures so down to emergency we went. By time I took him there around 8pm he had 5 lots but when he came out of them, you wouldn't know what he had been through. Tail wagging but I must say he was more clingy than usual and panting. I left him there so he could be monitered and they called me to say he was on a drip and heavily sedated because he had another seizure and wasn't responding to the medication. He was also on oxygen. They indicated that they would try to bring him around slowly and the discussion turned to if there was no improvement to let him go peacefully. This morning, I spoke with the vet and was told that they are slowly trying to bring him slowly and if successful would most likely need to stay 24 - 36 hours with them. Also, MRI was mentioned to see if there was a tumor present but this could only be seen if it was reasonably sized. OMG, you wake up one day with what you believe to be a perfectly healthy dog and within hours he's in critical care and not certain of the future. Sometimes life sucks and this is one of those times.
  23. With each of our new puppies, we went straight to raw but only on one protein at a time for the first couple of weeks or so. We didn't have any problems with this.
