  1. ABC summary report. Beautiful looking child. A quote from RSPCA Qld spokesperson acknowledges it as an awful tragedy. Adds no need to 'demonise' German Shepherds or all dogs. http://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/19593360/three-year-old-boy-korbin-sprott-dies-after-dog-attack-at-mackay-home/
  2. Yes.... it's why toddlers are in the highest risk group. Their heads/faces/necks are close to the level of the dog's jaws. Their skin & tissues are less thick. As you say, even just one bite, means they're at high risk for severe injury or death & disfigurement.
  3. I know what research, with owner cooperation, has achieved for a condition that can be found in my breed of interest. So best wishes for results that will help.
  4. Yes, another reason why young children are so vulnerable & are in the highest risk group. Their heads, face, neck are on a level with the dog. And their skin/tissues are not as tough as an adults. So injuries from dog bites will be more severe & disfiguring. Can't comment further on this case.... as we don't know the details. So sad, such a dear little boy.
  5. Good on you for posting about this, Tazar. And I think it was a fair thing that you helped out the lady whose heart was in the right place to rescue a pet shop pet. A pet owner I know was horrified to see puppies of our breed of interest in a store for over twice the price of those from excellent registered breeders. Being outspoken, she made that observation at top note ... adding that the puppies didn't look anything like the quality from registered breeders. Stomping outside... she had an attack of the guilts. The poor little puppies were the meat in this awful sandwich & maybe her outburst had affected their rehoming options. So she went back in & added , 'But they're nice little puppies & need a loving home like any other dogs'. The store, by the way, was crowded. Just adding, I find a lot of pet owners don't know that they can buy direct from registered breeders ... or think that it's only other 'show people' who can buy from them at some imagined enormous prices. Would be good to get better information out to the pet buying public.
  6. Minxy, that pic of your own Akita is stunning. :)
  7. Little Legs Rescue Qld took in Cody, a Shih Tzu & Susie, a Tibetan Spaniel, when their owner went into care. Both are much loved 12 yr olds. Safe with a great foster-carer until they get a new home, together. Cody & Susie are devoted soul mates. Cody just had a dental operation & here's a video of Susie comforting him: BTW I think Susie might be a very good purebred. She's the image of our Qld bred, Angel, who was an Australian Champion. Her carer says she's very healthy, looks hardly 8 years old and is confident & loving.
  8. Lovely pic of fire fighter looking after an injured sugar glider until they could get it to WIRES. Great people, great work.
  9. WIRES would be a great organisation to support after these fires. Thanks for the heads-up.
  10. Thank you, again. I didn't know about this. Shall spread word.
  11. A fantastic initiative. Good to see other States do similar (if they're not already).
  12. Elvis, the Great Dane's family at Yandina, have posted a Lost advertisement on Gumtree: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/yandina/lost-found/lost-blue-great-dane-/1029073811
  13. Biggest possible . Thanks for the feedback ... seems Bill will not be visiting Brisbane, unfortunately.
  14. We've got a case where the company of other dogs makes a difference. Only-dog tibbie, Lily. next door is terrified of storms, it's the sound of the thunder. She shakes & frets & wants to be picked up by her owner. But put her over the fence with our 2 tibbie girls... & she changes. It's as if she's saying 'I worry about storms at my house. Not my job to worry about storms for this house.' Our 2 girls aren't worried at all. BTW in difficult cases, I agree with DD. Nothing like 1/4 Valium.
  15. Yes! Can't resist a pic of Mal puppies from the Amberley program:
  16. Have a look at the Military Working Dogs, purpose-bred at Amberley Air Base in Qld. German Shepherds & Belgians. Movement is of prime importance with these dogs. This program has been in operation for some time now: https://www.facebook.com/RAAF.MWD
  17. Boronia, 'aging' is the American spelling. Other places, like UK & Australia, it's 'ageing'. So strictly speaking that 'ageing' is correct. But these days, because of all the interconnectedness, both forms tend to pop up in Australia. Back to topic. That's a great article & it's so good to see pets being included in the lives of the elderly. The Positive Ageing in the Company of Animals project has a website. Scroll down to list of ways we can all help: http://www.awla.com.au/awla-in-action/campaigns/aged-care/
  18. Wonderful news! I love the look on his face. 'Aren't I a clever boy, I found my way home!' Which he is, too. Big hugs for the Super Smart Mr Huxley. Even tho' he gave his family a hundred heart attacks. You must be so relieved.
  19. There's the quality of life score... even before the other cruciate ligament. Says it all IMO. Never easy when you're the owner. But that's my criterion.... quality of life score plus fact the condition can only worsen.
  20. I'm so sorry. You're sure doing everything you can . Just adding, take your other dogs out on the search. Frightened lost dogs will sometimes come to the 'scent' of their mates. Also put a sign & poster on your own fence .... local people going past might notice. And a pile of dog dry food at your gate. I guess he's microchipped. Article in our AWLQld newsletter told how a family lost their tibbie on a fireworks night (rammed thro' a closed doggie door). The dad got the word MISSING added to the dog's microchip data. (I didn't even know you can do that). 8 months later, someone dropped off a small dog to the AWL, saying that someone else couldn't keep it any more. When AWL scanned for microchip.... up came MISSING with the tib's family's contact details. Big reunion.
  21. Yes, Golden Ark Rescue is great (like their dog treats!). And they've got the most brilliant advertising for foster-carers. Who could resist :) : https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=592360294143323&set=a.187649281281095.42980.187454044633952&type=1&theater
  22. That might be Golden Ark Rescue. Located just south of Brisbane, they service the whole state. But say they'll deal with other states, too. They're associated with a dog treat bakery.... that's a fund-raiser. The treats are great quality. All info on their website, including current Goldies for adoption & the treats. http://gara.org.au/ Their Facebook page is a delight. They need more foster-carers in SE Qld: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Golden-Ark-Rescue-Aust-Inc/187454044633952
