  1. Bit O/T, but I saw a Standard Poodle step in & do this in an unusual way. At Million Paws Walk we were sitting next to people who had a p/b Standard Poodle. He was lovely, confident with people & strange dogs walking by & happy about our little Tibbie girls sitting close by. A strange dog came by (on leash) & wanted to stir up the little dogs (for play, not aggressive). When they didn't respond, the dog took to barking at them. To all our amazement, the Standard Poodle jumped in front of the Tibbies & gave a very business-like bark.... that clearly said, 'Leave the little ladies alone, buster!' People around were so touched .... someone said there's chivalry in the dog world. :)
  2. I was so proud of my little Tibetan Spaniel girls when we rounded a corner at the pet supplies store & walked bang into a huge Tibetan Mastiff. My girls stopped & did a gentle sniff.... then it was light bulb moment. Their tails started to wag .... 'You're a fellow countryman! I'm also proud of them last thing at night when they're lying in their comfy beds, sound asleep. I only have to say, 'Toilet, ladies!'. And they stagger to their feet, still half asleep, and toddle downstairs to go to the toot.
  3. I love the way Benji gravitated towards the age group he knew well... older people at the nursing home. Such a lovely story of a great bond between a man & his dog.
  4. Good on your friend, too. That would've been another marvellous home. Bloody puppy farms!
  5. Please pass on heaps of congratulations from me, too. I couldn't be happier... Nana Pom has a happy ending to her story, just like Nana Tibbie. Both have gone to experiened dog people. Our lad & his wife owned both a Newfie, Jake, & a Mini-Foxy, Rosie. Guess who ruled the roost. :)
  6. What about Varicool? What about Nana Pom going into foster as an honorary Tibbie? :D :D Thank god she is in Brisbane ............. DD, Nana Pom is at Yagoona RSPCA in Sydney. Just happenstance that both Don & the Nana Tibbie are in Qld.
  7. Don, good on you for highlighting this little darling. She's beautiful. Can that RSPCA get her out to foster-care? Or can one of the rescues that cherish little older dogs get her out.... or is that not policy? I'd like this little Nana Pom to get the same happy ending as a Nana Tibbie (13 yrs) who just got adopted to a perfect home from AWL Qld. Note the warm baby blanket so her bottom wouldn't be on the cold floor. I'm so grateful to AWL Qld. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151409508897547&set=a.10150336240767547.343632.157104907546&type=1&theater How can we help Nana Pom?
  8. I've always said that animal cruelty enforcement should be completely done by officers employed directly in the government dpt that has to oversee the laws. In other words, a a fully funded public service... like the police... not a charity. The CEO RSPCA Qld said publicly that his personal view was that the law enforcement function should be separated out from their animal welfare work. But not likely to happen here.... or many other places in the current economic climate.
  9. Well, it'd not only be animal welfare decisions that citizens might want to have reviewed ... so it seems odd that those states don't have any processes for internal and especially external review of decisions made by any governmental body... or one partly funded by government (like a state's RSPCA).
  10. Yes, this is also an issue for me. Are you referring to whatever is available under NSW legislation? I've pointed out that there are appeal/review courses of action written into the law in Q'ld. So RSPCA Qld operates in a context where there are processes for appeal and review. Below the level of courts.
  11. Aw.... that's so cute. And I love the name Dahlia for a pretty pitbull. :) One in the eye for the still ignorant who believe pitbull equals invariable killing machine.
  12. Legislation is a State matter. As a Victorian, are you referring to your state? Processes of appeal & review are written into Qld's Animal Care & Protection Act 2001. Which means they're part of the law. People can access an internal review with the executive body (relevant Minister & Dpt) that oversees the Act. If that is insufficient, they can access external appeal to the Qld Civil & Administrative Tribunal (QCAT).. Both are 'below' the level of courts. All of which means it's important to refer to a particular state's RSPCA & whatever legislation & appeals processes are available. In addition to those legislation- supported review processes in Qld, there's also another little known state law that permits appeal by citizens against decisions/moves by all sorts of state/local government.... & even partly state-funded... bodies. Called Judicial Review Act. I once showed it to parents of a disabled child who disagreed (with good reason) with a departmental decision on school location. They cited it.... & decision was changed. http://www.premiers.qld.gov.au/publications/categories/policies-and-codes/handbooks/welcome-aboard/member-duties/judicial-review.aspx
  13. April.... pretty name for a pretty girl.
  14. Quite right. Canberra's RSPCA has a good reputation. And I saw the CEO at the 'Ban Live Export' march on Sunday, walking his pretty pit bull girl. Now that cheers my heart.
