  1. Cremation- you keep the ashes Disposal- you don't
  2. As nice as it would be to have such a large rainy day fund, I'm sure not everyone can just have 10k casually lying around in their bank accounts. I think insurance is a good idea for lots of people, I'm sure it saves a lot of heartbreak. That said I don't have it yet, I keep saying 'yeah let's get it' then reading too much into it and getting scared off.
  3. I live nearby and I go to : Marion Animal Hospital 827 Marion Road Mitchell Park SA 5043 It was highly reccomended by other DOLers that the vets there were good. I've been impressed with both the people I saw there. Can't remember the name of the last guy I saw but he was very charismatic, a great pleasure. They're open weekends and public holidays too, so it's piece of mind for me my regular vet is also my emergency vet. Oh wow didn't realise how old this thread is. My ideas still stand for anyone else who wants a good vet ;)
  4. I doubt it'll be any cheaper. Reckon a ten day stay will cost the same (or more) than a 30 day stay.
  5. Now that could be interesting  Well keely's a sighthound right ;) They're run separately so no other dogs will interfere with each other. Much safer :)
  6. Have a look in your library. I found a great book in mine about 'dogscaping' ( I think that may have been the title) It was a little too ambitious though since I rent, so I resisted the urge to borrow it
  7. Who needs a cheersquad ;) Should bring Keely out for a run too :)
  8. So sorry to hear this
  9. Agree 100% your dog your rules. Going against the grain here but I do think that roughhousing type play can still be done without nessasarily 'ruining' your dog. OH's family dog a bitza with staffy in him would only engage in that type of play when OH was wearing gloves. (Either his boxing gloves or these really strong tradie gloves) He knows gloves + ok command = ok to rough house. No gloves= no mouth on hands If I wanted this type of play to stop I'd go up to the perpetrator and start (lightly) smacking him around the head saying and asking him how much he enjoyed it
  10. I don't think it would upset anyone. It wouldn't bother me. I think the basis of the thread just started to find out if other breeds could give coursing a go. It was a lot of fun, even if Esky managed to 'do a husky' on me
  11. I wonder if I should do something to make her more stimulated? I think she's loving the fact that someone is now home all the time, so she sleeps
  12. I could believe there is some husky in there ;)
  13. If you've got a good career advisor at school might be worth having a chat with them, as they'll probably know about all the grants available to young people in your area.
  14. I agree with others about doing some further study into business as well as doing your animal cert. You might even be able to get some work in kennels while you study, or just doing shelter work at the RSPCA will help you decide whether this is the career for you. Not saying it isn't right for you, but I've done a couple of tafe courses and came out at the end finding out theres no career in that industry or that the industry isn't for you. Have a look into the grants that the government is offering to small business owners/ new businesses. An employee of my partner recently left his job because the he got some great fundings/ incentives to help him take his business to the next level.
  15. If sleeping was an olympic sport Esky would win gold, silver and bronze. She sleeps like a pro. Not sure if it's normal though. For example two nights ago she went to bed with OH at 11pm, I got home and went to bed at around 2am and woke up at around 11. She wasn't up until I kicked her off ( speaking in metaphors) at 2pm. That feels like a looong time, close to 15 hours and no loo break or anything. Please tell me she's not the only sleepysaurus rex
  16. I'd want the absolute least time possible in quarantine ( don't see why you would want them there any longer) Armahani is that budget including the purchase price of the dog as well? I was expecting to need around 10k for everything. *gulp*
  17. Thanks Wayrod, I thought it was a longer wait with the rabies vacc. Ptolomy did you have to pay boarding or anything on top of the $5000 + purchase price?
  18. Still undecided on that Parkeyre, by the time a puppy got through the whole process of coming from the US it would be arounf the 10 month mark, so almost grown up anyway. I guess the puppy would have boarding costs attached to be considered where an adult for sale may not.
  19. Seeing as we're talking quarantine today, prompts me to ask the questions I've been wondering for a while. Wondering if those folks experienced with importing could give me a run down of approximate costs of importing. The hypothetical dog is a medium breed, about 22-24 inches being bought in from the USA. So costing wise what do I have to consider. Put the purchase price at $1000 say Cost of quarantine in Aus at present around $1600-$1700 Flights I've got no idea? And the rest? I'm sure I'll have more questions but this is a start ( I have done a search but I haven't found a breakdown of costs. Trying to work out whether my dream is acheivable or not ;) )