  15. Good on you, Lillypilly, for making direct contact & providing some mentoring. Sounds like Rachelle is happy to keep in touch with you. I've always respected how you cut to the chase & go directly to whoever has the power to solve a problem.
  16. We support both AWL Qld & RSPCA Qld. There's differences in roles for both. In regard to Tibetan Spaniels, RSPCA Qld's been good. When a couple of Tibbies were overwhelmed by (separate) shelter conditions, they let them go to 2 excellent small breed rescues. Where they thrived in domestic settings with dogs of their own kind. And found just the right forever homes. Both purebred. Some shelters put high prices on dogs like these ( can't blame them... it's like 'market value'). But these dogs were dealt with, for their best interests. I also find their Behaviour & Training Unit's Hotline very helpful & understanding re both dogs & cats. I've put quite a few people on to them. Everyone can make up their own mind & also consider there are state differences.
  17. Short answer... yes. Annie & Nina Zena, the Tibbies, and Sarah the cat.
  18. Yes, I've been amazed how quickly our dogs have adapted to a new name. And the name doesn't have to be like the old one. Just call the dog by the new name from the start.... & reward with attention, treats, pats & cuddles for responding. Dogs adjust so well that all of ours respond to their nicknames, too.... which are nothing like their regular names. When we had 2 Shelties & 2 Tibbies.... they'd even answer to their 'breed' names. Call 'Shelties' & the shelties would come. 'Tibbies', & they would come. Our present Tibbie, Annie, has a party trick where she comes tail wagging if someone says 'I love you!'. But then she also answers to Abbaface (she came from Sweden). :)
  19. Me, too, & I've only seen her photo. :)
  20. I'm so sorry, kirty. That would have been awful for you & Toby. Bad enough that you were both so shaken, but sheer luck prevented the child or Toby from being badly injured. Little kid trying to hang on could've been slammed into something ... or Toby could've been ripped. If someone knows they have a dog-aggressive dog, they have to think twice about taking it out in public. And how to keep it tightly restrained. A bit O/T, but you said Toby is a Standard Poodle. Lovely, lovely dogs. We sat next to one at Million Paws Walk & it was a delight with strangers & other dogs. When another dog (wanting to play, not aggressive) did a 'stir up' bark at our 2 Tibbie girls, this SP stepped in front of them & gave a polite, but firm, 'leave the ladies alone' bark. Everyone around was chuffed. Give Toby a big pat for me. Standard Poodles are brilliant dogs & it's a crying shame that he's been targeted by aggressive dogs.
  21. I see that tibetan spaniels are listed under small companion dogs. Their accident rate is 1/5 death from old age. As others have said, reflects breed traits & how that leads to how they're kept. Tibs tend to be inside dogs... in-home companions. So less likely to encounter the perils of the outside world.
  22. I love Bazza's face... it's like he's saying, 'I do like this stuff called sunshine!' Narla & all her bubs look so well and so gorgeous. All the foster aunts & uncles seem to agree. :)
  23. She sure was, thanks to how well your doggie behaved. And I second that a reward treat is in order. And good on you, for searching out Milkshake's owners. I love the name, too. It must be bigger than she is. :)
  24. Good thinking, LG. Someone who knows her is on the AWL Facebook page... she knew the little dog's name.
  25. I'm trying to track down a lady who's just knitted some dog coats that she brought into AWL Qld on the Gold Coast. Just the kind of coat... for the night-time... that I'd like for our tibbies. By sheer coincidence, the coat was modelled by a tibbie (she or a friend must own him), My girls don't like the tighter dog coats:
